Book English Phonological Errors Produced by English Department Students

Download or read book English Phonological Errors Produced by English Department Students written by Arlene Maria Yostanto and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People in general assume that in learning a foreign language, fluency is more important than accuracy. This view often urges language learners to think that perfecting sentence structure and comprehending vocabulary are more important than learning how native speakers articulate words, and leads them to generate errors in the articulation of the language's speech sounds. However, precision in pronouncing words is especially essential for language learners, and English, in terms of pronounciation, is the most difficult language to master. This book, therefore, studies English phonological errors produced by English language learners. To be specific, it analyzes the phonological errors made by English Department students of Petra Christian University with the six English consonantal sound that do not exist in Indonesian phonetics system; [v], [ ], [o], [ ], [d ], and [t ], as the main focus. The analysis should be useful for further research in the area of articulatory phonetics, and should be essentially helpful for English language learners and teachers, especially those whose mother tongue are not English, to understand the basic mistakes in pronunciation.

Book Errors in English Pronunciation among Arabic Speakers

Download or read book Errors in English Pronunciation among Arabic Speakers written by Mohamed Fathy Khalifa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contrastive analysis of Arabs’ errors in English pronunciation regarding segmentals—consonants, consonant clusters, and vowels—and suprasegmentals—main word stress. It also explains the main interlingual reasons behind these errors, and presents some teaching suggestions for surmounting them. The findings show that the subjects substitute their own Arabic sounds for unfamiliar English ones, producing incorrect English sounds. In addition, they apply Arabic main word stress rules instead of English ones, producing incorrect English stress patterns. The book also shows that English sounds and stress patterns that are both different and more marked than corresponding Arabic ones caused learning difficulties for the subjects.

Book Identifying and Analyzing Errors of Segmental Phonemes

Download or read book Identifying and Analyzing Errors of Segmental Phonemes written by Majdi Tahat and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigates the errors of pronunciation made by students from two primary schools in Assarih, Jordan. It attempts to find out which English sound is more difficult to produce [consonant or vowel], to determine which is more difficult for students to produce-sounds in the initial, medial or in the final position and to look into any sex-related differences in pronunciation between girls and boys. Findings were achieved through three main tests carried out in the middle of January in the academic year (2008/2009). The number of students who participated in each test was 20 in which half of them were boys. They were selected randomly from the sixth grade (12 years old). The first test (Test A) concentrated on vowel and diphthong pronunciation which required students to pronounce a list of 21 words containing vowel between two consonants. For analysing purposes, all the tests were recorded. Sixty percent of the students pronounced the vowels correctly, while 50% pronounced diphthong correctly. The second test (Test B) intended to find out which is the more difficult consonant sounds to be produced by the students in three positions (i.e., initial, medial and final).
