Book excerpt: Thinking creatively and critically, demonstrating effective problem-solving skills, and communicating powerfully and compellingly to a wide range of audiences, are undoubtedly some of the most important skills necessary for success in our global society. The purpose of this study is to explore the connection between the development of students' creativity and problem-solving skills to academic achievement. This study examines schools that emphasize the development of students' problem-solving skills by employing project-based learning (PBL) as a core method of instruction, and its impact on students' academic achievement in English Language Arts and in mathematics. This study also examines the impact of the different methods of instruction on the school environment, which can be one of the most important factors affecting student learning.The target population for this quantitative study are 4th and 8th grade students in an urban public-school system receiving instruction, either primarily through a traditional method of instruction or through instruction employing the project-based learning method. In the study, the results of The New York State Grade 4 and Grade 8 English Language Arts Test and the New York State Mathematics Test, reflecting students' academic achievement, from all 50 elementary schools (19 PBL, 31 traditional) and 22 middle schools (12 PBL, 10 traditional) in two NYC districts were analyzed. Findings from this study revealed that there were statistically significant differences on both the NYS ELA Test and the NYS Math Test between the two groups (PBL vs. traditional) for both 4th grade and 8th grade students. To examine the impact of the different instructional approaches on the school environment, results of the NYC School Survey data on subareas of Rigorous Instruction and School Environment were analyzed. Findings from this analysis revealed that there was a statistically significant correlation between the instructional approach employed and the Quality of Student Discussion. Moreover, there was statistically significant correlation between the instructional approach employed and Supportive Environment of High Expectations. The results from this study provides an exciting illustration of a strong positive correlation between PBL, an instruction approach that focuses on the development of students' creativity and problem-solving skills, and academic achievement.

Among them have been issues related to population density; racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity; poverty; racism (individual and institutional); and funding levels. Although urban educators have been addressing these issues for decades, placing them under the umbrella of "urban education" and treating them as a specific area of practice and inquiry is relatively recent. Despite the wide adoption of the term a consensus about its meaning exists at only the broadest of levels. In short, urban education remains an ill-defined concept. This comprehensive volume addresses this definitional challenge and provides a 3-part conceptual model in which the achievement of equity for all -- regardless of race, gender, or ethnicity – is an ideal that is central to urban education. The model also posits that effective urban education requires attention to the three central issues that confronts all education systems (a) accountability of individuals and the institutions in which they work, (b) leadership, which occurs in multiple ways and at multiple levels, and (c) learning, which is the raison d'être of education. Just as a three-legged stool would fall if any one leg were weak or missing, each of these areas is essential to effective urban education and affects the others.

Little has been written about how researchers of urban schools and their constituencies effectively navigate these complex elements, design a culturally sensitive and responsive project, and acquire meaningful data. What are some of the critically important issues a researcher should consider when working with urban schools? What should be a researcher's commitment to the urban communities in which they conduct research? How can a researcher develop a trusting relationship in an environment justifiably distrustful of outsiders? These and other inquiries shape the contours of this edited volume. As educators and policy makers take a closer examination at urban schools and their successes, research of these unique settings assumes a more prominent role. For academics, both novice and experienced, establishing and maintaining rapport within these environments often require greater attention than qualitative or quantitative research books accord. Chapters provide a definition of student voice, context for public schooling in the United States, and introduce a framework for including student voice in school renewal processes. Examples guide readers to implementation of the framework to include student voices in diverse educational settings. Authentic voices of approximately 175 students interviewed by the authors express what it is that they really want from public schools and how pre K-12 educators can provide a structure for ongoing student participation in governance and the work of the school. The existing literature explores student characteristics such as poverty, cultural diversity, and what the experts believe students need public schools to provide. Within the research, urban public schools and technical reform are often explored and examined separately from conversations about what students want from schools, excluding opportunities for their voices and diverse perspectives to be heard. Listening to students describe instances of bullying or teachers’ low academic expectations provides educators with opportunities to address issues that impede student learning. The uniqueness of this framework for including student voice is that it provides multiple opportunities for students in any grade level to tell us what it is they want from public schools, and to make meaningful and lasting contributions to school renewal efforts.
