Book Protocols for Micropropagation of Woody Trees and Fruits

Download or read book Protocols for Micropropagation of Woody Trees and Fruits written by S.Mohan Jain and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-18 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micropropagation has become a reliable and routine approach for large-scale rapid plant multiplication, which is based on plant cell, tissue and organ culture on well defined tissue culture media under aseptic conditions. A lot of research efforts are being made to develop and refine micropropagation methods and culture media for large-scale plant multiplication of several number of plant species. However, many forest and fruit tree species still remain recalcitrant to in vitro culture and require highly specific culture conditions for plant growth and development. The recent challenges on plant cell cycle regulation and the presented potential molecular mechanisms of recalcitrance are providing excellent background for understanding on totipotency and what is more development of micropropagation protocols. For large-scale in vitro plant production the important attributes are the quality, cost effectiveness, maintenance of genetic fidelity, and long-term storage. The need for appropriate in vitro plant regeneration methods for woody plants, including both forest and fruit trees, is still overwhelming in order to overcome problems facing micropropagation such as somaclonal variation, recalcitrant rooting, hyperhydricity, polyphenols, loss of material during hardening and quality of plant material. Moreover, micropropagation may be utilized, in basic research, in production of virus-free planting material, cryopreservation of endangered and elite woody species, applications in tree breeding and reforestation.

Book Propagation of Trees and Shrubs

Download or read book Propagation of Trees and Shrubs written by Guy E. Yerkes and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes briefly some of the methods frequently employed for the propagation of deciduous fruit trees as well as a number of the trees and shrubs used for the adornment of home grounds. Practical details concerning the care and handling of tree seeds, the culture of seedlings, the successive steps in the handling of cuttings, layers, grafts, and buds in order to succeed in these operations, as well as the methods of propagation most suitable for the several kinds of woody plants, are presented.

Download or read book Grafting and Budding in Fruit Trees written by Sherif Fathy Eid El-Sayed EL Gioushy and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people mistakenly believe that fruit trees grow true to name from seeds . In reality, if you collect seed from a fruit grown on a plant, the seeds will produce plants that will be a hybrid of two plants . The new plant will be the same kind of plant, but its fruit and vegetative portions may not look the same as the parent because the plant is "heterozygous ." Therefore, all fruit trees must be vegetatively propagated by either grafting or budding methods . Fruit growers frequently use grafting techniques to topwork new varieties or strains of fruit onto established trees bearing misnamed or obsolete varieties and to repair injury or damage caused by mice, rabbits, deer, or mechanical means . Commercial nursery workers propagate new fruit trees, and producing a tree ready for planting takes several years . All of the temperate-zone deciduous fruit plants may be propagated by budding . Cleft, whip, and bridge grafting of apple and pear is possible, but such grafts are not often successful on stone fruits . Sweet cherry and, occasionally, peach may be successfully grafted using the side graft onto a 2- to 3-year-old limb .
