Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Project Method of Teaching This book is devoted mainly to a critical discussion of the project method of teaching. The term project has only recently made its appearance in educational terminology, but the idea back of the project is not new. It is quite probable that skillful teachers have always used the essential features of the project method. A survey of modern teaching methods in engineering, law, medicine, agriculture, as well as in the prescribed subjects of the school curriculum, shows that much effort is being expended to bridge the chasm between school tasks and activities outside the school. In other words, the project idea, as defined by the author, is attempted to some extent in all these fields. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book The Teaching of Geography Emphasizing the Project Or Active Method Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Geography Emphasizing the Project Or Active Method Classic Reprint written by Mendel E. Branom and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography, Emphasizing the Project, or Active, Method This book is the product of several years' experience by the authors in the directing of method courses in normal schools and universities. The "new geography," emphasizing interpretations as well as facts, has been heartily received. The modern spirit, however, has been imparted primarily by the geography departments of the universities, where the emphasis is placed on academic geography and the organization of geographic materials into a coherent body of knowledge. Both the content and method books of geography reflect the influence of the higher schools. The educator is not primarily interested in geography as an academic subject, but as a means of giving the child desirable experiences. He does not hesitate to overstep the boundary lines between subjects if he can give the child more befitting experiences. A practical man does not meet one situation that he calls geography and another situation that he calls history, but in the meeting of a situation he draws on any subject needed, in the proportion needed, to make an adequate interpretation. In his enthusiasm to organize educational content in accordance with the way that the world uses it, the educator has suggested the possibility of blending content subjects in unit situations under the name of social studies. The authors hold that it is possible to organize the geography course of study in such a way that the dominant viewpoint will be geographic and at the same time will permit of the interpretation of materials about life centers. Geography is primarily a study of the interacting relations of life forms and nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Student s History of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Student s History of Education Classic Reprint written by Frank Pierrepont Graves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's History of Education There is a growing conviction among those engaged in training teachers that the History of Education must justify itself. It is believed that, if this subject is to con tribute to the professional equipment of the teacher, its material must be selected with reference to his specific needs. Antiquarian interests and encyclopaedic complete ness are alluring and may in their place prove praise Worthy and valuable, but they do not in themselves supply any definite demand in the training of teachers. The greatest services that the History of Education can perform for the teacher are to impel him to analyze his problems more completely and to throw light upon the school practices with which he is himself concerned. By presenting a series of clear-cut views of past conditions, often in marked contrast to his own, it should make him conscious that the present educational situation has to a large degree been traditionally received, and it should at the same time especially help him to understand the origin and significance of current practices. In this way a study of the History of Education will disrupt the teacher's complacent acceptance of the pres ent, and will enable him to reconstruct his ideas in the light of the peculiar conditions out of which the educa tion of his times has sprung. Whenever historical records do not assist in such an analysis and synthesis of present day problems, they may be frankly dismissed from dis cassion. This conception of the subject, I have myself.
