Book excerpt: In Leptons: Classes, Properties and Interactions, the authors develop a model to calculate the masses of charged leptons by quantifying the electrostatic field generated by these particles. This model is extended to weak and strong interactions in order to calculate the masses of all elementary fermions.Next, by taking the SU(2) group of weak interactions in the presence of Electric Charge Swap-symmetry as a starting point, this compilation show that ordinary and non-regular leptons are related by the ECS-rotational SO(3) group. By considering the ECS-Hamiltonian quaternions for leptons, the authors find that the SU(5) Grand Unified Theory originates from the image of normalized quaternions group N(Q8) under the ECS-rotations.The differential cross-section corresponding to a dispersion process in the context of the 331RHν model is calculated in order to use the results in terrestrial and astrophysical experiments. The differential cross-section is written in terms of the mass of the new gauge boson Z′, the mixing angle, the magnetic moment of the neutrino, and the charge radius.In closing, the authors obtain analytical expressions for the total cross section of the process e+e− τ+τ−γ in the context of the B-L model. The total cross section is analyzed in terms of themass of the new gauge boson Z′, the mixing angle θ′ of the B-L model, the magneticmoment and the electric dipole moment of the τ -lepton.

Book excerpt: The ASI Quarks, Leptons and Beyond, held in Munich from the 5th to the 16th of September 1983 was dedicated to the study of what we now believe are the fundamental building blocks of nature: quarks and leptons. The subject was approached on two levels. On the one hand, a thorough discussion was given of the status of our knowledge of quarks and leptons and their interactions, both from an experi mental and a theoretical standpoint. On the other hand, open problems presented by the so called standard model of quark and lepton interact ions were explored along various ways that lead one beyond this frame work. One of the principal predictions of the standard model is that weak interactions are mediated by heavy Wand Z vector bosons. These particles were discovered in 1983 at CERN and their relevant proper ties were discussed at the ASI by C. Rubbia. Further theoretical predictions concerning these Z and W bosons, yet to be checked by future experimentation, were discussed by G. Altarelli with a view of seeing where the standard model might fail and new physics ensue. The strong interactions of quarks, based on Quantum Chromodynamics (QeD), are presumed to cause the quarks to bind into hadrons. Pro gress in attempts to calculate the observed hadronic spectrum, ab initio, starting from QCD and employing lattice methods were reviewed at the ASI by P. Hasenfratz.

BASDEVANT), CERN (M. JACOB), the Universite Catholi~ue de Louvain (D. SPEISER and J. WEYERS), and the Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven (R. GASTMANS), who, like in 1975 and 1977, had joined their efforts and worked in common. It was the 20th Summer Institute held at Cargese and the 5th one organized by the two institutes of theoretical physics at Leuven and Louvain-la Neuve. This time, the school was dominated by the impressive advances which were made in the field of perturbative ~uantum chromodyna mics and its applications to high energy phenomena involving strongly interacting particles. The unification of weak and electromagnetic interactions being well established, a new picture in particle physics emerges wherein a possible unification of weak, electromagnetic, and strong forces is put forward. Its conse~uences were also discussed in detail. Finally, to complete the picture of the present status of high energy physics, experi mentalists from the major laboratories around the world reported on the latest developments in electron-positron scattering, neutrino induced reactions, and hadron collisions.
