Book excerpt: Loving your body is hard to do. Project Body Love is the story of my quest to find acceptance, respect, and maybe even love for my body after spending a lifetime counting calories and drops of sweat. What followed was a two-year series of experiments that had me mining the depths of my past, dismantling the effects of Diet Culture on my self-worth, taking up bellydancing, posing for nude photographs, and other daring feats of self-exploration. Far from being a shiny tale of self-actualization, Project Body Love explores the complexity of being a fat person in a thin-obsessed world, and concludes with an entirely new perspective on the elusive body love - one that was surprising, even to me. This is my story, and so much of it is also the story of millions of other women. And so. I wrote this for every woman who has spent too much time trying to make herself small. I wrote it for every woman who wants to love her body, but can't figure out how. I wrote this for a world that needs its women committed to revolution and sovereignty and joy, not eating more salad.

Book The Honest Body Project

Download or read book The Honest Body Project written by Natalie McCain and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only 4 percent of women around the world consider themselves to be beautiful, according to research done by Dove, and twenty million women suffer from significant eating disorders at some point in their life—The Honest Body Project was created to combat this tragic problem of poor body image in our society. Founded by photographer Natalie McCain, this project is opening the eyes of women around the world and helping them to see the beauty both outside and inside of themselves. It is a collection of black and white portraits and stories, raw and untouched, from hundreds of women who have bared their hearts and souls to be a part of the project. Natalie tastefully photographs the women in their underwear, showing off their natural shapes and “imperfections.” There is no editing done after the fact, and the natural beauty of these women—from all backgrounds and walks of life—shines through the lens. Together, they create a beautiful, honest picture of both motherhood and what it means to be a woman. Topics include body image issues, breast cancer, depression (postpartum and otherwise), anxiety, bottle feeding versus breast feeding, aging, and more. The Honest Body Project is a breath of fresh air, breaking down walls and helping women learn that they are not alone in their hardships. It wants to help women everywhere contribute to a better world, and to learn to love themselves and appreciate their bodies for what they are: perfectly imperfect. It is time to celebrate the true form of women.

Download or read book The Body Project written by Eric Stice and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-12 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ours is a society in which thinness, particularly in women, is idealized, even at the cost of health. Adolescent girls and young women are especially at risk of developing eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. The need for wide-spread prevention among at-risk populations is paramount, as these disorders are often difficult to treat and can contribute to a range of physical and mental health problems. Studies have found that a cognitive dissonance-based intervention significantly outperforms other intervention programs and is successful in preventing onset of eating disorders. This facilitator guide outlines a two part group intervention program for adolescent and college-aged girls at risk of developing eating disorders. In the first part of the program, participants critique the thin-ideal through discussion, role-playing, and written exercises. Participants learn skills that increase body satisfaction, decrease unhealthy weight control behaviors, and prevent eating disorder symptoms. The second part of the intervention is designed to help participants make gradual and permanent lifestyle changes to achieve a healthy body weight. It teaches how to eat for energy balance, make healthy food choices, and incorporate physical exercise into a daily routine. This group therapy program is based on 16 years of research and has been completed by over 1000 adolescent girls and young women. It can be effectively delivered by real world providers, such as school counselors, nurses, and teachers. This facilitator guide provides all the information needed to successfully implement the program, including explanation of Cognitive Dissonance theory, session outlines complete with exercises, and recommendations on how to train group leaders and recruit participants.

Book excerpt: The award-winning author of Fasting Girls explores what teenage girls have lost in this new world of freedom and consumerism—a world in which the body is their primary project. "Fascinating ... riveting ... Women and girls should read this fine book together." —The New York Times Book Review A hundred years ago, women were lacing themselves into corsets and teaching their daughters to do the same. The ideal of the day, however, was inner beauty: a focus on good deeds and a pure heart. Today American women have more social choices and personal freedom than ever before. But fifty-three percent of our girls are dissatisfied with their bodies by the age of thirteen, and many begin a pattern of weight obsession and dieting as early as eight or nine. Why? In The Body Project, historian Joan Jacobs Brumberg answers this question, drawing on diary excerpts and media images from 1830 to the present. Tracing girls' attitudes toward topics ranging from breast size and menstruation to hair, clothing, and cosmetics, she exposes the shift from the Victorian concern with character to our modern focus on outward appearance—in particular, the desire to be model-thin and sexy. Compassionate, insightful, and gracefully written, The Body Project explores the gains and losses adolescent girls have inherited since they shed the corset and the ideal of virginity for a new world of sexual freedom and consumerism—a world in which the body is their primary project.

Download or read book Body Stories written by Jill Andrews and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body stories capture a nuanced, interconnected, interactive, and complex telling of our understanding, perception, and experience of and through our bodies. Plenty has been published on body image but image suggests a static fixed body, unmitigated through our social interactions and varying times and spaces. This book is not a "how-to" guide for fat confidence. It's not a compendium of fat suffering. It's simply a collection of narratives about what it's like to survive in a weight-hating world. It resists the ways that marginalized bodies are being written and researched and put into other people's ideas about our existence. The stories in this book are celebratory and are painful. They look at intersections of race and queerness; they destabilize womanhood by presenting a range of possible female embodiments. They explore issues of disability and madness. The full range of possibilities that are collected here give a picture of what it means to live in a society with strong and powerful messages about size, about normalcy, about what a moral and healthy life and body look like. This book is a snapshot of its place and time, but these stories remind us that we're here to stay. The body stories will change but we will keep owning our own narratives. While story, especially written by women, is often seen as outside the academic canon, these stories, these creative offerings, are theory, are research, and are activism. They are nothing less than the blueprint for liberation. Writing about fat and about bodies outside of medicalized narratives, without ignoring the impact of race, sexuality, class, ability, gender, fashion, appearance, and beyond, is radical and rigorous. It is impossible to think about the future without wishing for liberation. Liberation can come in many forms. It can mean an awareness, the ability to confront. The stories in this book display the ways that liberation isn't a finish line or a thing we can complete—rather it is a million small actio

Book Body Love A Companion Journal to The Invitation

Download or read book Body Love A Companion Journal to The Invitation written by Christine Marie Mason and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journal pages contain a checklist of suggestions on how to show your body love on a daily basis. There are also blank boxes for you to write in your answers. You might add other boxes for other actions and rituals--like "doing my physical therapy exercises," or even highly targeted interventions like "massaging the scar tissue on my knee." It's our perspective that humans are incarnate spirits, woven of consciousness and energy. While we have a permanent consciousness (or "soul") that isn't anchored to the body, we are living in a body. Our bodies' health responds to our thoughts, as well as to the thoughts of the collective culture. When those thoughts are negative, they can limit our freedom and happiness. Those beliefs can be unwound. Body Love Journaling, and the suggested self-care practices in the checklists, are designed to support a reintegration: a restitching together of the body, mind, and spirit. In addition to these exercises, questions are sprinkled throughout the book. They were created to help you evoke and examine the cultural beliefs that you've inherited about your body. They are questions about sex, shape, size, function, illness, and aging. About who your body belongs to, and who can make decisions about it. About what it can eat or drink or ingest. About what medical procedures are allowed and disallowed--even about how your body should be dressed. We ask things like: "Is your body here to please others?" "How is a body's quality related to a person's worth?" Our hope is that, upon examination, there are some beliefs you might like to leave behind forever!
