Book excerpt: In the context of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) the book offers a timely review of Map Projections. The first chapters are of foundational type. We introduce the mapping from a left Riemann manifold to a right one specified as conformal, equiaerial and equidistant, perspective and geodetic. In particular, the mapping from a Riemann manifold to a Euclidean manifold ("plane") and the design of various coordinate systems are reviewed . A speciality is the treatment of surfaces of Gaussian curvature zero. The largest part is devoted to the mapping the sphere and the ellipsoid-of-revolution to tangential plane, cylinder and cone (pseudo-cone) using the polar aspect, transverse as well as oblique aspect. Various Geodetic Mappings as well as the Datum Problem are reviewed. In the first extension we introduce optimal map projections by variational calculus for the sphere, respectively the ellipsoid generating harmonic maps. The second extension reviews alternative maps for structures , namely torus (pneu), hyperboloid (cooling tower), paraboloid (parabolic mirror), onion shape (church tower) as well as clothoid (Hight Speed Railways) used in Project Surveying. Third, we present the Datum Transformation described by the Conformal Group C10 (3) in a threedimensional Euclidean space , a ten parameter conformal transformation. It leaves infinitesimal angles and distance ratios equivariant. Numerical examples from classical and new map projections as well as twelve appendices document the Wonderful World of Map Projections.

Book The Us Budget Economic Outlook 2006 2015

Download or read book The Us Budget Economic Outlook 2006 2015 written by U. S. Congressional Budget Office and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-06-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects that if current laws and policies remained the same, the federal government would run budget deficits of $368 billion in 2005 and $295 billion in 2006. However.those estimates omit a significant amount of spending that will occur this year-and conceivably for some time in the future-for U.S. military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan and for other efforts in the war on terrorism.- Summary, The Budget and Economic Outlook: Fiscal Years 2006 to 2015The Budget and Economic Outlook presents topics related to leading economic issues including: .A review of 2004's budget outlook and the concept behind CBO's baseline projections. The importance of productivity growth for economic and budget projections as well as an overview of CBO's two-year forecast.Revenues by source and revenue projections in detail. An outlook of mandatory and discretionary spending, including net interest .Budget resolution targets vs. actual budget outcomesTHE U.S. BUDGET & ECONOMIC OUTLOOK: 2006-2015 is one of a series of reports on the state of the U.S. budget and economy that the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) issued each year. It is the requirement of Section 202(e) of the Congressional Budget Act of 1974 for the CBO to submit to the Committees on the Budget periodic reports about fiscal policy and to provide baseline projections of the federal budget. In accordance with the CBO's mandate to provide impartial analysis, the report makes no recommendations. For additional information about the Congressional Budget Office, please visit www.cbo.gov.

Book Expert Political Judgment

Download or read book Expert Political Judgment written by Philip E. Tetlock and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original publication, Expert Political Judgment by New York Times bestselling author Philip Tetlock has established itself as a contemporary classic in the literature on evaluating expert opinion. Tetlock first discusses arguments about whether the world is too complex for people to find the tools to understand political phenomena, let alone predict the future. He evaluates predictions from experts in different fields, comparing them to predictions by well-informed laity or those based on simple extrapolation from current trends. He goes on to analyze which styles of thinking are more successful in forecasting. Classifying thinking styles using Isaiah Berlin's prototypes of the fox and the hedgehog, Tetlock contends that the fox--the thinker who knows many little things, draws from an eclectic array of traditions, and is better able to improvise in response to changing events--is more successful in predicting the future than the hedgehog, who knows one big thing, toils devotedly within one tradition, and imposes formulaic solutions on ill-defined problems. He notes a perversely inverse relationship between the best scientific indicators of good judgement and the qualities that the media most prizes in pundits--the single-minded determination required to prevail in ideological combat. Clearly written and impeccably researched, the book fills a huge void in the literature on evaluating expert opinion. It will appeal across many academic disciplines as well as to corporations seeking to develop standards for judging expert decision-making. Now with a new preface in which Tetlock discusses the latest research in the field, the book explores what constitutes good judgment in predicting future events and looks at why experts are often wrong in their forecasts.

Book Prediction Learning and Games

Download or read book Prediction Learning and Games written by Nicolo Cesa-Bianchi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-13 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important text and reference for researchers and students in machine learning, game theory, statistics and information theory offers a comprehensive treatment of the problem of predicting individual sequences. Unlike standard statistical approaches to forecasting, prediction of individual sequences does not impose any probabilistic assumption on the data-generating mechanism. Yet, prediction algorithms can be constructed that work well for all possible sequences, in the sense that their performance is always nearly as good as the best forecasting strategy in a given reference class. The central theme is the model of prediction using expert advice, a general framework within which many related problems can be cast and discussed. Repeated game playing, adaptive data compression, sequential investment in the stock market, sequential pattern analysis, and several other problems are viewed as instances of the experts' framework and analyzed from a common nonstochastic standpoint that often reveals new and intriguing connections.

Book Labor Force Projections To 2016

Download or read book Labor Force Projections To 2016 written by Mitra Toossi and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The labor force will grow more slowly during the next decade; and the older labor force is projected to grow more than 5 times faster than the overall labor force, which will become ever more racially and ethnically diverse. The growth of the older labor force in the next decade will be much higher than the labor force growth of the other age groups. The civilian labor force is projected to increase by a 0.8% annual growth rate which is lower than the 1.2% annual growth rate registered during the previous 10-year period. In addition, the labor force will continue to age: the 55-years-and-older workforce is expected to grow by 46.7% over the projection period, more than 5 times the growth projected for the aggregate labor force. Charts and tables.

Book Population Dynamics and Projection Methods

Download or read book Population Dynamics and Projection Methods written by John Stillwell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the human population growth rate of the world has been declining since peaking in the early 1960s, the populations of individual countries are changing at different rates. Population dynamics at national level are partly determined by levels of fertility and mortality, but the impact of international migration is playing an increasingly important role. Moreover, internal migration plays a major part in population change at the sub-national level. This fourth volume in the series “Understanding Population Trends and Processes” is a celebration of the work of Professor Philip Rees. It contains chapters by contributors who have collaborated with Phil Rees on research or consultancy projects or as postgraduate students. Several chapters demonstrate the technical nature of population projection modelling and simulation methods while others illustrate issues relating to data availability and estimation. This book demonstrates the application of theoretical and modelling methods and addresses key issues relating to contemporary demographic patterns and trends.
