Book excerpt: A LOVE STORY LOST IN PRIDE & PREJUDICE... It is high summer when Ellie Bentley joins an archaeological dig at Jane Austen's childhood home. She's always had a talent for 'seeing' into the past and is not easily disturbed by her encounters with Mr Darcy's ghost at the house where she's staying. When Ellie travels into the past she discovers exactly what happened whilst Jane danced her way through the snowy winter of 1796. As Steventon Rectory and all its characters come to life, Ellie discovers the true love story lost in Pride and Prejudice - a tale which has its own consequences for her future destiny, changing her life beyond imagination.

Book excerpt: Presented at the International Association of Hydrogeologists Dijon Symposium, this book contains 43 selected papers, grouped into six topics, that address the following issues: large aquifers, resource assessment; large aquifers, water salinity and evolution; karstic and carbonate aquifer systems; geothermal aquifer systems; aquifer contamination studies; and aquifer monitoring systems and management. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darcy's Law, the volume includes a summary of Darcy's life and his contribution to science, and five invited contributions on modern methods to estimate the hydraulic conductivity of aquifers.
Download or read book Fluid Flow in the Subsurface written by Hui-Hai Liu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic attempt to generalize several fundamental physical laws related to subsurface fluid flow that are important for a number of contemporary applications in the areas of hydrogeology, reservoir engineering and rock mechanics. It also covers the history of discovering these physical laws, their respective scope of validity, and their generalizations or extensions. The physical laws discussed include Darcy’s law, Darcy-Buckingham law and Hooke’s law. Darcy’s law is the fundamental law for subsurface fluid flow. For low-permeability media, it is not always adequate because of the strong fluid–solid interaction. Though the Darcy-Buckingham law is often used for modeling subsurface multiphase flow, it is only valid under the local equilibrium condition. This condition does not hold in many cases, especially when fingering flow occurs. It is well known that subsurface fluid flow is coupled with mechanical deformation of subsurface media; in some applications, this coupling can play a dominant role. The continuum-scale elastic deformation of natural rock, however, does not always follow the traditional form of Hooke’s law. The book also presents applications of the proposed generalizations of the physical laws to several important engineering projects.

Download or read book Aquifer Systems Management written by Laurence Chery and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2007-09-15 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2050, the demand for water to sustain world agriculture will increase by seventy-five per cent in order to feed an estimated nine billion inhabitants. Increased amounts of water will be required for irrigation and for industrial and domestic use. Natural ecosystems will be threatened by the expansion of agricultural land and by a reduction in water availability, while climate change will exacerbate the situation. Management of available resources, particularly groundwater, will become more critical and aquifers will need to be managed for the benefit of all. These selected papers were first presented at the International Association of Hydrogeologists, Dijon 2006, and are divided into six themes: large aquifers, resource assessment; large aquifers, water salinity and evolution; karstic and carbonate aquifer systems; geothermal aquifer systems; aquifer contamination studies and aquifer monitoring systems and management. The volume also includes a short biography of Henry Darcy and illustrates his contribution to science. Five invited contributions describe modern methods for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of aquifers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you heard? Mr. Darcy is back ... After a long and mysterious absence, Mr. Darcy has returned to Pemberley from the Far East. He is but a shell of the man who disappeared into the night after the death of his beloved Elizabeth three years ago. The cloud of grief and self-pity that hovers over him cannot even be dispelled by his own young daughter Eliza, the last heir to his and Elizabeth's union, whom he left in the care of his sister that terrible night. The rumors in town go unanswered as the pale and withdrawn Darcy hides away, resisting all attempts to reintegrate him into society. His sister, however, is not so easily swayed and is determined to find him a wife (and Eliza a mother) of good repute ... and she has just the woman in mind. Set about four years after the events of Pride and Prejudice, Anja Bligh's Mr. Darcy's Second Chance is a warm, fascinating account of a love found for one of the most beloved characters of Victorian romance.

Book excerpt: Water is the most important resource on Earth. We drink it, wash with it, clean with it, and even study it. Without water, nothing could exist. Scientists who study water are called hydrologists. They make sure our water is clean and safe, design systems to move and collect water, and know where to find fresh sources of water. For more information on water, read Inside the Water Cycle, another book in the Mission: Science series.
Download or read book Engendering Realism and Postmodernism written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume assembles critical essays on, and excerpts from, works of contemporary women writers in Britain. Its focus is the interaction of aesthetic play and ethical commitment in the fictional work of women writers whose interest in testing and transgressing textual boundaries is rooted in a specific awareness of a gendered multicultural reality. This position calls for a distinctly critical impetus of their writing involving the interaction of the political and the literary as expressed in innovative combinations of realist and postmodern techniques in works by A. S. Byatt, Maureen Duffy, Zoe Fairbairns, Eva Figes, Penelope Lively, Sara Maitland, Suniti Namjoshi, Ravinder Randhawa, Joan Riley, Michele Roberts, Emma Tennant, Fay Weldon, Jeanette Winterson. All contributions to this volume address aspects of these writers' positions and techniques with a clear focus on their interest in transgressing boundaries of genre, gender and (post)colonial identity. The special quality of these interpretations, first given in the presence of writers at a symposium in Potsdam, derives from the creative and prosperous interactions between authors and critics. The volume concludes with excerpts from the works of the participating writers which exemplify the range of concrete concerns and technical accomplisments discussed in the essays. They are taken from fictional works by Debjani Chatterjee, Maureen Duffy, Zoe Fairbairns, Eva Figes, Sara Maitland, and Ravinder Randhawa. They also include the creative interactions of Suniti Namjoshi and Gillian Hanscombe in their joint writing and Paul Magrs' critical engagement with Sara Maitland.
