Book excerpt: The method of characteristics is applied to the set of equations which governs the propagation of axially symmetric torsional shear waves in nonhomogeneous elastic media. The wave velocities, characteristic equations, and the equations governing the propagation of abrupt changes (discontinuous wave fronts) are derived in closed form. Numerical integration along the characteristic directions was carried out for several examples on an electronic computer. The solutions of three specific examples calculated show general agreement with existing solutions by other methods. For certain problems, the method of characteristics yield additional results which cannot be obtained by the Laplace transform method. (Author).

This book exposes wave propagation problems for a range of material responses and justifies the hypotheses introduced in specialized theories and the simplifications made in the analysis of particular problems. Both analytical and numerical methods of solving problems are described, and a large number of solutions to specific problems of wave propagation in inelastic solids are given. This book is comprised of six chapters and begins with an overview of the fundamental equations of the dynamics of inelastic media. The dynamical properties of metals and soils are discussed, offering an account of the most representative theories of plasticity and viscoplasticity. The next chapter considers the basic definitions of discontinuity surfaces and the conditions that must to be satisfied across these surfaces. Certain mathematical fundamentals are given, referring to systems of differential equations, quasi-linear and semi-linear, of the first order. Initial and boundary value problems for hyperbolic equations are also formulated. The remaining chapters focus on methods of solving stress wave propagation problems, including one-dimensional plane waves and longitudinal-transverse waves. Wave propagation problems for elastic-plastic and elastic/viscoplastic media are treated in detail, along with the most important problem of shock waves in metals and soils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the effect of inhomogeneous pre-stress on elastic wave propagation and scattering in nonlinear elastic materials is investigated. Four main problems are considered: 1. torsional wave propagation in a pre-stressed annular cylinder, 2. the scattering of horizontally polarised shear waves from a cylindrical cavity in a pre-stressed, infinite, nonlinear elastic material, 3. the use of pre-stress to cloak cylindrical cavities from incoming horizontally polarised shear waves, and 4. the scattering of shear waves from a spherical cavity in a pre-stressed, infinite, nonlinear elastic material. It is observed that waves in a hyperelastic material are significantly affected by pre-stress, and different results are obtained from those which would be obtained if the underlying stress was neglected and only geometrical changes were considered. In Chapter 3 we show that the dispersion curves for torsional waves propagating in an annular cylinder are strongly dependent on the pre-stress applied. A greater pressure on the inner surface than the outer causes the roots of the dispersion curves to be spaced further apart, whereas a greater pressure on the outer surface than the inner causes them to be spaced closer together. We also show that a longitudinal stretch causes the cut-on frequencies to move closer together and decreases the gradient of the dispersion curves, whilst a longitudinal compression causes the cut-on frequencies to move further apart and increases the gradient of the dispersion curves. In Chapter 4 we observe that pre-stress affects the scattering coefficients for shear waves scattered from a cylindrical cavity. It is shown that, for certain parameter values, the scattering coefficients obtained in a pre-stressed medium are closer to those that would be obtained in the undeformed configuration than those that would be obtained in the deformed configuration if the pre-stress were neglected. This result is utilised in Chapter 5 where the cloaking of a cylindrical cavity from horizontally polarised shear waves is examined. It is shown that neo-Hookean materials are optimal for this type of cloaking. A stonger dependence of the strain energy function on the second strain invariant leads to a less efficient cloak. We observe that, for a Mooney-Rivlin material, as S1 tends from 1 towards 0 (in other words, as a material becomes less dependent on the first strain invariant, and more dependent on the second strain invariant), there is more scattering from the cloaking region. For materials which are strongly dependent on the second strain invariant the pre-stress actually increases the scattering cross-section relative to the scattering cross-section for an unstressed material, hence these materials are unsuitable for pre-stress cloaking. Finally, in Chapter 6 we study the effect of pressure applied to the inner surface of a spherical cavity and at infinity on the propagation and scattering of shear waves in an unbounded medium. It is shown that the scattering coefficients and cross-sections for this problem are strongly dependent on the pre-stress considered. We observe that a region of inhomogeneous pre-stress can lead to some counterintuitive relationships between cavity size and scattering cross-sections and coefficients.

Book excerpt: This report is a study of the relationships existing between the frequency, phase velocity, group velocity, and wave number of mechanical waves propagating in bounded, heterogeneous, linearly elastic media. For single wave systems, which include the Love and pressure waves and are governed by a single second-order ordinary differential equation, Sturmian theory is applicable. Due to the inapplicability of Sturmian theory to two or three coupled, second-order ordinary differential equations, general results of double wave systems, comprised of the pressure and shear-vertical waves and described by these two or three equations, are unobtainable. The analysis is directed towards either very short or very long wavelength waves and proceeds by perturbation or asymptotic methods. For both wave systems, the emphasis is on determining the way in which the phase velocity varies with the wave number. From this relationship, the frequency and group velocity can be found as functions of the wave number.

Book excerpt: In this monograph I record those parts of the theory of transverse isotropic elastic wave propagation which lend themselves to an exact treatment, within the framework of linear theory. Emphasis is placed on transient wave motion problems in two- and three-dimensional unbounded and semibounded solids for which explicit results can be obtained, without resort to approximate methods of integration. The mathematical techniques used, many of which appear here in book form for the first time, will be of interest to applied mathematicians, engeneers and scientists whose specialty includes crystal acoustics, crystal optics, magnetogasdynamics, dislocation theory, seismology and fibre wound composites. My interest in the subject of anisotropic wave motion had its origin in the study of small deformations superposed on large deformations of elastic solids. By varying the initial stretch in a homogeneously deformed solid, it is possible to synthesize aniso tropic materials whose elastic parameters vary continuously. The range of the parameter variation is limited by stability considerations in the case of small deformations super posed on large deformation problems and (what is essentially the same thing) by the of hyperbolicity (solids whose parameters allow wave motion) for anisotropic notion solids. The full implication of hyperbolicity for anisotropic elastic solids has never been previously examined, and even now the constraints which it imposes on the elasticity constants have only been examined for the class of transversely isotropic (hexagonal crystals) materials.
