Book excerpt: Project Pre-SCHOONER consisted of four 20-ton nitromethane cratering detonations conducted by the United States Army Engineer Nuclear Crate ring Group as part of the joint Atomic Energy Commission-Corps of Engineers nuclear excavation research program. The experiment was conducted in February 1964 in the basalt of Buck- board Mesa at the Nevada Test Site. High speed photography and target markers were used to measure ground surface motions produced by each of the four detonations. Analysis of the surface motion data indicated that spalling was the principle crater-producing mechanism. The three detonations which produced apparent craters did, however, show varying amounts of second phase surface accelerations. Surface ground zero spall velocities ranged from 100 fps for the detonation at a 66-foot burial 1/3 depth (scaled depth of 236 ft/kt) to 170 fps for the detonation at 1/3 a 42-foot burial depth (scaled depth of 150 ft/kt).

Book excerpt: A comprehensive geologic and engineering investigation was undertaken on Buckboard Mesa at the four sites selected for Project Pre-Schooner, a series of chemical explosive experiments conducted in dry basalt. This report covers the results of the preshot geologic and engineering investigation. Subsurface conditions were determined from four vertical borings at each site: One centrally located 6-inch-diameter boring to a depth of 80 feet and three satellite NX core holes of variable depths at the ends of 35-foot radials that were spaced 120 degrees apart. The sites are blanketed by a thin soil cover of rather uniform thickness, ranging from 2 to 4 feet at the four sites, overlying a basalt cap approximately 200 feet thick. The uppermost portion of this basalt cap is composed of vesicular basalt 25 to 50 feet thick which grades into underlying dense basalt 100 to 150 feet thick. The basalt is immediately underlain by 0 to 20 feet of ash or cinder beds.

Book excerpt: Project DANNY BOY was an excavation project for the PLOWSHARE Program and consisted of the detonation of a low-yield nuclear device in the basalt mesa in Area 18 at the Nevada Test Site of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. The primary purpose in the tests was to give data on: amount, distribution, and decay of radioactivity released by a nuclear cratering detonation buried near optimum depth-of-burst in a hard medium, cratering capability of nuclear explosions in a hard, dry, noncarbonate medium such as basalt, and character of seismic shock and air-blast from a nuclear detonation near optimum depth-of-burst in basalt. The tests presented in the report were conducted to both furnish information as to the physical properties of the in-place material for use in designing special grout mixtures to be used in the embedment of various types of instruments in the site area and also to furnish information as to the characteristics of the in-place material prior to shot time. Book excerpt: In Project BUCKBOARD, high-explosive charges were detonated in basalt to determine their earth-moving ability in this type of formation. One shot (shot 12), a 40,000-lb charge of spherically shaped TNT placed 43 ft below ground surface in an 11-ft-diameter cavity at the bottom of a 4-ft-diameter drilled hole, was to be used for ground-motion studies. The Waterways Experiment Station determined pertinent physical properties of the basalt and developed a grout mixture with matching properties for use in grouting earth-motion measuring instruments into eight holes drilled near shot 12; grouted the instrument holes; and from specimens of the field-mixed grout determined its physical properties at shot time. The grout required a high water content to be pumpable; consequently its compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity were less than desired. (Author).
