Book excerpt: Recent sexual education and health promotions have emphasized the importance of parent-child sexual communication in healthy sexual development of youth. By using effective parent-adolescent sexual communication, parents can provide their adolescent children with more accurate knowledge about sexuality and help them shape healthy sexual attitudes that might lead to wise decision-making during adolescence. In addition, effective parent-adolescent sexual communication serves as an influential factor in buffering adolescents' risky sexual behaviors. However, ineffective parent-adolescent sexual communication is likely prevalent among families as parents might face many barriers in initiating and discussing sexuality-related topics. Limited or no sexual communication may significantly undermine parents' potential to be optimal influencers of their adolescent's healthy sexual development. The increasing usage of smartphones and mobile apps among the U.S. adults gives unprecedented opportunities to deliver parent-based adolescent sexual health interventions to a wider and more diverse population. Guided by research, as well as Urie Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory of human development, this report provides a research-based foundation on which to build a smartphone app, Parent Sex Talk 12-14, providing sexual health-related materials to parents of early adolescents aged 12- to 14-years-old to strengthen parent-early adolescent sexual communication.

Book excerpt: This study aims to identify the barriers parents face in communicating with their pre-adolescent children about sexual topics and consent using the Theory of Planned Behavior and Feminist Theory to inform this research project. A cross-sectional survey was administered to a convenience sample of parents with pre-adolescent children (ages 9-13) via Amazon Mechanical Turk. The survey included validated scales to measure parents’ communication behaviors with their children about sexual topics and consent, their own family history regarding sex communication, and parents' attitudes and beliefs as they relate to religious affiliation regarding consent. By exploring these factors, this study contributes to the development of evidence-based interventions that can support parents in having these crucial conversations and ultimately improve early adolescent sexual health outcomes.

The CFT framework acknowledges the ways in which couples navigate their relationship with technology and a partner simultaneously, and it attends to, and in some cases incorporates the role of technology in therapeutic ways. Included in the authors’ discussion of how different technologies affect relationships is • a survey of what individuals’ motivations of usage are • an examination of the specific issues that emerge in treatment • a study of the risks particularly relevant to intimate relationships, and • an introduction of the first-ever technology-based genogram. They also examine technological usage across different developmental points in a couple’s lifespan, with attention given throughout to people from various cultural backgrounds. Along with the CFT framework, the authors also introduce a new discipline of family research: Couple and Family Technology. This discipline integrates three broad perspectives in family science and helps therapists maintain a systemic focus in assessing and treating couples where issues of the Internet and new media are problematic.
