Book excerpt: Since the Luther Renaissance in the early twentieth-century, many scholars of the Reformation period have argued for a strong discontinuity between the early Protestant reformers and the following age of Protestant Scholasticism. Such a claim is exemplified by Radical Lutheranism, which purports that Luther's theology is incommensurate with that of the scholastic movements of the seventeenth century. In this work, Jordan Cooper defends the scholastic approach as a genuine outgrowth of Reformation theology and offers a critique of the theological system of Radical Lutheranism. He does this through a thorough exposition of the method used by Martin Chemnitz, Johann Gerhard, and other post-Reformation thinkers. He demonstrates that the foundational metaphysical assumptions of the Lutheran scholastics are both consistent with the Reformation and necessary for the church today. The questions cannot be faced constructively, however, until the development of doctrine has been clearly charted, a historical as well as a theological assignment. In this unique introductory survey—more modest in scope but more scholarly in method than Cardinal Newman’s great programmatic essay of 1845—Mr. Pelikan presents three case histories of the particular doctrines that have crucial points of division among Christians. His cogent analyses of Cyprian on Original Sin, Athanasius on the Virgin Mary, and Hilary on the Holy Spirit demonstrate the interaction between the sacramental life of the Church and the intellectual work of the theologian that consistently marked the development of doctrine by the early Fathers. Prior to the appearance of Wellhausen, the theory proposed by Graf had been all but neglected. In it Graf had argued that the Levitical Law and related sections of the Pentateuch were not written until the fall of the kingdom of Judah, and that the Pentateuch in its present form was not accepted as authoritative until the reformation of Ezra. With Wellhausen's brilliant analysis of the literature and penetrating consideration of the sources, the Graf theory was accepted. Although today Wellhausen has been modified and revised, the development of contemporary Biblical criticism owes its present vitality and scope to the pioneering investigations of Wellhausen.
