Book excerpt: The studies of the four process categories (material removeal, addition, displacement and modification) continued along two lines: (1) Experiments to validate new process concepts were performed and experiment designs were formulated for material removal processes based on rapid oxidation, severe embrittlement, and cavitation erosion; (2) studies of fundamental principles that may play a role in future processes were continued, with emphasis on the role in future processes were continued, with emphasis on the role of diffusion and sintering in certain categories of material addition processes. Highlights of the report are the development of a quantitative measure of brittleness that will be useful in evaluating embrittlement machining schemes and initiation of quantum-mechanical studies of material behavior that will be applicable to manufacturing research. General guidelines for process synthesis are developed based on the material properties, topological characteristics of the processes, the energy transformation involved and the environmental conditions essential to the energy transfer. These characteristic features of material removal, material joining, and material displace ment processes are developed. Two general approaches to improving material removal processes are cited: the first is concerned with re ducing surface energy by environmental means, the second with modification of the geometry of the failure mechanism, so as to reduce the energy required. Material removal processes synthesis is microscopic and macroscopic aspects of relaxation and resonance in materials, cavitation, and chemical removal.
