Book excerpt: Word and Glory challenges recent claims that Gnosticism, especially as expressed in the Nag Hammadi tractate Trimorphic Protennoia, is the most natural and illuminating background for understanding the Prologue of the Fourth Gospel. Scriptural allusions and interpretive traditions suggest that Jewish wisdom tradition, mediated by the synagogue of the diaspora, lies behind the Prologue and the Fourth Gospel as a whole, not some form of late first-century Gnosticism. Several features of the Fourth Gospel reflect the synagogue and nascent Christianity's struggle to advance and defend its beliefs about Jesus who, as God's son and Agent, was understood as the embodiment of the Divine Word. All of the ingredients that make up Johannine christology derive from dominical tradition, refracted through the lens of Jewish interpretive traditions. There is no compelling evidence that this christology derived from or was influenced by gnostic mythology. Word and Glory also develops and tests criteria for assessing the relative value of post-New Testament sources for the interpretation of New Testament documents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Better Living": Advertising, Media, and the New Vocabulary of Business Leadership, 1935-1955 is a history of how big business learned to be both entertaining and persuasive when talking to the public. Examining the years from the Depression to postwar prosperity, "Better Living" follows the dissemination of a politically competitive claim of "more," "new," and "better" in industry and in life. Beginning with the changes in business-government relations during the New Deal, this study looks at the ways in which politically active corporations and their leaders learned how to speak - at a time when speaking was not enough." "Using archival sources such as the NBC, Ford Motor Company, DuPont, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt collections, William L. Bird, Jr., establishes the importance of industrial films and their role in public relations and employee relations, as well as the use of dramatic radio productions in corporate public relations. The author examines the interplay between general mass radio and print advertising, radio program sponsorship and scriptwriting, sponsored motion pictures and television entertainment, as well as exhibitions and industrial fairs and the role these media played in shaping ideas about American business and political and cultural institutions in this country for the decades to come." --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I'm still trying to sort out my emotions after finishing this book. The ending was totally not what I expected. At first I was angry, but as I sat and thought about the book as a whole, I realized that it was an incredibly clever read. The ending had a significant impact on me, stressing me out. I experienced a wave of different emotions, each having a profound influence on my sleep. The next morning I was still going back and forth as to whether or not I actually liked the book. In fact, I went back and forth on my opinion for hours. In the end I thought Brooks did a wonderful job. Not many novels allow you to feel so many different emotions. I went from annoyance, to shock, to anger, and finally clarity about the situation. How many authors are able to bring out so many emotions from their readers?"-Goodreads Reviewer A one-of-kind thriller that takes place during the biggest annual cycling race-The Tour de France 21 Days of exhilarating action A covenant jersey being battled over by teammates A young man struggling with internal demons When Nick Carney is asked to ride the Tour de France in support of his teammate, and last year's winner, Jack Bomber, he never imagined he would be in the yellow jersey after the prologue.
