Book Properties of Ion Temperature Gradient Drift Instabilities in H mode Plasmas

Download or read book Properties of Ion Temperature Gradient Drift Instabilities in H mode Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results from tokamaks such as DIII-D and JET have indicated that the electron density profile in H-mode (''high- confinement'') discharges can be nearly flat over most of the plasma, and, in some cases, even inverted (outwardly peaked). These conditions have very interesting implications for pictures of anomalous thermal transport based on the presence of ion temperature gradient drift instabilities. The present paper includes a new derivation of the ion temperature gradient threshold for weak density gradient [eta]/sub i/ modes when ion transit resonances are taken into account; and the first derivation of threshold conditions for the onset of [eta]/sub i/-modes when [eta]/sub i/ is negative along with the properties of these negative [eta]/sub i/ instabilities when the thresholds are exceeded. Possible consequences for confinement in H-mode plasmas are discussed. 32 refs., 8 figs.

Book Turbulent Transport In Magnetized Plasmas Second Edition

Download or read book Turbulent Transport In Magnetized Plasmas Second Edition written by C Wendell Horton, Jr and published by #N/A. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a few seconds with large machines, scientists and engineers have now created the fusion power of the stars in the laboratory and at the same time find the rich range of complex turbulent electromagnetic waves that transport the plasma confinement systems. The turbulent transport mechanisms created in the laboratory are explained in detail in the second edition of 'Turbulent Transport in Magnetized Plasmas' by Professor Horton. The principles and properties of the major plasma confinement machines are explored with basic physics to the extent currently understood. For the observational laws that are not understood — the empirical confinement laws — offering challenges to the next generation of plasma students and researchers — are explained in detail. An example, is the confinement regime — called the 'I-mode' — currently a hot topic — is explored.Numerous important problems and puzzles for the next generation of plasma scientists are explained. There is growing demand for new simulation codes utilizing the massively parallel computers with MPI and GPU methods. When the 20 billion dollar ITER machine is tested in the 2020ies, new theories and faster/smarter computer simulations running in near real-time control systems will be used to control the burning hydrogen plasmas.

Book Fusion Physics

Download or read book Fusion Physics written by MITSURU KIKUCHI and published by International Atomic Energy. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 1158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans do not live by bread alone. Physically we are puny creatures with limited prowess, but with unlimited dreams. We see a mountain and want to move it to carve out a path for ourselves. We see a river and want to tame it so that it irrigates our fields. We see a star and want to fly to its planets to secure a future for our progeny. For all this, we need a genie who will do our bidding at a flip of our fingers. Energy is such a genie. Modern humans need energy and lots of it to live a life of comfort. In fact, the quality of life in different regions of the world can be directly correlated with the per capita use of energy [1.1–1.5]. In this regard, the human development index (HDI) of various countries based on various reports by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) [1.6] (Fig. 1.1), which is a parameter measuring the quality of life in a given part of the world, is directly determined by the amount of per capita electricity consumption. Most of the developing world (~5 billion people) is crawling up the UN curve of HDI versus per capita electricity consumption, from abysmally low values of today towards the average of the whole world and eventually towards the average of the developed world. This translates into a massive energy hunger for the globe as a whole. It has been estimated that by the year 2050, the global electricity demand will go up by a factor of up to 3 in a high growth scenario [1.7–1.9]. The requirements beyond 2050 go up even higher.

Book Plasma Instabilities and Nonlinear Effects

Download or read book Plasma Instabilities and Nonlinear Effects written by A. Hasegawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the significant progress in satellite-based observations of plasma states and associated electromagnetic phenomena in space has resulted in the accumulation of much evidence of various plasma instabilities. Today plasma instabilities are believed to be responsible for electromagnetic radiation as well as for many of the macroscopic dynamics of plasmas in space. Most students who begin to study plasma physics are intrigued by the unstable nature of plasmas compared with other states of matter; however, they often become frustrated because there are so many in stabilities. Such frustration explains in part why there is no textbook which treats this subject exclusively. A description of plasma instabilities in a systematic way is nontrivial and takes a pertinacious effort. This book is an attempt to provide a basic introduction on the subject and covers most of the important instabilities. However, the author must apologize for any omission of references to contributions of individuals who deserve more credit. The reader is assumed to have a general knowledge of plasma physics obtainable in an undergraduate course. The book is intended to be used as a reference text on the subject of plasma instabilities at the under graduate level as well as for a text in a special course in graduate school. Because the book is part of a series on physics and chemistry in space, emphasis is placed on plasma instabilities relevant in space plasmas.

Book Weak Turbulence Theory of Ion Temperature Gradient Modes for Inverted Density Plasmas

Download or read book Weak Turbulence Theory of Ion Temperature Gradient Modes for Inverted Density Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typical profiles measured in H-mode (high confinement'') discharges from tokamaks such as JET and DIII-D suggest that the ion temperature gradient instability threshold parameter [eta]{sub i} ({equivalent to}dlnT{sub i}/dlnn{sub i}) could be negative in many cases. Previous linear theoretical calculations have established the onset conditions for these negative [eta]{sub i}-modes and the fact that their growth rate is much smaller than their real frequency over a wide range of negative [eta]{sub i} values. This has motivated the present nonlinear weak turbulence analysis to assess the relevance of such instabilities for confinement in H-mode plasmas. The nonlinear eigenmode equation indicates that the 3-wave coupling to shorter wavelength modes is the dominant nonlinear saturation mechanism. It is found that both the saturation level for these fluctuations and the magnitude of the associated ion thermal diffusivity are considerably smaller than the strong turbulence mixing length type estimates for the more conventional positive-[eta]{sub i}-instabilities. 19 refs., 3 figs.
