Book Promotion of Bilingualism in the School Environment A Comparison between Germany and the US

Download or read book Promotion of Bilingualism in the School Environment A Comparison between Germany and the US written by Julia Klaas and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, The University of Arizona, language: English, abstract: In this paper, I will be focusing on the treatment of bilingualism in schools both as a ‘problem’ and a ‘benefit’, thereby analyzing the notions of “immigrant bilingualism” and “elite bilingualism”. It is interesting to me how bilinguals are perceived in German and American societies in general, something that I have already alluded to in this introduction, and how they are perceived in the school environment. I will also be looking at programs and schools that promote bilingualism in both countries and different languages, as well as the reception of bilingual students in ‘normal’ schools. Finally, I will explore some of the research done on the success of (mainly immigrant) bilinguals in the school environment: whether and in which situations or subjects their bilingualism helps or hinders students during their educational career. "No one can say for sure how many people are multilingual, but a reasonable estimate is that at least half of the world’s population is in this category. Multilingualism is thus by no means a rare phenomenon, but a normal and common occurrence in most parts of the world." This statement by Saville-Troike might some surprising to some, given that in many Western societies, the ability to use two (or more) languages is seen as something ‘special’ – however, I intentionally do not give away whether this characterization of ‘special’ is seen as something positive or negative. The fact is that in many of those same societies, whether being ‘special’ is good or bad depends on the languages that are spoken by that bi- or multilingual person.

Book German English Bilingual Schools in America

Download or read book German English Bilingual Schools in America written by Carolyn R. Toth and published by Peter Lang Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 1990 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators, researchers, and parents interested in past and present foreign language learning opportunities will applaud this far-reaching account of German-English bilingual schools from the 1690s to the 1990s. The study focuses on Cincinnati, birthplace of the first public German bilingual school system in 1840, and the city to launch German bilingual education for monolingual English-speaking pupils in 1974. The Cincinnati model is a proven equalizer in education, with pupils from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds scoring in the top percentiles on standardized achievement tests. This book provides not only a wealth of information for scholars, but a source of ammunition for all advocates of foreign language learning.

Book Teaching Content and Language in the Multilingual Classroom

Download or read book Teaching Content and Language in the Multilingual Classroom written by Svenja Hammer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together research from six different countries across three continents where teacher educators and policy makers are addressing the under-preparation of content teachers to work effectively with multilingual learners. By highlighting this relatively young field of research at an international level, the book advances the research-based knowledge of the field and promotes international research relationships and partnerships to better support the education of multilingual learners and their teachers. The chapters represent high-quality empirical qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies about pre-service and in-service teachers. Comprising four sections, each represents a critical aspect of the equitable teaching of multilingual learners. All the research was conducted in countries that belong to OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) and the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) enabling the reader to compare contexts and outcomes. This book will be of particular interest to academics, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of language education, teacher education, and education for multilingual learners. It will be of great value to anyone concerned with equity and social justice for multilingual learners whose languages, cultural practices, and resources are often overlooked and/or marginalized in the schools they attend.

Book Promoting multilingual practices in school and home environments

Download or read book Promoting multilingual practices in school and home environments written by Anna Szczepaniak-Kozak and published by V&R unipress. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European society in the 21st century is characterised by increasing linguistic and cultural diversity and this offers valuable resources both on the economic and ideational level. At the same time, this growing diversity raises challenges to societies in terms of ensuring greater equity and social cohesion. In this book, the authors discuss the role of languages and multilingualism in the education system and at the interface of formal education and the home environment in this time of transition. They offer perspectives of four European countries, namely Germany, Greece, Ireland and Poland. By this, the authors aim to provide teacher educators, interested teachers and also other stakeholders in the education system with essential contextual information and related pedagogical considerations in the areas of language acquisition, multilingualism, multilingual upbringing, whole-school development and language-sensitive teaching.

Book Traditions and Transitions

Download or read book Traditions and Transitions written by John L. Plews and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditions and Transitions: Curricula for German Studies is a collection of essays by Canadian and international scholars on the topic of why and how the curriculum for post-secondary German studies should evolve. Its twenty chapters, written by international experts in the field of German as a foreign or second language, explore new perspectives on and orientations in the curriculum. In light of shifts in the linguistic and intercultural needs of today’s global citizens, these scholars in German studies question the foundations and motivations of common curriculum goals, traditional program content, standard syllabus design, and long-standing classroom practice. Several chapters draw on a range of contemporary theories—from critical applied linguistics, second-language acquisition, curriculum theory, and cultural studies—to propose and encourage new curriculum thinking and reflective practice related to the translingual and cross-cultural subjectivities of speakers, learners, and teachers of German. Other chapters describe and analyze specific examples of emerging trends in curriculum practice for learners as users of German. This volume will be invaluable to university and college faculty working in the discipline of German studies as well as in other modern languages and second-language education in general. Its combination of theoretical and descriptive explorations will help readers develop a critical awareness and understanding of curriculum for teaching German and to implement new approaches in the interests of their students.

Book Foreign Language Education in Multilingual Classrooms

Download or read book Foreign Language Education in Multilingual Classrooms written by Andreas Bonnet and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume challenges traditional approaches to foreign language education and proposes to redefine them in our age of international migration and globalization. Foreign language classrooms are no longer populated by monolingual students, but increasingly by multilingual students with highly diverse language backgrounds. This necessitates a new understanding of foreign language learning and teaching. The volume brings together an international group of researchers of high caliber who specialize in third language acquisition, teaching English as an additional language, and multilingual education. In addition to topical overview articles on the multilingual policies pursued in Europe, Africa, North America, and Asia, as well as several contributions dealing with theoretical issues regarding multilingualism and plurilingualism, the volume also offers cutting edge case studies from multilingual acquisition research and foreign language classroom practice. Throughout the volume, multilingualism is interpreted as a valuable resource that can facilitate language education provided it is harnessed in appropriate conditions.
