Book excerpt: This action research study explored the advantages and disadvantages of the Student Led Conference (SLC) format through the eyes of the school community. In the second year of its implementation middle school students (grades 6-8), their parents, and the middle school teachers of a private school were surveyed regarding their experiences with the SLC process. Twenty representatives from each group were then randomly selected for interviews to provide deeper understanding of the survey data. Both the surveys and the interviews were created with the following questions in mind: (a) What expectations did each group have approaching the conference, (b) how effective was communication during the conference, and (c) did the SLC promote positive change in the parties involved? As the qualitative and quantitative data overlapped, it became clear that the SLC had the potential to positively impact any school community that decided to implement it. Several key issues, however, needed to be addressed to maximize its potential benefit. Expectations regarding the conference should have been dealt with at the outset, parents needed access to information they could not acquire at home, and accountability measures must be established at the beginning of the year. Were these issues dealt with properly, the SLC would be a welcome addition to any school and a force for positive change.

Another issue with this style of conference is the lack of student presence. When students take an active role in their education, self-assessing their work and keeping track of progress through the use of portfolios, there is often an increase in student engagement as well as achievement. Students who take ownership over their work also increase their self-efficacy. This project seeks to solve the problem of parent-teacher conferences and the lack of student engagement and ownership in their learning through the implementation of student-led conferences (SLC). The project plans a pilot program for the use of student portfolios and SLCs that will be ultimately tested through a series of parent/guardian and student surveys to determine the success of the project.
