Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prolegomena to Theism Theism is the science of the fundament, of the norms or commandments and of the positive effects of religion, demonstrated from the concretely ontological and actual standpoint. This work is intended to serve as an introduction to Theism. It begins with a strictly systematic exposition of the logical laws and categories and, from the empirical standpoint, logically explains the entitative basis, the entitative process and the entitative effect of life, thus giving a total logical solution of all fundamental problems of philosophy. The complete exposition of Theism is now in prepara tion, hence many practical inquiries must be deferred until its completion. Download or read book The Resurrection of Theism written by Stuart C. Hackett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-21 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian world view, contends the author, both needs and embodies a thoroughgoing, rational apologetic as a manifestation of its relevance to the contemporary mind. . . . Christian faith should be defended in terms of criteria which center in rational objectivity as the norm of truth and evaluation. The author, who stands in the tradition of Aquinas, Butler, Orr, and Tennant, deals first with the problem of epistemological approach (part 1). Then he tackles the apologetic of natural revelation, first setting forth the inadequacy of every major alternate to rational empiricism (part 2), then demonstrating the existence of the God of theism (part 3). Each chapter is well outlined, and these outlines appear together in an Analytical Table of Contents. This feature, as well as a bibliography and index, makes this a useful textbook for courses in apologetics and philosophy.

Download or read book The Presence of the Word written by Walter J. Ong and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1967-01-01 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative exploration of the nature and history of the word in some of its social, psychological, literary, phenomenological, and religious dimensions argues that the word is initially aural and in the last analysis always remains sound; it cannot be reduced to any other category. Father Ong contends that sound is essentially an event manifesting power and personal presence, and his descriptive analysis of the development of the media of verbal expression, from their oral sources through the laborious transfer to the visual world and then to contemporary means of electronic communication, shows that the predicament of the human word is the predicament of man himself. Examining the close alliance of the spoken word with the sense of the sacred, particularly in the Hebreo-Christian tradition, he reveals that in a world where presence has penetrated time and space as never before, modern man must find the God who has given himself in the Word which brings man more into the world of sound than of sight.
Download or read book Handmaid to Theology written by Winfried Corduan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A most needed and creative beginning in theological prolegomena, says Norman L. Geisler of Handmaid to Theology. In this work the long-neglected use of philosophy in evangelical theology is overcome. Philosophical Prolegomena does not in this case constitute an introduction to theology, preliminary material of which one must dispose before delving into the actual content of divine revelation. Instead it constitutes a handmaid to theology, the philosophical categories that necessarily help to shape each doctrine. In addition to demonstrating the inevitable reliance of theology on certain philosophical concepts, the author pleads for a clear distinction between biblical theology and systematic theology within the evangelical tradition. Particularly helpful . . . says Geisler, is the emphasis on the need to use biblically compatible concepts in order to construct a systematic theology. After two introductory chapters (What Is Prolegomena? and Prolegomena: The Starting Point), the author devotes two chapters to the doctrine of man, as many to the doctrine of revelation, three to the doctrine of God, and a final chapter to the doctrine of regeneration. This book turns over new ground in theological prolegomena, concludes Geisler. Its pace-setting insights could, and I hope will, signal a return to a proper harmony between philosophy and biblical theology in the practice of systematic theology among evangelicals.
Download or read book Prolegomena written by Cooper Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Luther Renaissance in the early twentieth-century, many scholars of the Reformation period have argued for a strong discontinuity between the early Protestant reformers and the following age of Protestant Scholasticism. Such a claim is exemplified by Radical Lutheranism, which purports that Luther's theology is incommensurate with that of the scholastic movements of the seventeenth century. In this work, Jordan Cooper defends the scholastic approach as a genuine outgrowth of Reformation theology and offers a critique of the theological system of Radical Lutheranism. He does this through a thorough exposition of the method used by Martin Chemnitz, Johann Gerhard, and other post-Reformation thinkers. He demonstrates that the foundational metaphysical assumptions of the Lutheran scholastics are both consistent with the Reformation and necessary for the church today. This book is the beginning of a series titled A Contemporary Protestant Scholastic Theology.

Download or read book Creation Regained written by Albert M. Wolters and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: with a Postcript coauthored by Michael W. Goheen In print for two decades and translated into eight languages, Albert Wolters's classic formulation of an integrated Christian worldview has been revised and expanded to reach new readers beyond the generation that has already benefited from this clear, concise proposal for transcending the false dichotomy between sacred and secular. Wolters begins by defining the nature and scope of a worldview, distinguishing it from philosophy and theology. He then outlines a Reformed analysis of the three basic categories in human history -- creation, fall, and redemption -- arguing that while the fall reaches into every corner of the world, Christians are called to participate in Christ's redemption of all creation. This Twentieth Anniversary edition features a new concluding chapter, coauthored with Michael Goheen, that helpfully places the discussion of worldview in a broader narrative and missional context.
