Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police Administration, 11th Edition, is a best-selling textbook that examines police administration from multiple perspectives: a systems perspective (emphasizing the interrelatedness among units and organizations); a traditional, structural perspective (administrative principles, management functions, and the importance of written guidelines); a human behavioral perspective (the human element in organizations); and a strategic management perspective (communications and information systems, performance evaluation, strategies and tactics, and prevailing and promising approaches to increasing effectiveness of police agencies). This book describes how one city developed a collaborative effort between law-enforcement and mental health professionals in order to help these children and their families. The Child Development-Community Policing Program in New Haven, Connecticut, was initiated in 1991 to deal more effectively with children who are victims or perpetrators of violence. Police officers, preparing for the new responsibilities of community-based policing, have become familiar with an array of strategies for preventing and responding to community violence. Mental health professionals have learned firsthand about the texture and trauma of the lives of children at risk. Police and mental health professionals working together have been able to mobilize treatment services more quickly and effectively and to assure that treatment plans are carried out. This manual provides a model, case studies, and guidelines for training the participants, operating a consultation service, and evaluating the program on an ongoing basis, all of which will be useful for other communities seeking to implement a similar project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings to the forefront the realization that a successful police career involves not only surviving the danger involved in policing but also psychological survival. In this book, a mixed approach is employed that includes research and some practical suggestions from practitioners on how best to deal with the police health crisis. It is based on research associated with police mental health together with the subsequent effects on officers’ performance, physical health, and lifestyle. It begins by outlining the current challenges faced by police, including increased civil unrest, negative public reactions, and a biological siege brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and depression are reviewed and how these two conditions have been shown to promote negative health issues such as cardiovascular disease and gastrointestinal disorders, comorbid psychological conditions as well as suicide. Resilience is also discussed and its role in ameliorating stress. An overview of factors related to resilience is provided and some of the mechanisms that underpin resilience in police work are examined. Additionally, suggestions are made that may help police organizations foster resiliency in officers. The final chapter asks the question, “Where do we go from here?” The chapter discusses current legislation that will help police deal with the problem of psychological and physical health and suicide. Interventions discussed include the need for wellness programs, reducing stress through the police organization, peers support development, the use of mindfulness as a stress reduction strategy, PTSD mitigation, and reducing the fatigue health effects of shift work.

This department implemented a wellness program approximately three years ago, which consisted of a peer-staffed Wellness Team and access to the Cordico App, which provided services ranging from mental health to diet and exercise to all WSPD employees and their families. Book excerpt: Unacceptably high rates of stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, and divorce have plagued the law enforcement profession for decades. Ask most police officers, firefighters, paramedics, prison guards, and anyone associated with police wellness and they will tell you "everything is fine." Yet the rate of police suicide continues to climb because of the profession's stigma against seeking help. Officers embrace their responsibility "to preserve and protect" by taking care of others ... but who is taking care of them? Through interviews with some of the most renowned professionals in their fields, author and speaker Dr. Ron Rufo, a highly decorated, 22-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, puts a spotlight on the importance of seeking mental health intervention before a minor issue becomes a major crisis. In Breaking the Barrier, Rufo's fourth book and his second on police wellness, he explains why emotional wellness is as essential as officers' tactical training. He and dozens of supportive professionals-from the fields of psychology, sleep medicine, religion, leadership management, epidemiology and environmental health, holistic medicine, exercise physiology, and alternative medicine-offer strategies to achieve and maintain emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual wellness throughout an officer's career. Ron Rufo is on a crusade to rid the law enforcement profession of its constant and relentless shadow of despair. After describing the history of the police culture that contributes to today's physical and mental health issues, he presents a cornucopia of tools for intervention and support to help all law enforcement officers achieve a work/life balance that will lead to a long, healthy, and well-deserved retirement.

Book Managing Law Enforcement Wellness Programs

Download or read book Managing Law Enforcement Wellness Programs written by Rickey C. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature search, interviews, and other futures methodologies were used to study the impact of a police officer's environment and lifestyle on officers' health in small-sized and medium-sized law enforcement agencies by the year 2000. A Nominal Group Technique panel was formed, consisting of experts in physical fitness, mental health, medicine, law enforcement, city government, and the legal profession to define the future of this issue. The following five trends were forecasted: agency responsibility for wellness of employees with fitness incentives, establishment of standards for levels of fitness screening and monitoring, counseling/awareness management of stress-related dysfunctions, availability of health information and new technology applied to wellness, and health costs for personnel and local government. The high-probability events were identified as gang and drug wars reaching overwhelming proportions, causing a state of emergency; require statewide fitness standards with absolute minimum standards state in job descriptions, mandatory fitness programs, court cases and decisions require levels of fitness, and wellness programs adopted by a majority of law enforcement agencies. These future scenarios were created using the data provided by the Nominal Group panel. The strategic management plan looks at the management of wellness programs in a small California police agency. The selected policy strategies are the development of a fitness master plan for each officer; the development of a policy to maintain minimum physical performance criteria for all sworn personnel; and the development of a policy that facilitates the appropriate culture that would reward, value, and encourage wellness lifestyles in the organization, the individual, and the working environment. The report also discusses implementation planning, commitment planning, management structure, and monitoring and evaluation.
