Book excerpt: Scallops: Biology, Ecology, Aquaculture and Fisheries, Third Edition, continues its history as the definitive resource on scallops, covering all facets of scallop biology, including anatomy, taxonomy, physiology, ecology, larval biology, and neurobiology. More than thirty extensive chapters explore both fisheries and aquaculture for all species of scallops in all countries where they are fished or cultured. This treatise has been updated to include the most recent advances in research and the newest developments within the industry. As aquaculture remains one of the fastest-growing animal food-producing sectors, this reference becomes even more vital. It has all the available information on scallops needed to equip researchers to deal with the unique global issues in the field. Offers 30 detailed chapters on the development and ecology of scallops Provides chapters on various cultures of scallops in China, Japan, Scandinavia, Europe, Eastern North America, and Western North America Includes details of scallop reproduction, nervous system, and behavior, genetics, diseases, parasites, and much more Completely updated edition with valuable information on one of the most widely distributed shellfish in the world

Levesque and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) fishery is the most valuable wild scallop fishery in the world. Landings are primarily' adductor muscles, which are ideally creamy white and firm. Recently, significant numbers of dark brown to gray, flaccid and stringy-meats, caused by an apicomplexan, have been caught in areas of Georges Bank and the mid-Atlantic, and are a concern for the industry and management. To investigate the impacts of this disease, a technique to isolate gray from white meat scallops using anesthesia was developed. A four-month laboratory study was conducted comparing mortality rates and shell height-meat weight ratios of healthy and diseased scallops. The density of parasites with decreased meat quality was quantified using histological analysis, and GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) software.Furthermore, age and frequency of infestation by boring sponge (Cliona vastifica) and boring worm (Polydora sp.) were examined with their association to meat quality. Significantly higher mortality in gray-meat scallops compared to white-meat scallops correlated with an increase in the number of parasite nuclei and boring intensity. Additionally, smaller meat weights and extensive myodegeneration were observed with higher levels of infection. Based on these findings, it is important to consider diseased scallops in formulating applied harvestable biomass estimates and in future management strategies. Three general shell height-meat weight relationships are used in the stock assessment for sea scallops; however, a change in this relationship represents a change in biomass estimates. Gray-meat indicates imminent mortality, which also changes the estimate of natural mortality used in stock assessments. The frequency of diseased individuals affects the effort/day as well as the estimate of landings/day used to distribute allocations in the fishery. Understanding the impacts of this disease and how to manage the fishery in its presence is important for the future of the fishery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic Invertebrate Cell Culture is a very new field which has major applications in Aquaculture, Ecotoxicology and Pathology. In essence it is realised that pathogens behave differently in host cells than the impression gained from growth on agar plates. Another major application of invertebrate cell culture is an understanding of mechanisms involved in cellular and molecular responses to environmental change. This book aims to consider all relevant advances for the development of aquatic invertebrate cell culture.
