Book excerpt: Excerpt from Propagation and Distribution of Food Fishes, Fiscal Year 1926 The bureau continues to make annual collections of bass and other warm-water fishes from overflowed lands bordering the Mississippi River. These are distributed principally in waters in the States of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois, only a very small number being sent to more remote points. During the year the station at La Crosse, Wis, made preparations for taking up the production of fish in the territory included in the upper Mississippi wild life and fish refuge. Boats and other movable equipment required for the work were obtained, but as the Government had not purchased any land under the provisions of the act creating this refuge no expenditures could be made for improvements to natural ponds. As soon as the property has been acquired the bureau will take steps to utilize the most suitable natural reservoirs for the breeding of fish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Propagation and Distribution of Food Fishes: Fiscal Year 1930 It is gratifying to report an all-time high record for the distribu tion of fish and eggs from the hatcheries Operated by the division of fish culture during the fiscal year 1930. The division submits this report with the full knowledge that a detailed analysis Of the various items comprising this huge total is necessary to present properly a picture of the real significance of the operations. The popular conception of the bureau's fish-cultural work, based only upon a limited knowledge of the game-fish hatcheries in the interior and the distribution of these species on private applications, must be overcome. It is essential to make the fact known that the bureau's fish-cultural activities are not alone designated for the bene fit of the angler and the casual fisherman but also for the purpose of furthering an important industry and for augmenting the food supply of the Nation. This policy has been based upon the knowledge that the overflow from such pri vate waters will go to stock public streams and the private waters frequently serve as more or less well protected nursery areas. Further more, the land owner and his friends, having satisfactory fishing in their own waters, are not frequenting the heavily fished public streams. This excess was 'made possible by the unusual degree of success attained in the work with the commercial fishes the collections of the marine species alone exceeding those in 1923. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Propagation and Distribution of Food Fishes: Fiscal Year 1939 In working out the details of these various joint undertakings, frequent contact has been maintained with Federal departments, bureaus and agencies, with more than 30 State conservation depart ments, with several municipalities and county governments, and with innumerable sportsmen's and conservation organizations Of a semi public nature. The mechanism for coordination has consisted of broad general agreements, such as have been set up with the United States Forest Service, the National Park Service, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and several Of the States. There have also been specific written agreements covering individual problems or projects as well as informal understandings reached by conference between field employ ees or headquarters Officials. In the latter case the meetings Of the National Planning Council Of Fish and Game Commissioners have afforded an opportunity for channeling Federal and State fish-cultural activities toward maximum efficiency and utility. As an indication of the manner in which conservation activities have - been prosecuted on a joint basis, there are cited below various instances and examples. These do not present the full scope of such undertakings but space limitations necessitate many omissions. The relationships maintained with the counties Of Monroe and Onondaga, N. Y., for the purpose Of propagating and distributing fish in local waters, have served as a model for a similar undertaking with the city Of Danville, Va. Initial steps have been taken whereby the Bureau will supply fish for the maintenance of angling in lakes and streams developed by the city for hydroelectric purposes. The city will, according to plans, meet the costs Of developing necessary facilities and caring for the fish. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Propagation and Distribution of Food Fishes, 1921: Report of the Division of Fish Culture, for the Fiscal Year 1921 The situation is a grave one, and if not given proper and imme diate attention by the States concerned and by the Federal Govern ment there is imminent danger of the total depletion of fish life in many valuable waters which have heretofore yielded an abundant supply. The advantages of keeping the interior waters of the coun try well stocked with the game and food fishes adapted to them are many and obvious. By such means a cheap and very desirable food supply is afforded to a certain class of people who would otherwise be unable to enjoy it. Vast numbers of people are inspired by the lure of good fishing to seek the great out-of - doors, with very bene ficial results to their health, aside from the recreation afforded. Certain of the State authorities who are not able to cope with the difficulty have applied to the Bureau of Fisheries for aid, but in most instances it could not be given, the bureau's resources having been already greatly overtaxed in the effort to maintain the scope of its work along previously established lines. The bureau's efforts in fish culture are directed chiefly toward the maintenance of the existing fisheries of the country and toward the development of new and profitable sources of fish supply by extend ing its operations over a wider territory in fields contiguous to the present stations. Five important functions are involved in this work, namely, the collections of eggs from various species of: fish of economic value, the incubation of, the eggs in properly equipped hatcheries, the rearing and feeding of the young of certain species, the rescue of stranded fishes from overflow waters in the Mississippi Valley, and the distribution of fish and fish eggs in suitable waters.
