Book excerpt: The objective of the EURO-QUAL programme has been to improve the quality of care for the individual patient. At the same time the need for harmonisation of health care in Europe was recognised. This Quality Improvement System (QIS) for orthodontic care in Europe comprises of 'Guidelines for how to implement a QIS' and reference material from the project teams: Financial Resources, Professional Development, Consumer Satisfaction, and Industrial Co-operation. In this respect the following topics are discussed: * The differences and similarities in local (national) quality initiatives. * The use of databases, as a technique to improve quality by comparing one's own performance against that of colleagues. * The influence of the different national systems of funding on both the amount of care provided as well as the quality of care. * The contents and the quality of the educational programmes, at all levels of orthodontic care. * Promotion of patients' rights and responsibilities before, during and after the orthodontic treatment. * A common goal and common language with the industrial partners by which the interaction can be optimised and communication will be enriched. This book provides the background information for the appropriate use of the European Orthodontic Quality Manual (EOQM). Strategies for the implementation of a QIS in orthodontics, taking into account the complex of the outlined aspects, make this book interesting for the orthodontic professional as well as the stakeholders (education, funding, industry, and consumers) in orthodontic care.

Book The WhiteTeeth App

    Book Details:
  • Author : Janneke Francisca Maria Scheerman
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 9789463750806
  • Pages : 215 pages

Download or read book The WhiteTeeth App written by Janneke Francisca Maria Scheerman and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the absence of good oral hygiene, patients with fixed orthodontic appliances can develop white spot lesions that remain visible for the rest of their lives. As the opacity or discoloration of these lesions can seriously compromise dental aesthetics, orthodontic treatment may not be entirely successful. It is therefore necessary to establish the extent to which innovative oral health promotion programs can further improve patients’ oral health behaviors and outcomes. However, little is known about the effectiveness of continuous behavioral support via mobile phones (mHealth). This thesis describes the development and evaluation of a mobile app—the WhiteTeeth app—that was designed to promote good oral health behavior among adolescent orthodontic patients. The app’s development was guided by intervention mapping (IM). Development thus starts with an analysis of the health problem, which includes identification of the psychosocial factors related to the health behavior. To identify the psychosocial factors underlying oral health behavior in our target group, we conducted a systematic literature review with meta-analysis and a cross-sectional clinical study. Then, to target these psychosocial factors and facilitate continuous behavioral support, various behavior change techniques were incorporated into the app. The app provides feedback on users’ oral health behavior and allows users to evaluate and monitor their behavior. Finally, a randomized controlled trial was conducted. This showed that the app improved oral hygiene in adolescent orthodontic patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Helping patients achieve an optimal quality of life through patient-centered treatment planning should be the ultimate goal of all oral health care providers. However, this issue extends beyond the realm of the individual clinician's office. This text presents quality-of-life research from various fields, including psychology, public health, and general health care; discusses how a patient-centered approach can be applied to basic oral and craniofacial research, clinical dental practice, community dental health issues, and dental education; and addresses how oral health-related quality of life relates to treating and understanding different patient populations, such as children with special needs, medically compromised patients, patients with oral cancer, and patients with chronic facial pain. Also discussed is how factors such as race/ethnicity, gender, and age can affect oral health-related quality-of-life concerns and treatment strategies. Finally, the book offers an outlook on the role that oral health-related quality of life will play in future research and dental education.

Book IMPROVING ORAL HYGIENE IN ADOLESCENT ORTHODONTIC PATIENTS WITH SBIRT BASED INTERVENTION

Download or read book IMPROVING ORAL HYGIENE IN ADOLESCENT ORTHODONTIC PATIENTS WITH SBIRT BASED INTERVENTION written by Allison Clark Joe and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an SBIRT-modeled intervention on improving oral hygiene in adolescent orthodontic patients with fixed appliances. Methods: A prospective, randomized trial was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of an SBIRT-inspired strategy aimed at improving oral hygiene. Subjects were recruited from patients undergoing orthodontic treatment at the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics. The subjects were in the permanent dentition, and were being treated with full fixed appliances in both arches. Subjects were screened for caries risk, and individuals with moderate-high risk for caries were allocated randomly to either a control (traditional oral hygiene instruction) or intervention (SBIRT protocol) group. Plaque (PI) and gingival index (GI) scores were collected at baseline (T0), 1-2 month follow-up (T1), and 3-4 month follow-up (T2). At the T1 follow-up, those non-responsive to the intervention were referred for treatment by a hygienist. Subjects also completed a pre- and post-intervention survey to evaluate change in homecare habits and self-assessment of hygiene. Results: A total of 25 (15 female, 10 male) patients were recruited for the study and had baseline (T0) data collected. The majority of the sample was female (60.0%) and African American (68.0%), and the average age of the sample was 13.6±1.5 years. Regarding caries risk, 64.0% were classified as high risk, while 36.0% had moderate risk. No significant differences in baseline scores were observed between the two trial arms for key demographics. Of the initial 25 subjects, 19 (7 control, 12 intervention) had T1 data collected. The mean PI and GI scores for both groups improved from T0 to T1. There were greater differences between T0 to T1 for the SBIRT group when compared to the control: PI improved 0.36±0.44 for the intervention group and 0.18±0.45 for the control group; GI improved 0.50±0.28 for the intervention group and 0.09±0.37 for the control group. Brushing and flossing frequency also increased for both groups. Conclusions: The SBIRT intervention group had greater improvement in oral hygiene than traditional oral hygiene instruction after a 1-2 month follow up. An MI protocol for improving oral hygiene in adolescent patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment shows promise in changing patient behaviors and outlook in regards to oral health. However, due to small sample size and significant loss to follow-up as a result of school and clinic closures due to the novel coronavirus (SARS-Cov-2), a more extensive study with a larger sample size is necessary to definitively prove the effectiveness of MI in improving oral hygiene.

Your mouth is the gateway to your body and is the most critical organ for improving your health, from childhood onward.
