Book What Parents Think

Download or read book What Parents Think written by Kaivan Yuen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle school transitions can cause a decline in academic achievement and motivation in learning for many students. Low income underrepresented students are especially vulnerable to this transition. Parental involvement also tends to decrease during the middle school years. This qualitative study examined the elementary to middle school transition for low income underrepresented students, from the perspectives of parents. The study took place in an inner city middle school and the sample consisted of six parents, a study that cannot be generalized to other middle schools. Each parent was interviewed four times for the duration of four months and in-depth case studies were developed for each parent. The interviews focused on parents' perceptions of their ability to help their children with the transition, the barriers they faced, and the strategies they used. Parents, especially non-English speaking parents, found that it was more difficult to provide academic support to their children at the middle school level. Whenever parents could not provide assistance to their children, they first relied on their own network of friends and family, then they went to the community for help, and finally they approached the school for support. One practice that parents held in high regard was having consistent communication with teachers and children. Parents wanted a partnership with the school and their own children in order to help their children attain academic success. Parents reported that taking an active interest in their children's lives resulted in higher achievement and less behavior problems in school. Contrary to the assumption that parents withdrew themselves from their children's lives during middle school, this study found that parents actually wanted to remain highly involved in their children's lives. Many parents were willing to volunteer in the classrooms, but the school never asked parents for their help. Two major concerns parents had about the middle school were school violence and the decrease in academic achievement from students during the initial months after the transition. Parents were very appreciative of the strict environment and academically challenging demands of middle school, which they believe thwarted some of the potential school safety concerns.

Book Transitioning from Middle School to High School

Download or read book Transitioning from Middle School to High School written by Anita Kartha and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate project presents a handbook derived from reviewing literature that students, parents and school counselors can use to ease the transition for middle school Latino students into high school. This handbook or guide describes the social, emotional and academic challenges that research has shown to affect Latino students, and provides a culturally relevant preparation program. This handbook can be implemented step by step in the final year of middle school, with school counselor and parent involvement, and will continue into the first few years of high school. Along with transitioning issues such as self-esteem, making and keeping friends (Akos & Galassi, 2004), setting goals, successfully completing courses, and college and career planning, research shows that Latino students have issues of family obligations and expectations particular to them (McGoldrick, Giordano, & Garcia-Preto, 2005). Latino cultural concerns, language barriers and socio-economic factors facing Latino students, and affecting their successful transition from middle school to high school are also included in this handbook. It also provides interventions that are school-based as well as techniques that parents can use at home to support and encourage the successful transition of their child into high school. The variety of strategies included in this handbook consider Bandura's (1989) theory suggesting that behaviors are learned through observing and imitating models, and Vygotsky's (1978) theory that stresses the active engagement of the social and physical environments in promoting cognitive growth. The methods described in this handbook involve the use of peer social support groups, parental support, school counselor academic guidance, and career exploration resources. Further, strategies to facilitate the development of a road map are included, which are intended to support a healthy self-image as well as academic success. Student achievement is promoted and encouraged throughout this handbook with guidelines aimed at assisting students in setting realistic goals and articulating a sound plan to achieve them. Within the steps outlined in the handbook, there is opportunity for periodic student and parent checkpoints where students and parents can reflect on the effectiveness of each step after the completion of each step and prior to advancing to the next step. School counselors at the middle school and high school levels can utilize these student and parent reflections to mentor the student while assisting students to plan an appropriate path aimed at easing the transition from middle school to high school and ultimately leading to success in high school.

Book Captivating Campuses Proven Practices that Promote College Student Persistence Engagement and Success

Download or read book Captivating Campuses Proven Practices that Promote College Student Persistence Engagement and Success written by Nicholas D. Young and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role does student engagement play in educational achievement on the post-secondary campus? And, what factors affect each student’s ability and motivation to engage with the full college experience, both in and outside of the classroom? It is now widely acknowledged that post-secondary institutions must not only focus on facilitating the transition from high school to college, but that they must also make a concerted effort to listen to the needs and experiences of their students in order to achieve maximal involvement within the college environment. Students need to be captivated by at least one element of their college experience - whether that be in the classroom, dorm, or extracurricular activities - in order to form a bond with their institution and feel motivated and attached enough to put in the hard work until graduation. Campuses that capture their students’ interests and passions, provide spaces for them to develop as individuals, and opportunities to form meaningful professional and personal relationships have a far greater chance of both retaining their students to graduation and helping them develop as whole human beings who will contribute. This book studies the many facets of student engagement as it attempts to define student engagement, differentiating it from involvement, and covers seminal theories of college student engagement. The contributions to this volume discuss the powerful role that relationships play in helping students identify their interests and talents, and other examples of best practice when it comes to creating engaging classroom experiences, such as collaborative projects with peers, study abroad, and learning that is situated in real-life problems that are of importance to the student.

Book Educational Transitions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite variations of educational systems, when transitions in education occur, the pedagogical challenges that teachers and pupils undergo are quite similar across the globe. Transitions are phases in which pupils, peer groups and teachers have to renegotiate and rebuild their learning environment in the educational context. These various transitions in students' learning paths significantly impact on schools' everyday life. This volume explores transitions at all stages of educational progression, i.e., nursery to primary, primary to secondary, and secondary to post-school. It also examines these transitions across a variety of countries and types of schools. Educational Transitions provides up-to-date literature, research and theoretical constructs that help readers understand the issues, social-emotional-psychological dimensions, and evidence-based possible interventions to support an individual through these educational transitions. It also allows scholars, teachers, and students to critically analyse how lessons learned from one country can be adapted for other countries' educational systems.

Book Creating Effective Transitions

Download or read book Creating Effective Transitions written by C. Thomas Potter and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses primarily on elementary to middle school transitions. This book was developed with a two-fold premise: one, that educators and parents understand the role they play in meeting the basic developmental needs of individual students during times of transition; and two, that school leaders understand how critically important it is for organizations to create structured transition processes to better ensure student success before, during and after transitions that supports the growth and development of students. This book includes authentic scenarios that are research-based to help combat the barriers associated with the transitional moves elementary students may experience. The goal is that school organizations and institutions will work collectively to strategically develop district-wide and inter-agency (high school and college) transition plans to help students with these critical periods.
