Book Promotion of Farm Forestry in Punjab Pakistan

Download or read book Promotion of Farm Forestry in Punjab Pakistan written by Syed Muhammad Saqlain Raza Shah and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very low forest area in Pakistan demands brisk running of strategies to increase tree cover. One of the feasible solutions recognized is the promotion of farm forestry. Tehsil Lodhran in Punjab Pakistan is deficient in tree resources. A study was conducted to understand perceptions of small scale farmers for promotion of farm forestry. Empirical findings from survey revealed that status of farm forestry was poor in the study area; yet, farmers were more interested in tree planting, have good tree knowledge and liked all locally available tree species. Farmers were not satisfied with the role of Forest Department. Mass media and other audio visual aids were regarded as most liked and effective source of farm forestry information by the farmers as well as Forest Department. Forest Department perceived that farmers paid less attention to tree growing. They believed that the department adopted all measures for the promotion of farm forestry. The study concluded with the wider role of both farmers and Forest Department in the promotion of farm forestry and resolving ambiguities in terms of each other recognition and needs cooperation in increasing tree cover on farmlands.

Book Forestry sector review Pakistan 2019

Download or read book Forestry sector review Pakistan 2019 written by The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realizing the importance of the forestry sector’s contribution to climate change mitigation and consequently to the improvement of local livelihoods, the World Bank and FAO-Pakistan launched the Forestry Sector Review in 2017. The objective of the Review is to provide a better understanding of current and potential environmental, social, and economic impacts of the forestry ecosystem in the country. Pakistan is a federation of four provinces; Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab and Sindh. The country has three special areas i.e. Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA)1, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT). Pakistan is a forest poor country with a small area of 4.478 million ha (5.1 percent) under forests. This amounts to 0.021 ha per person, compared to the world average of 1 ha/person. The contribution of the forestry sector to the GNP and GDP as per official estimates seems quite insignificant, primarily due to the fact that a multitude of non-timber forest products (NTFP) and non-tangible environmental and ecological benefits of the forests are not taken into account. This review provides estimates of the total extent of forestry resources and identifies opportunities and hotspots while providing key recommendations for realizing a future sustainable forest system in Pakistan. Appropriate mechanisms and a well-defined strategy are required to address the numerous issues involved in sustainable forest management. The Review also highlights the involvement and contributions of local communities as an essential element for natural resource management and biodiversity conservation.

Book Agroforestry Parklands in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Agroforestry Parklands in Sub Saharan Africa written by Jean-Marc Boffa and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document attempts to present the current state of knowledge on agroforestry parkland systems. These systems, which for many local populations are very important for food security, income generation and environmental protection, are found primarily in the semi-arid and sub-humid zones of West Africa. The document first provides a thorough description of their distribution and diversity and discusses different ways of classifying them. It also presents data on current trends in parkland development and assesses determining factors. The document then provides an in-depth analysis of biophysical tree-soil-crop interactions and the factors regulating them, and describes various improved parkland management techniques. It goes on to examine the strength and limitations of institutional arrangements as well as the constraints imposed by Sahelian forest policies on the sustainable management of parklands. The production, use and marketing of parkland products is reviewed with an emphasis on their contribution to food security, local and national income as well as social values. Overall costs and benefits of the practice of parkland agroforestry are evaluated. In conclusion, the document identifies crucial research needs and promising avenues for promoting sustainable management of parkland systems.

Book Developing Sustainable Agriculture in Pakistan

Download or read book Developing Sustainable Agriculture in Pakistan written by Iqrar Ahmad Khan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 1119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture plays a pivotal role in the economy and development of Pakistan providing food to consumers, raw materials to industries, and a market for industrial goods. Unfortunately, agricultural production is stagnant due to several barriers including a fixed cropping pattern, reliance on a few major crops, a narrow genetic pool, poor seed quality, and a changing climate. In addition, the high cost of production, weak phytosanitary compliance mechanisms, and a lack of cold chain facilities makes Pakistan agriculturally uncompetitive in export markets. Despite all these issues, agriculture is the primary industry in Pakistan and small farmers continue to dominate the business. Small farmers grow crops for subsistence under a fixed cropping pattern and a holistic approach is required to develop agriculture to improve the livelihoods of the rural populace. This book presents an exhaustive look at agriculture in Pakistan. Chapters provide critical analyses of present trends, inadequacies in agriculture, strategic planning, improvement programs and policies while keeping in view the natural resources, plant- and animal-related agricultural production technologies, input supplies, population planning, migration and poverty, and balanced policies on finance, credit, marketing, and trade.
