This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prolegomena to St. Paul's Epistles to the Romans and the Ephesians I propose this term to lecture on the Epistle to the Romans, in itself an enormous subject. To deal properly with it would need not merely a longer term than this, but many terms. Even however in this unusually short term I hope that by rigorous selection of topics we may be able to get some substantial hold of the Epistle; and, owing to the peculiar position which it holds among St Paul's Epistles, even a very imperfect study of it will yield more instruction than a somewhat less imperfect study of, I believe we may say, any other single Epistle of st Paul would have done. In this case, perhaps more than usual, the benefit to be derived from attending lectures must be pro portional to the time and care spent upon the subject by members of the class in private work. The utmost that a lecturer can do is to supply suggestions which can be verified and followed up at home. This book was released on 2019-10-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This posthumous volume, published in 1895, contains two lectures delivered in the 1880s by the biblical scholar F. J. A. Hort, Professor of Divinity at Cambridge. In these lectures, Hort addresses the question of the dating of Romans and Ephesians, their purpose, and their original readership. He examines their context in the relationship of Judaism to Christianity in the Apostolic period and the difference between Gentile, Judaistic and Roman Christianity. By treating the Epistles as historical as well as religious artefacts and analysing their language and grammar as well as content, Hort argues for the authenticity of both texts and therefore for a first-century dating. The dating of the New Testament was a central concern of Hort toward the end of his career, and he argued against F. C. Baur and the Tbingen school, who placed it in the second century. These lectures present evidence to support his argument.

Book The Pauline Book and the Dilemma of Ephesians

Download or read book The Pauline Book and the Dilemma of Ephesians written by Benjamin J. Petroelje and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin J. Petroelje argues that how one reads Ephesians is a function of deeper questions about how to read the Pauline book. Petroelje suggests the contemporary consensus-that Ephesians depicts development of/away from the “real Paul”-is largely a construct of modern criticism, rooted in shifting strategies about how to read a letter collection that developed in the 19th-century. Using Ephesians 3:1-13 as a point of analysis, Petroelje theorizes that the text's “image of Paul” not only anticipates recent revisionist interpretations of Paul's Jewish identity and gentile gospel, but also holds together tensions in the collection itself surrounding these questions. By analysing ancient letter collections beside their own hermeneutical priorities, and applying this method to the late-antique and modern reception of the corpus Paulinum, Petroelje is able to historicize the origins of the split of Paul's corpus, revealing the constructed nature of the critical consensus on Ephesians and the effect that such modern reading strategies have on interpreting the letter. Urging a return to reading Ephesians alongside Pauline co-texts, Petroelje advocates for Ephesians as a crucial source for the study of Paul, whether Paul wrote it or not.
