Book Demographic Projection Techniques for Regions and Smaller Areas

Download or read book Demographic Projection Techniques for Regions and Smaller Areas written by H. Craig Davis and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chapter 3, the author outlines a four-step projection procedure which is used throughout the remainder of the book. Chapter 4 describes how to project population size by comparing the growth pattern of the population under study with that of another population. The next chapter covers one of the most commonly employed techniques of population projection - the cohort-survival model, which is used not only to project the size of a population but also its composition in terms of age and sex groupings. The final chapter focuses on migration, generally the most volatile component of the basic demographic equation. Primarily written for courses in planning, this book is also useful for anyone having to make decisions affected by population trends, whether they involve planning for future growth or alerting local decisionmakers to external uncertainties that could have a serious impact on the future of their community.

Book Sea Level Rise for the Coasts of California Oregon and Washington

Download or read book Sea Level Rise for the Coasts of California Oregon and Washington written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tide gauges show that global sea level has risen about 7 inches during the 20th century, and recent satellite data show that the rate of sea-level rise is accelerating. As Earth warms, sea levels are rising mainly because ocean water expands as it warms; and water from melting glaciers and ice sheets is flowing into the ocean. Sea-level rise poses enormous risks to the valuable infrastructure, development, and wetlands that line much of the 1,600 mile shoreline of California, Oregon, and Washington. As those states seek to incorporate projections of sea-level rise into coastal planning, they asked the National Research Council to make independent projections of sea-level rise along their coasts for the years 2030, 2050, and 2100, taking into account regional factors that affect sea level. Sea-Level Rise for the Coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington: Past, Present, and Future explains that sea level along the U.S. west coast is affected by a number of factors. These include: climate patterns such as the El Niño, effects from the melting of modern and ancient ice sheets, and geologic processes, such as plate tectonics. Regional projections for California, Oregon, and Washington show a sharp distinction at Cape Mendocino in northern California. South of that point, sea-level rise is expected to be very close to global projections. However, projections are lower north of Cape Mendocino because the land is being pushed upward as the ocean plate moves under the continental plate along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. However, an earthquake magnitude 8 or larger, which occurs in the region every few hundred to 1,000 years, would cause the land to drop and sea level to suddenly rise.

Book From Globe to Grid The World of GIS Projections

Download or read book From Globe to Grid The World of GIS Projections written by YAMINI MALHOTRA and published by SGSH Publications. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of maps is a fascinating intersection of art and science, where the globe's vast complexities are distilled into flat representations we can hold, analyze, and understand. At the heart of this process lies a critical but often overlooked element: GIS projections. These mathematical methods enable us to transform the curved surface of the Earth into a flat map, preserving various attributes like area, shape, distance, and direction. While the concept may seem technical or abstract, the choice of projection can profoundly impact the way we interpret geographic information. In this book, " From Globe to Grid: The World of GIS Projections," we embark on a journey to demystify the intricate world of GIS projections. Our goal is to provide both newcomers and seasoned professionals with a clear, concise understanding of how different projections work, why they matter, and how they can be applied effectively in various contexts. We begin by exploring the fundamental principles behind map projections, laying a foundation for the more complex topics that follow. Each chapter delves into a specific type of projection—cylindrical, conic, azimuthal, and beyond—explaining their unique characteristics and appropriate applications. Through vivid illustrations, real-world examples, and practical tips, we aim to transform this seemingly technical subject into something accessible and engaging. Whether you're a geographer, a cartographer, a GIS professional, or simply someone with a curiosity about maps, this book is designed to be your guide through the maze of GIS projections. By the end of our journey together, you'll not only have a deeper appreciation for the art and science of mapmaking but also a toolkit of knowledge to apply in your own work and explorations. Mapping the world is an endeavour that has shaped human history, and GIS projections are the threads that weave this grand tapestry. We invite you to explore these threads with us, discovering how they shape our understanding of the world and empower us to visualize our planet in new and insightful ways. Welcome to the world of GIS projections—where the globe comes to life on the map!!

Book The long and short of mental time travel self projection over time scales large and small

Download or read book The long and short of mental time travel self projection over time scales large and small written by James M. Broadway and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers working in many fields of psychology and neuroscience are interested in the temporal structure of experience, as well as the experience of time, at scales of a few milliseconds up to a few seconds as well as days, months, years, and beyond. This Research Topic supposes that broadly speaking, the field of "time psychology" can be organized by distinguishing between "perceptual" and "conceptual" time-scales. Dealing with conceptual time: "mental time travel," also called mental simulation, self-projection, episodic-semantic memory, prospection/foresight, allows humans (and perhaps other animals) to imagine and plan events and experiences in their personal futures, based in large part on memories of their personal pasts, as well as general knowledge. Moreover, contents of human language and thought are fundamentally organized by a temporal dimension, enmeshed with it so thoroughly that it is usually expressible only through spatial metaphors. But what might such notions have to do with experienced durations of events lasting milliseconds up to a few seconds, during the so-called "present moment" of perception-action cycle time? This Research Topic is organized around the general premise that, by considering how mental time travel might "scale down" to time perception (and vice-versa, no less), progress and integrative synthesis within- and across- scientific domains might be facilitated. Bipolar configurations of future- and past-orientations of the self may be repeated in parallel across conceptual and perceptual time-scales, subsumed by a general "Janus-like" feedforward-feedback system for goal-pursuit. As an example, it is notable that the duality of "prospection" and semantic-episodic memory operating at conceptual time-scales has an analogue in perception-action cycle time, namely the interplay of anticipatory attention and working memory. Authors from all areas of psychology and neuroscience are encouraged to submit articles of any format accepted by the journal (Original Research, Methods, Hypothesis & Theory, Reviews, etc.), which might speak to questions about time and temporal phenomena at long and/or short time-scales.

Book Household and Living Arrangement Projections

Download or read book Household and Living Arrangement Projections written by Yi Zeng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an innovative demographic toolkit known as the ProFamy extended cohort-component method for the projection of household structures and living arrangements with empirical applications to the United States, the largest developed country, and China, the largest developing country. The ProFamy method uses demographic rates as inputs to project detailed distributions of household types and sizes, living arrangements of all household members, and population by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and urban/rural residence at national, sub-national, or small area levels. It can also project elderly care needs and costs, pension deficits, and household consumption. The ProFamy method presented herein has substantial merits compared to the traditional headship rate method, which is not linked to demographic rates and projects limited household types without other household members than "heads". The book consists of four parts. The first part presents the methodology, data, estimation issues, and empirical assessments. The next parts present applications in the United States (part two) and China (part three), concerning demographic, social, economic, and business research; policy analysis, including forecasting future trends of household type/size, elderly living arrangements, disability, and home-based care costs, and household consumption including housing and vehicles. The fourth part includes a user’s guide for the ProFamy software to project households, living arrangements, and home-based consumptions. This book offers an invaluable toolkit for researchers, analysts and students in academic, public and private businesses, whose work is related to levels and rates of change in households, population and consumption patterns.
