Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Christian world view," contends the author, "both needs and embodies a thoroughgoing, rational apologetic as a manifestation of its relevance to the contemporary mind. . . . Christian faith should be defended in terms of criteria which center in rational objectivity as the norm of truth and evaluation." The author, who stands in the tradition of Aquinas, Butler, Orr, and Tennant, deals first with the problem of epistemological approach (part 1). Then he tackles the apologetic of natural revelation, first setting forth the inadequacy of every major alternate to rational empiricism (part 2), then demonstrating the existence of the God of theism (part 3). Each chapter is well outlined, and these outlines appear together in an "Analytical Table of Contents." This feature, as well as a bibliography and index, makes this a useful textbook for courses in apologetics and philosophy.

Book Prolegomena to a Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Prolegomena to a Philosophy of Religion written by J. L. Schellenberg and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is no attempt here to lay down as inviolable or to legislate certain ways of looking at things or ways of proceeding for philosophers of religion, only proposals for how to deal with a range of basic issues—proposals that I hope will ignite much fruitful discussion and which, in any case, I shall take as a basis for my own ongoing work in the field."—from the Preface Providing an original and systematic treatment of foundational issues in philosophy of religion, J. L. Schellenberg's new book addresses the structure of religious and irreligious belief, the varieties of religious skepticism, and the nature of religion itself. From the author's searching analysis of faith emerges a novel understanding of propositional faith as requiring the absence of belief. Schellenberg asks what the aims of the field should be, setting out a series of principles for carrying out some of the most important of these aims. His account of justification considers not only belief but also other responses to religious claims and distinguishes the justification of responses, propositions, and persons. Throughout Prolegomena to a Philosophy of Religion, Schellenberg is laying the groundwork for an elaboration of his own vision while at the same time suggesting how philosophers might rethink assumptions guiding most of today's work in analytic philosophy of religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinguished Scandinavian scholar has undertaken a fresh study of themes he examined in earlier writings. Meaning and Method contains the results of Nygren's lifetime of thought, addressed to the most fundamental concerns of philosophy and theology. In this book Anders Nygren delves into these and other questions: What is the meaning of meaning? What are we to do when one person declares meaningless what another finds supremely meaningful? Is there any way of knowing which is right? Can we arrive at a common understanding of what is meaningful? The author contends that contemporary philosophy does point to such a common understanding. Philosophy, as put forth by Nygren, involves a recognition of diverse contexts of meaning. Through philosophy we can also develop a method by which the validity of these contexts may be scientifically tested. Nygren shows that the debate about the meaningfulness of religious language is not insoluble. He further establishes the scientific status of the two disciplines concerned with religious language--theology and the philosophy of religion. The author's approach calls for drastic revision in these disciplines, and he indicates many new directions for future work in them. Students and specialists will be fascinated by Nygren's own account of the philosophical ideas undergirding his theological work. This book also makes a major contribution to today's questions in both philosophy and theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A most needed and creative beginning in theological prolegomena, says Norman L. Geisler of Handmaid to Theology. In this work the long-neglected use of philosophy in evangelical theology is overcome. Philosophical Prolegomena does not in this case constitute an introduction to theology, preliminary material of which one must dispose before delving into the actual content of divine revelation. Instead it constitutes a handmaid to theology, the philosophical categories that necessarily help to shape each doctrine. In addition to demonstrating the inevitable reliance of theology on certain philosophical concepts, the author pleads for a clear distinction between biblical theology and systematic theology within the evangelical tradition. Particularly helpful . . . says Geisler, is the emphasis on the need to use biblically compatible concepts in order to construct a systematic theology. After two introductory chapters (What Is Prolegomena? and Prolegomena: The Starting Point), the author devotes two chapters to the doctrine of man, as many to the doctrine of revelation, three to the doctrine of God, and a final chapter to the doctrine of regeneration. This book turns over new ground in theological prolegomena, concludes Geisler. Its pace-setting insights could, and I hope will, signal a return to a proper harmony between philosophy and biblical theology in the practice of systematic theology among evangelicals.

Download or read book Prolegomena to Religious Pluralism written by P. Byrne and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-08-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the thesis that all religions are alike in referring and relating to a single, common transcendent and sacred reality. It treats this thesis as one in the philosophy of religion and systematically sets out its main philosophical strengths and weaknesses. The key to understanding and defending pluralism is argued to lie in a realist understanding of religion, which is defined by way of an account of the reference of names for sacred, transcendent reality.

The founder believes that such a religion will greatly stimulate intelligent effort for the improvement of human conditions and the advancement of the race in strength and excellence of character. Download or read book Prolegomena written by Cooper Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Luther Renaissance in the early twentieth-century, many scholars of the Reformation period have argued for a strong discontinuity between the early Protestant reformers and the following age of Protestant Scholasticism. Such a claim is exemplified by Radical Lutheranism, which purports that Luther's theology is incommensurate with that of the scholastic movements of the seventeenth century. In this work, Jordan Cooper defends the scholastic approach as a genuine outgrowth of Reformation theology and offers a critique of the theological system of Radical Lutheranism. He does this through a thorough exposition of the method used by Martin Chemnitz, Johann Gerhard, and other post-Reformation thinkers. He demonstrates that the foundational metaphysical assumptions of the Lutheran scholastics are both consistent with the Reformation and necessary for the church today. This book is the beginning of a series titled A Contemporary Protestant Scholastic Theology.
