Book Cybernetic Revolutionaries

Download or read book Cybernetic Revolutionaries written by Eden Medina and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical study of Chile's twin experiments with cybernetics and socialism, and what they tell us about the relationship of technology and politics. In Cybernetic Revolutionaries, Eden Medina tells the history of two intersecting utopian visions, one political and one technological. The first was Chile's experiment with peaceful socialist change under Salvador Allende; the second was the simultaneous attempt to build a computer system that would manage Chile's economy. Neither vision was fully realized—Allende's government ended with a violent military coup; the system, known as Project Cybersyn, was never completely implemented—but they hold lessons for today about the relationship between technology and politics. Drawing on extensive archival material and interviews, Medina examines the cybernetic system envisioned by the Chilean government—which was to feature holistic system design, decentralized management, human-computer interaction, a national telex network, near real-time control of the growing industrial sector, and modeling the behavior of dynamic systems. She also describes, and documents with photographs, the network's Star Trek-like operations room, which featured swivel chairs with armrest control panels, a wall of screens displaying data, and flashing red lights to indicate economic emergencies. Studying project Cybersyn today helps us understand not only the technological ambitions of a government in the midst of political change but also the limitations of the Chilean revolution. This history further shows how human attempts to combine the political and the technological with the goal of creating a more just society can open new technological, intellectual, and political possibilities. Technologies, Medina writes, are historical texts; when we read them we are reading history.

Book The Eden Project Free Post Apocalyptic

Download or read book The Eden Project Free Post Apocalyptic written by DP Fitzsimons and published by DP Fitzsimons. This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world had fallen. The mostly vacant cities were silent now. For those who had not been turned or consumed, remote locations proved the best chance to live a while longer before the inevitable end landed its teeth marks on their flesh or its disease in their blood. To eat or be eaten was the last imperative of the once noble species. All the accoutrements of being the most civilized of creatures had faded away and the human beast had been returned to the savagery of the primordial forest. This was the truth everywhere in the world, except one place—a small island, forgotten before and after the fall, a place where the sun yet shined down onto hopeful souls, 117 souls, the children of the Eden Project, who lived all their days until now in a great, glass dome. They were the children of light, pure blooded, uninfected, but they all knew (down to the smallest among them) that these hours of eternal incandescence were numbered. They all knew, every moment they breathed, that their destinies awaited them outside the glass, where darkness forever reigned. NIGHT WITHOUT END (Book Two of The Eden Project) now available

Download or read book Paradise Lust written by Brook Wilensky-Lanford and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “certainly weird . . . strangely wonderful . . . [and] often irresistible” search to find the real Garden of Eden (The New York Times Book Review). Where, precisely, was God’s Paradise? St. Augustine had a theory. So did medieval monks, John Calvin and Christopher Columbus. But when Darwin’s theory of evolution changed our understanding of human origins, shouldn’t the desire to put a literal Eden on the map have faded away? Not so fast. This “gloriously researched, pluckily written historical and anecdotal assay of humankind’s age-old quixotic quest for the exact location of the Biblical garden” (Elle) explores an obsession that has consumed scientists and theologians alike for centuries. To this day, the search continues, taken up by amateur explorers, clergymen, scholars, engineers and educators—romantic seekers all who started with the same simple-sounding Bible verses, only to end up at a different spot on the globe: Sri Lanka, the Seychelles, the North Pole, Mesopotamia, China, Iraq—and Ohio. Inspired by an Eden seeker in her own family, “Wilensky-Lanford approaches her subjects with respect, enthusiasm and conscientious research” (San Francisco Chronicle) as she traverses a century-spanning history provoking surprising insights into where we came from, what we did wrong, and where we go from here. And it all makes for “a lively journey” (Kirkus Reviews).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From thriller and suspense master Brett Battles comes Dream Sky, the sixth book in the continuing Project Eden thriller saga. A hush has settled over the planet. The once dominant human race is in full retreat. But man is not yet defeated. Augustine dream sky. These were Matt Hamilton's last words. Daniel Ash has no idea what they mean, but he's sure they are key to defeating Project Eden. His only hope is that he's able to figure out the secret in time. The survivors on Isabella Island are surrounded by death, and need to get off the island before the flu can claim them, too. But there are not enough boats at the resort to get everyone to safety. The only solution involves a risky trip to the mainland that may be even more dangerous than remaining on the island. In Mumbai, Sanjay's friends watch as the Project Eden survival station is abandoned. Curious, they search the facility once everyone has left. They expect to find very little, and at first they are right. But only at first. Ben Bowerman's search for his girlfriend, Martina Gable, takes him to the only place left he thinks she can be. When he gets there, he's hurled into the unexpected, where he begins to see the truth of what is really going on, and knows if he doesn't do something drastic, his days are numbered. And in an idyllic town covered by a blanket of snow, all is quiet. Except for the rotating squad of soldiers who watch and wait for a problem they believe becomes more and more unlikely as each day passes. The world, after all, is quickly depleting. But they are wrong. Eden Rising is best read after completing volumes 1-5 (Sick, Exit 9, Pale Horse, Ashes, and Eden Rising) Praise for the Project Eden Thrillers: "Sick didn't just hook me. Download or read book The Book of Eden Genesis 2 3 written by Bruce C E Fleming and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God did not curse Eve or limit woman in any way. Sadly, modern translations of Genesis 3:16 make it look like God did both. God didn't curse Adam either, but God did speak to him in a way exactly parallel to the other rebel in the Garden of Eden, the serpent-tempter. And two curses were imposed by God because of them. People have made up many myths and stories about what supposedly happened in Eden. They make it seem like God cursed the woman and that she somehow deserved it. She didn't. They make it seem like God instituted the man's bad behavior toward his wife. God didn't. The Bible tells us what really happened. And this book is all about what God really said especially in Genesis 3:16. When these chapters in Genesis are rightly understood, and we gain a true view of what God really said to the woman in Genesis 3:16, many New Testament passages can be reinvestigated. They too can be cleared away of the bias we find popping up in translations of, and commentary on, several key passages in the New Testament that look back to Genesis 2 and 3. This book is based on the episodes of Season One of The Eden Podcast (TheEdenPodcast.com).
