Book excerpt: We review recent measurements of heavy B hadron states including masses and lifetimes of the B{sub c}− meson as well as excited B states (B**, B**{sub s}). We discuss properties of the B{sub s}° meson such as lifetime, lifetime difference [Delta][Lambda]{sub s}/[Lambda]{sub s} and CP violation in B{sub s}° → J/[psi][phi] decays. We also summarize new measurements of the masses and lifetimes of bottom baryons including the [Lambda]{sub b}° baryon, the [Sigma]{sub b} baryon states as well as the [Xi]{sub b}− and [Omega]{sub b}− baryons.

We also summarize new measurements of the mass of the [Sigma]{sub b} baryon. We expect more results from the Tevatron which will accumulate more data until the end of Run II currently scheduled to conclude in 2010.

Book excerpt: The study of charm and beauty mesons and baryons provides many opportunities to not only measure and classify their spectroscopic states, but also it serves as a testing ground for aspects of flavor QCD such as heavy quark effective theory and lattice gauge calculations, that are used in precise calculations of masses, lifetimes and cross sections. The Fermilab Tevatron has provided both fixed target and proton--antiproton collider facilities that not only account for the discovery of b-quarks but also have dovetailed well with the b-factories to answer a variety of b-physics questions, some of which were not readily explored at existing e e− and electron-positron colliders. An added feature of the hadron colliders is their large cross-section and high luminosity for production of b-quark states that compliments the high luminosities of the b-factories. We report on the observation of b-hadron states reconstructed using the D0 detector data at the Tevatron Collider. Measurements of the mass and relative rates of neutral excited B{sub d} and B{sub s} mesons, and the discovery of the [Xi]{sub b} baryon are described.

Book excerpt: This book highlights two essential analyses of data collected during the LHCb experiment, based on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The first comprises the first observation and studies of matter-antimatter asymmetries in two three-body b-baryon decays, paving the way for more precise measurements of the relatively unknown decay properties of b-baryon decays. The second is an analysis of a charged B meson decay to three charged pions, where previously large matter-antimatter asymmetries were observed in a model-independent analysis. Here a model of the decay amplitude is constructed using the unitarity-conserving ‘K-matrix’ model for the scalar contributions, so as to gain an understanding of how the previously observed matter-antimatter asymmetries arise; further, the model’s construction yields the most precise and comprehensive study of this decay mode to date.

Direct CP violation finally appeared in the form of ε′/ε in the K system. Indirect CP violation in B → J/Ψ Ks decay, the raison d'être for construction of e+e- B factories, was first sniffed out at the proton-antiproton collider. The asymmetric B factories — BABAR at SLAC and BELLE at KEK — were completed, while the symmetric B factory at Cornell was upgraded to CLEO-III. It seems that everyone is positioning himself for the great competition on “B Physics and CP Violation”, racing to unravel the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, especially the size and origin of CP phases. The change of millennium provides a dramatic backdrop.To have intensive discussions at the technical level, to create broader interest in the subject, and to maximize interaction between experimenters and theorists, this book starts with the status of B factories: accelerator, detector and physics analysis. Following an overview of B physics and the CKM matrix, it delves into the details of lifetime, spectroscopy and decays, with even more specialized discussions on rare decays, direct and indirect CP violation, factorization and final state interactions, determination of unitarity phases, etc. Topics on ε′/ε, rare K decay, charm and hyperon systems, and various T, CP and CPT tests are also discussed at length. Book excerpt: Novel forms of matter, such as states made of gluons (glueballs), multiquark mesons or baryons and hybrid mesons are predicted by low energy QCD, for which several candidates have recently been identified. Searching for such exotic states of matter and studying their production and decay properties in detail has become a flourishing field at the experimental facilities now available or being built - e.g. BESIII in Beijing, BELLE II at SuperKEKB, GlueX at Jefferson Lab, PANDA at FAIR, J-PARC and in the upgraded LHC experiments, in particular LHCb. A modern primer in the field is required so as to both revive and update the teaching of a new generation of researchers in the field of QCD. These lectures on hadron spectroscopy are intended for Master and PhD students and have been originally developed for a course delivered at the Stefan Meyer Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. They are phenomenologically oriented and intended as complementary material for basic courses in particle and nuclear physics. The book describes the spectra of light and heavy mesons and baryons, and introduces the fundamental properties based on symmetries. Further, it derives multiplet structures, mixing angle, decay coupling constants, magnetic moments of baryons, and predictions for multiquark states and compares these with suitable experimental data. Basic methods of calculating decay angular distributions and determining masses and widths of resonances are also presented. The appendices provide students and newcomers to the field with the necessary background information, and include a set of problems and solutions.
