Book Problems in Heat Light and Sound Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems in Heat Light and Sound Classic Reprint written by Robert Wallace Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Heat, Light, and Sound This book is issued mainly as a supplement to Matriculation Physics: Heat, Light, and Sound, and is not therefore intended to be complete in itself. It is the general experience of Science-teachers that students require a fuller explanation of the mathematical difficulties involved in this subject and far more examples for practice than it is advisable to include within the limits of an ordinary text-book, and it is hoped that this book will be found to provide the necessary mathematical training. Some of the sections and examples are, however, above the standard required for London Matriculation, and these are indicated by an asterisk. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Logic of Modern Physics None of the previous essays have consciously or immediately affected the details of this; in fact I have not read any of them within several years. If pas sages here recall passages already written, it is be cause the ideas have been assimilated and the precise origin forgotten; it is probably worth while to let such passages stand without revision, because such ideas gain in plausibility through having been found acceptable to independent thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Physics: From the Positive Philosophy of Auguste Comte The misfortune Of our actual state is that the two ideas are set up in radical Opposition to each other - the retrograde Spirit having directed all efforts-ih favor of Order, and anarchical doctrine hav ing arrogated to itself the charge Of Social Progress; and, in this state of things, the reproaches exchanged between the respective parties are only too well merited by both. In this vicious circle is society new confined and the only issue from it is by the undispu ted preponderance Of a doctrine equally progressive and hierarchi cal. The Observations which I have to make On this subject are applicable to all European societies, which have, in fact, all under gone a common disorganization, though in different degrees, and with various modifications, and which can not be separately reergam izod, however they may be for a time restrained; but I shall keep the French nation chiefly in view, not only because the revolution ary state has been most conspicuous in them, but because they are, in all important respects, better prepared, in Spite Of appearances, than any other, for a true reorganization. Book Disciplinary Discourses Michigan Classics Ed

Download or read book Disciplinary Discourses Michigan Classics Ed written by Ken Hyland and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2004-07-22 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do engineers "report" while philosophers "argue" and biologists "describe"? In the Michigan Classics Edition of Disciplinary Discourses: Social Interactions in AcademicWriting, Ken Hyland examines the relationships between the cultures of academic communities and their unique discourses. Drawing on discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and the voices of professional insiders, Ken Hyland explores how academics use language to organize their professional lives, carry out intellectual tasks, and reach agreement on what will count as knowledge. In addition, Disciplinary Discourses presents a useful framework for understanding the interactions between writers and their readers in published academic writing. From this framework, Hyland provides practical teaching suggestions and points out opportunities for further research within the subject area. As issues of linguistic and rhetorical expression of disciplinary conventions are becoming more central to teachers, students, and researchers, the careful analysis and straightforward style of Disciplinary Discourses make it a remarkable asset. The Michigan Classics Edition features a new preface by the author and a new foreword by John M. Swales.

Book Thinking Space Advancing Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elena Fell
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2015-09-04
  • ISBN : 1443882119
  • Pages : 145 pages

Download or read book Thinking Space Advancing Art written by Elena Fell and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing art theory is obsessed by theories of spectatorship based on concepts of signification derived from language. This book shows the weakness of such a perspective, and, as an alternative, argues that individual aesthetic transformations of pictorial structure change one’s experience of space. In addition, it proves that this transformation is an ongoing process; pictorial art is progressively articulated through historical development, and is, therefore able to increase its cognitive and aesthetic scope. To support such a perspective, the book brings together ideas from Ernst Cassirer and Paul Crowther. Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms offers a profound way of understanding historical transformations in our experience of space, and Crowther’s work on imagination and aesthetics shows how this can be extended to pictorial space and the uniqueness of pictorial art. By combining the two approaches, it is demonstrated how pictorial art extends our basic involvement in, and cognition of, space, and provides it with a special kind of aesthetic meaning.
