Book excerpt: Greetings! My name is Ms. Lanning, and I have personally developed and implemented this 4 square math model in my classroom. I can attest that this systematic approach is the greatest contribution to my student's understanding of math concepts and number sense. 4 Square Math is a research based spiral review of math skills that builds in depth and complexity. All material is CCSS aligned for Kindergarten Mathematics. Students begin the 4 square progression with identifying and practicing number recognition, and build to comparing quantities, composing and decomposing equations, and identifying flat and solid shapes. The implementation of 4-square in my classroom has created flexible thinking and encouraged organic math conversations. The inclusion of a pre and post assessment will support the identification of areas of strength and need. Written in an easy to understand format, this resource will boost math comprehension in the classroom for teachers who are looking for a math supplement, or at home for parents wanting to increase their child's math understanding.

Book The Culture of the Mathematics Classroom

Download or read book The Culture of the Mathematics Classroom written by Falk Seeger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-13 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culture of the mathematics classroom is becoming an increasingly salient topic of discussion in mathematics education. Studying and changing what happens in the classroom allows researchers and educators to recognize the social character of mathematical pedagogy and the relationship between the classroom and culture at large. This volume is divided into three sections, reporting findings gained in both research and practice. The first part presents several attempts to change classroom culture by focusing on the education of mathematics teachers and on teacher-researcher collaboration. The second section shifts to the interactive processes of the mathematics classroom and to the communal nature of learning. The third section discusses the means of constructing, filtering, and establishing mathematical knowledge that are characteristic of classroom culture. This internationally relevant volume will be of particular interest to educators and educational researchers.

Book The Philosophy of Mathematics Education

Download or read book The Philosophy of Mathematics Education written by Paul Ernest and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many agree that all teaching rests on a theory of knowledge, there has been no in-depth exploration of the implications of the philosophy of mathematics for education. This is Paul Ernest's aim. Building on the work of Lakatos and Wittgenstein it challenges the prevalent notion that mathematical knowledge is certain, absolute and neutral, and offers instead an account of mathematics as a social construction. This has profound educational implications for social issues, including gender, race and multiculturalism; for pedagogy, including investigations and problem solving; and challenges hierarchical views of mathematics, learning and ability. Beyond this, the book offers a well-grounded model of five educational ideologies, each with its own epistemology, values, aims and social group of adherents. An analysis of the impact of these groups on the National Curriculum results in a powerful critique, revealing the questionable assumptions, values and interests upon which it rests. The book finishes on an optimistic note, arguing that pedagogy, left unspecified by the National Curriculum, is the way to achieve the radical aims of educating confident problem posers and solvers who are able to critically evaluate the social uses of mathematics.
