Download or read book Project of a New System of Arithmetic written by John W. Nystrom and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Project of a New System of Arithmetic: Weight, Measure and Coins, Proposed to Be Called the Tonal System, With Sixteen to the Base The introduction of the decimal system of weight, measure, and coins, is steadily progressing in most parts of the world, but when or wherever it is first proposed, it meets with many natural and reasonable objections. The inconvenience of the decimal arithmetic is well known, and better bases for the same have been frequently proposed, but there has not, that I am aware of, been made any earnest attempt, by proper authority, to introduce a system that would in all its bearings constitute the greatest possible simplicity and efficacy, nor to remove the principal objections to the decimal arithmetic. Questions may arise, first, what are the difficulties and objections? And secondly, how can they be removed and overcome! This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games columns in Scientific American inspired and entertained several generations of mathematicians and scientists. Gardner in his crystal-clear prose illuminated corners of mathematics, especially recreational mathematics, that most people had no idea existed. His playful spirit and inquisitive nature invite the reader into an exploration of beautiful mathematical ideas along with him. These columns were both a revelation and a gift when he wrote them; no one--before Gardner--had written about mathematics like this. They continue to be a marvel. This is the original 1971 edition and contains columns published in the magazine from 1963-1965.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many people achieve a cult following because of their writing in mathematics? Only a handful, and Martin Gardner is among the most well known and well loved. Not only did he present a notoriously difficult subject in an engaging and accessible way, but in doing so, he attracted an incredibly broad readership. His correspondents ranged from academics like Roger Penrose and John Horton Conway to artists MC Escher and Salvador Dali to writer Isaac Asimov. His "Mathematical Games" column in Scientific American ran nearly every month for 26 years and was one of the most popular in the magazine's history. Gardner would have celebrated his 100th birthday this October, and to mark the occasion we've created this eBook collection, Martin Gardner: The Magic and Mystery of Numbers. In this anthology, we strove to create a new "slice" through his wealth of material. Here, we focus on all flavors of number, from common integers and negative numbers to figurate numbers and the exotic random number, Omega, which can be described but not computed. Some of these columns are less well known than, say, his writings about flexagons, but they are no less fun. In true Gardner fashion, they leap from magic and games—as well as art, music, and literature—to flashes of deep mathematical insight. Lattice integers become a billiards challenge and surreal numbers spawn a host of related games. The "abracadabric number e," quoting French entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre, leads to spiders' webs and compounded interest. The binary Gray code inspires a poem and cracks the classic Chinese Rings puzzle. And binary numbers unlock mind-reading tricks and the Tower of Hanoi. Almost every column offers up problems for readers to solve and test their understanding—along with the answers for anyone easily frustrated. We hope that they will prove as inspirational to readers now as they did to earlier audiences.

Book Leibniz on Binary

  • Author : Lloyd Strickland
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2022-10-25

  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book Leibniz on Binary written by Lloyd Strickland and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first collection of Leibniz’s key writings on the binary system, newly translated, with many previously unpublished in any language. The polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) is known for his independent invention of the calculus in 1675. Another major—although less studied—mathematical contribution by Leibniz is his invention of binary arithmetic, the representational basis for today’s digital computing. This book offers the first collection of Leibniz’s most important writings on the binary system, all newly translated by the authors with many previously unpublished in any language. Taken together, these thirty-two texts tell the story of binary as Leibniz conceived it, from his first youthful writings on the subject to the mature development and publication of the binary system. As befits a scholarly edition, Strickland and Lewis have not only returned to Leibniz’s original manuscripts in preparing their translations, but also provided full critical apparatus. In addition to extensive annotations, each text is accompanied by a detailed introductory “headnote” that explains the context and content. Additional mathematical commentaries offer readers deep dives into Leibniz’s mathematical thinking. The texts are prefaced by a lengthy and detailed introductory essay, in which Strickland and Lewis trace Leibniz’s development of binary, place it in its historical context, and chart its posthumous influence, most notably on shaping our own computer age.
