Book Grapevine Root Wor Classic Reprint

Download or read book Grapevine Root Wor Classic Reprint written by Ephraim Porter Felt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grapevine Root Wor The season of 1902 was unusually favorable to vine growth, and the same is true. Of the past summer, a condition for which the grower should be thankful, since it has enabled the vines to withstand insect attacks more successfully. Area infested. Ripley appears to be the original center of this insect's most destructive work, though it has been found generally present in small numbers in many vineyards where little evidence of serious injury occurs. The pest very probably made its way into the Chautauqua grape belt from Ohio; and our investigations in 1903 show that it is present in greater or less numbers from the state line as far east as Sheridan, if not farther and from the lake shore to the top of the adjacent hills. We have also found it in small numbers in Hudson river valley vineyards at Highland and Milton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Manual of American Grape Growing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of American Grape Growing Classic Reprint written by U. P. Hedrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of American Grape-Growing Seventy-nine books on grapes enrich the pomology of North America, not counting numerous state and national publications. Pomological writers in America have been partial to the grape, for other fruits do not fare nearly so well. Twenty - two books are devoted to the strawberry, fourteen to the apple, to the peach nine, cranberry eight, plum five, pear nine, quince two, logan'berry one, while the cherry, raspberry, and blackberry are not once separated from other fruits in special books. Thus, though a comparative newcomer among the fruits of the country, the grape has been singled out for a treatise more times than all other fruits of temperate climates combined seventy-nine books on the grape, seventy on all other fruits. This statement of partiality does not lead to an apology for a new book on the grape. There is urgent need for a new book. But three of the seventy-nine treatises on this fruit are con temporary, and all but one, a handbook on training, are records from vanished minds. Methods change so rapidly and varieties multiply so fast, that to keep pace there must be new books on fruits every few years. Besides, the types of grapes are so diverse, and different soils, climates, and treatments produce such widely dissimilar results, that many books are required to do justice to this fruit the vineyard should be seen through many eyes. Book Pierce s Disease of Grapevines Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pierce s Disease of Grapevines Classic Reprint written by William Boright Hewitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pierce's Disease of Grapevines In addition to the studies reported by these two men, there were others' who made observations and some who conducted experimental work on the nature of this disease. Both Pierce and Dowlen came to similar conclusions: that the disease which caused the death of the vines in southern California was due to some very obscure disease-producing agent that in their opinion was not either bacterial or fungus but was, nevertheless, contagious and spread through the vineyards. They fur ther concluded from their studies that the disease was not associated with any soil types or cultural and irrigation practices. Losses in vineyards of southern California began to decline about 1895, and by this time young plantings near the margins of the diseased areas were developing with the loss of only a few vines each season. After 1900 the disease became obscure or passed unnoticed and very little is known of its occurrence until the recent outbreak of Pierce's disease in the San Joaquin Valley, except that vines of vinifera grape varieties have been notoriously very short-lived in many of the southern California districts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pruning Vinifera Grapevines BY separating the influence of pruning from the influence of crop on the growth and fruiting of the vine, new principles of the response of the vine to pruning have been discovered. It has been clearly shown that pruning depresses3 the capacity of the vine for both growth and produc tion. By employing longer (less severe) types of pruning, that is, by retaining more wood at the winter pruning and accompanying th1s with some method of thinning to regulate the crop, a. Method of procedure has been developed which has resulted in the improvement of both qual ity and yield. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book American Vines Resistant Stock

Download or read book American Vines Resistant Stock written by P. Viala and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Vines (Resistant Stock): Their Adaptation, Culture, Grafting and Propagation The translation of the book which Messrs. Raymond Dubois and Edmund H. Twight are now presenting to California viticulturists is a summary of the efforts accomplished by the viticulturists of France in the struggle against phylloxera, and of the new knowledge they have definitely gained for the reconstitution of vineyards. This knowledge has been revised to date for the present translation, and all new facts which actually permit to direct the reconstitution of vineyards are brought together in this California translation. The viticulturists of California are practically working under the same conditions as the viticulturists of the South of France, therefore the facts acquired in that region should be applied in their vineyards. These facts are simple, and consist, above all, in having recourse to the American vines most resistant to phylloxera, that is to say, in using pure species (V. Riparia, V. Rupestris, V. Berlandieri), or hybrids of these species (V. Riparia X V. Rupestris, V. Rupestris X V. Berlandieri, and V. Riparia X V. Berlandieri). The essential condition is to select different graft-bearers, according to the diverse classes of soils, and we trust that this book will assist California viticulturists in that direction. The course to be followed in the struggle against phylloxera is nowadays definitely established. The immense efforts accomplished by our French viticulturists have vanquished an unprecedented crisis; their work, crowned with success, should benefit the viticulturists of the whole world. The most definite and general conclusion derived from this struggle is the superiority of reconstitution with American vines resisting the attacks of the insects.
