Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hands on the Freedom Plow, fifty-two women--northern and southern, young and old, urban and rural, black, white, and Latina--share their courageous personal stories of working for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. The testimonies gathered here present a sweeping personal history of SNCC: early sit-ins, voter registration campaigns, and freedom rides; the 1963 March on Washington, the Mississippi Freedom Summer, and the movements in Alabama and Maryland; and Black Power and antiwar activism. Since the women spent time in the Deep South, many also describe risking their lives through beatings and arrests and witnessing unspeakable violence. These intense stories depict women, many very young, dealing with extreme fear and finding the remarkable strength to survive. The women in SNCC acquired new skills, experienced personal growth, sustained one another, and even had fun in the midst of serious struggle. Readers are privy to their analyses of the Movement, its tactics, strategies, and underlying philosophies. The contributors revisit central debates of the struggle including the role of nonviolence and self-defense, the role of white people in a black-led movement, and the role of women within the Movement and the society at large. Each story reveals how the struggle for social change was formed, supported, and maintained by the women who kept their "hands on the freedom plow." As the editors write in the introduction, "Though the voices are different, they all tell the same story--of women bursting out of constraints, leaving school, leaving their hometowns, meeting new people, talking into the night, laughing, going to jail, being afraid, teaching in Freedom Schools, working in the field, dancing at the Elks Hall, working the WATS line to relay horror story after horror story, telling the press, telling the story, telling the word. And making a difference in this world."

Book The Experience of Personal Freedom

Download or read book The Experience of Personal Freedom written by Randy H. Grodi and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Abstract] This psychological research project utilized the heuristic model to explore the experience of personal freedom. The heuristic model was employed due to the existential nature of the inquiry and in view of my decision to include tacit and intuitive dimensions of the research participants' experience. The study was conducted through in-depth interviews and analyses of my own and the co-researchers' experience of personal freedom. An exhaustive literature review revealed applicable theoretical and philosophical works that provided conceptual grounding for the investigation. Personal freedom had not previously been heuristically researched. The methods and procedures for gathering and analyzing data followed heuristic methods and standards. The data collected revealed nine core qualities essential to personal freedom: Acceptance of self, Acceptance of Circumstances, Choice, Non-conformity, Authenticity, Responsibility, Spirituality, Humility, and Letting Go. Individual and composite depictions, individual portraits, and a creative synthesis of the experience were constructed from analyses of the tape-recorded interviews with co-researchers. Implications of personal freedom, an outline for a future study, and limitations of my research methods and findings were summarized.

McCord argues that the old standbys of corporate HR—annual performance reviews, retention plans, employee empowerment and engagement programs—often end up being a colossal waste of time and resources. Book Embracing Your Freedom

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susie Larson
  • Publisher : Moody Publishers
  • Release : 2009-09-23
  • ISBN : 157567369X
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Embracing Your Freedom written by Susie Larson and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While our culture places great emphasis on comfort, security, control, and success, there are deeper rewards for those who take hold of God’s promises and reach out in the Name of Christ. Adventure, faith, miracles, and a deep knowledge of Jesus Christ. This is what Susie calls her readers to realize. Author/Speaker Susie Larson makes her message graspable, accessible, and doable. Her stories, scriptural devotionals, and study questions set the stage for a first-hand experience of God’s heart for personal freedom, for the plight of the suffering, and for a conviction to get involved with His work among those in need. While the book’s primary focus is on the reader’s journey into freedom, it clearly conveys our shared responsibility to “seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, [and] plead for the widow” (Isaiah 1:17, nrsv). This is God’s expectation for those who truly know Him. When we live in bondage to our fears, insecurities, shame, guilt, despair, or sinful appetites, we live self-focused lives. But when we embrace our freedom in Christ, our hearts are released from captivity and we view everything around us—our relationships, resources, responsibilities, and opportunities—as tools to bring that same freedom to those who desperately need it. This book is for the woman who wants to grow stronger in her walk of faith and who wants to gain a greater view of God’s heart for the world. And it’s to this we are called. May she be provoked, to be as free as God meant her to be. And as a result, may she become an advocate for the freedoms of others. Each chapter includes devotional insights, justice quotes, anecdotes, prayer guidance, and study/reflective questions.

Book Freedom and the Pursuit of Happiness

Download or read book Freedom and the Pursuit of Happiness written by Sebastiano Bavetta and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the relationship between different concepts of freedom and happiness. The book's authors distinguish three concepts for which an empirical measure exists: opportunity to choose (negative freedom), capability to choose (positive freedom), and autonomy to choose (autonomy freedom). They also provide a comprehensive account of the relationship between freedom and well-being by comparing channels through which freedoms affect quality of life. The book also explores whether the different conceptions of freedom complement or replace each other in the determination of the level of well-being. In so doing, the authors make freedoms a tool for policy making and are able to say which conception is the most effective for well-being, as circumstances change. The results have implications for a justification of a free society: maximizing freedoms is good for its favorable consequences upon individual well-being, a fundamental value for the judgment of human advantage.
