Book Preparation and Propagation of Vines

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vintage book looks at the various methods that can be used for preparing and propagating grape vines for wine production, written by F. T. Bioletti. It includes detailed descriptions of the various techniques with information on their benefits, common problems, and much more. Contents include: "Selection and Preparation of the Vine-cuttings", "Method of Selection", "The Locality", "Vine Diseases", "The Vineyard", "The Vines", "Part of the Vine", "Form and Length of Cutting", "Conservation of Cuttings", "Definition of Good Vine Cuttings", etc. Frederic Theodore Bioletti (1865 - 1939) was an English-born American vintner. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley from 1889 to 1900, where he worked with prominent soil scientist Professor E.W. Hilgard. His work with Hilgard on the fermentation of wines under different conditions were significant in helping California vintners to refine their wine production practices and improving the resulting wines. Bioletti was the first chair of the Department of Viticulture and Enology and founded the grape breeding program at the University of California Agricultural Experiment Station. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Book The Grape Vine Its Propagation and Culture

Download or read book The Grape Vine Its Propagation and Culture written by John Simpson and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI. TEMPERATURE. The earliest varieties of the Vine require about five months to ripen their fruit from the time of starting the Vines; but kinds like the Black Hamburgh are better allowed six months. Late varieties, like the Muscat of Alexandria, Gros Guillaume, and others mentioned in the list of late Grapes at the end, require nearly eight months, but the Alicante and Lady Downes can be ripened perfectly between the beginning of April and the end of October. Grape-growers have, therefore, only to calculate when they will need any given crops to be ripe, and start their Vineries accordingly. Before starting the Vines they should be washed and cleaned, and so should any portion of the Vinery inside; the border should also receive a good watering. As regards temperature a few noteworthy fruit-growers allow considerable latitude, preferring rather to be guided by circumstances and weather conditions, than by hard-and-fast F rules. With the Vine, however, in the earlier stages of forcing, unnaturally, not to say injuriously, high night temperatures have been the rule hitherto; but a great change has taken place of late years in favour of lower temperatures, as being both better for the Vines and more economical. If we compare the night temperatures generally recommended for the Vine, from the starting period till the setting of the fruit, it will be found that they far exceed the average night temperature during the same period of growth in those countries most favourable to the Vine; and what makes the matter worse, these excessively high temperatures are given under circumstances which only increase their power of mischief; as, for instance, when the Vine is forced in a Vinery under our cloudy skies, and during the long dark...

Book The Science of Grapevines

Download or read book The Science of Grapevines written by Markus Keller and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of Grapevines: Anatomy and Physiology is an introduction to the physical structure of the grapevine, its various organs, their functions and their interactions with the environment. Beginning with a brief overview of the botanical classification (including an introduction to the concepts of species, cultivars, clones, and rootstocks), plant morphology and anatomy, and growth cycles of grapevines, The Science of Grapevines covers the basic concepts in growth and development, water relations, photosynthesis and respiration, mineral uptake and utilization, and carbon partitioning. These concepts are put to use to understand plant-environment interactions including canopy dynamics, yield formation, and fruit composition, and concludes with an introduction to stress physiology, including water stress (drought and flooding), nutrient deficiency and excess, extreme temperatures (heat and cold), and the impact and response to of other organisms. Based on the author’s years of teaching grapevine anatomy as well as his research experience with grapevines and practical experience growing grapes, this book provides an important guide to understanding the entire plant. Chapter 7 broken into two chapters, now "Environmental Constraints and Stress Physiology and Chapter 8 "Living with Other Organisms" to better reflect specific concepts Integration of new research results including: Latest research on implementing drip irrigation to maximize sugar accumulation within grapes Effect of drought stress on grapevine’s hydraulic system and options for optimum plant maintenance in drought conditions The recently discovered plant hormone – strigolactones – and their contribution of apical dominance that has suddenly outdated dogma on apical dominance control Chapter summaries added Key literature references missed in the first edition as well as references to research completed since the 1e publication will be added
