Book Film Production and Tourism Development in Nigeria An Analysis of the Impact of Media on Tourism

Download or read book Film Production and Tourism Development in Nigeria An Analysis of the Impact of Media on Tourism written by Chinwe Chimezie Uwaoma and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 4.5, University of Ibadan, language: English, abstract: This paper is about how the media in Nigeria can initiate a sense of departure to tourism sites through its movies/television programs. A major trend in tourism, this decade is the move away from the appreciation of the traditional elements of the practice-sight scenery, good weather and acquisition of luxury items –towards urban heritage –based, short –break, tourism emphasizing culture as products. The notion of departure or exit is in part initiated and constructed by a multiplicity of media, most importantly the film and television industries and packaged as advertisement. The entrepreneurs or developers of the media even in developing countries, perceive the countryside, specifically, not as a natural living environment of limited socio-economic value, but as a commodity that can be packaged and sold for a price to viewers. That is, the rural localities, locally and internationally have become popular contexts for a myriad of television serials or the setting of films and videos. The images the media foster are beamed into the homes of many people and succeed in constraining the audience to enjoy an experience of the great outdoors in the comfort and safety of the idyllic places. In other words, the viewers may be moved to go in search of the locations used anticipating the findings of what they saw on their screens and may be encountering the very role players in the presentations. Films and movies may and actually in certain circumstances serve to generate interests in locations used, especially when the setting involves attractive countryside and captivating cultural practices of the people. The films, therefore, have become of great interest to the public because they package specific cultures of the idyllic lifestyles and promote market values that can generate huge incomes.

Book Tourism in the Developing World

Download or read book Tourism in the Developing World written by Martha Honey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tourism industry can help promote peace and stability in developing countries by providing jobs, generating income, diversifying the economy, protecting the environment, and promoting cross-cultural awareness. Tourism is the fourth largest industry in the global economy. However, key challenges must be addressed if peace-enhancing benefits from this industry are to be realized. These include investments in infrastructure and human capacity, the development of comprehensive national strategies, the adoption of robust regulatory frameworks, mechanisms to maximize in-country foreign currency earnings, and efforts to reduce crime and corruption. The case studies of India, Kenya, and Nigeria reveal several important points. First, relative peace and a degree of economic development are preconditions for a successful tourist industry. Second, although it has the capacity to help promote peace and prosperity, tourism can also cause a great deal of harm unless it is carefully developed. Third, to deliver optimal benefits, tourism must be respectful of the environment and mindful of cultural and social traditions. Fourth, tourism must be supported by a coherent national strategy and robust laws. For tourism to help deliver prosperity and stabilize communities effectively, specific action must be taken by three main constituencies: host communities, host governments, and foreign stakeholders.

Book Sustainable Urban Tourism in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Sustainable Urban Tourism in Sub Saharan Africa written by Llewellyn Leonard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates urban tourism development in Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the challenges and risks involved, but also showcasing the potential benefits. Whilst much is written on Africa’s rural environments, little has been written about the tourism potential of the vast natural, cultural and historical resources in the continent’s urban areas. Yet these opportunities also come with considerable environmental, social and political challenges. This book interrogates the interactions between urban risks, tourism and sustainable development in Sub-Saharan African urban spaces. It addresses the underlying issues of governance, power, ownership, collaboration, justice, community empowerment and policies that influence tourism decision-making at local, national and regional levels. Interrogating the intricate relationships between tourism stakeholders, this book ultimately reflects on how urban risk can be mitigated, and how sustainable urban tourism can be harnessed for development. The important insights in this book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners across Tourism, Geography, Urban Development, and African Studies.

Book Enhancing and Developing Sustainable Tourism Through Landscaping in Nigeria

Download or read book Enhancing and Developing Sustainable Tourism Through Landscaping in Nigeria written by Dorcas Ayeni and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to develop tourism and diversify as well as redirect the Nigerian economy away from crude oil as the sole foreign exchange earner is overwhelming for several reasons. Not only does tourism hold huge capacity to forge effective backward and forward linkages with the rest of the economy, it has proved to be a significant foreign exchange earner and a major source of employment and income in many developing countries. Given Nigeria's many tourist attractions, tourism has the potential to attract huge internal capital investment as well as foreign direct investments necessary to enhance tourist infrastructure provisions and services. This is particularly so in rural areas given that most tourist attractions in Nigeria are rural based, and where tourism development can become a catalyst for rural development particularly where tourism is developed within the tenets of sustainable development. Presently, Nigeria's tourism industry is rudimentary, undeveloped, and suffers from chronic shortages of infrastructure as well as supporting and enhancing institutions. In particular, the lack of awareness and appreciation for landscaping in particular, and the environment in general, has compounded the problems of tourism development in Nigeria. This research is motivated by the desire to understand the structure, conduct, and performance of the tourism sector in Nigeria and emphasise, amongst other factors, the significant role landscaping could play in the desire for sustainable tourism in Nigeria. In conducting the research, a mixed methods research approach was employed using the sequential strategy of quantitative survey; followed by a qualitative data gathering method using interviews. These were conducted among tourism stakeholders within two geopolitical zones in Nigeria, namely, the North-central and the South-west. This approach was informed by the pragmatic philosophy adopted by the researcher, which allows the triangulation of methods in order to come up with a more comprehensive and complementary results on the focus of this research. Data obtained were critically analysed using the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSSx) and Nvivo8 software. The research identified setbacks which have prevented sustainable tourism development in Nigeria. Also is the need for the beautification of the attractions through landscaping as well as the provision of tourism infrastructures. The implication of the findings is that if landscaping is not made the centre of tourism policy, tourism is likely to fall short of expectation. A conceptual framework for the way forward was suggested based on the outcome of the analyses and two regression models developed and presented the roles landscaping could play in sustainable tourism and in Nigeria economic diversification. If implemented, the suggestions should provide a solid basis for redressing the current pitfalls in Nigeria's tourism landscape.

Book Tourist Attractions in Nigeria

Download or read book Tourist Attractions in Nigeria written by Ali Mohammed and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-12-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria's tourism industry has come a long way and evolved over time due to the efforts of individuals in the tourism space who have ensured that the sector plays an important role in the growth of the economy. The Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) was established in 1992 by Decree No. 86 of 1991, during the administration of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. The corporation was initially known as the Nigerian Tourist Association before it was changed to NTDC in 1992. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo created The Federal Ministry of Tourism and Culture in June 1999 to promote the nation's rich tourism potentials and cultural heritage through identification, development, and marketing of the diverse cultural and tourism opportunities. In 2005, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo set up a Presidential Committee to come up with a Nigeria Tourism Development Master Plan. Tourism in Nigeria centers largely on events, due to the country's ample amount of ethnic groups, but also includes rain forests, savannah, waterfalls, and other natural attractions. Tourists spent US$2.6 billion in Nigeria in 2015. The history of tourism in Nigeria is intertwined with the history of the country itself. Visited in the 15th century by Europeans, Nigeria became a center for the trade in enslaved people. Following independence in 1960, organized tourism started with the establishment of the Nigeria Tourist Association in 1962. During the military era (1966-1999) and the early democratic dispensation (1990-2005), tourism development was uncontrolled and yielded low gains.
