Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progressive Course in Spelling, Vol. 1 IN recent years the study of English has received more attention in high schools and colleges than ever before. In some public schools, however, there has been a tendency to neglect or slight such fundamental phases of English work as spelling and pronunciation by making them simply inci dental to other studies. As a result, business men who em ploy pupils from the grammar-school grades find many poorly equipped in spelling, and high-school instructors complain that many students, for the same cause, are not well prepared for their work. The Progressive Course in Spelling has been prepared with the hope that its use would awaken an interest in and encourage the study of words. Attention is invited to the grading and grouping of its contents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Lessons in English Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lessons in English Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Arthur Lee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in English, Vol. 1 The vogue of the Reed and Kellogg series of textbooks in language and grammar, extending over more than a generation, is one of the remarkable facts in the history of American school texts. The continuing popularity of the series and its immense sales prove that the books have an amazing vitality and adaptability. Teachers and pupils pay them the high tribute of satisfaction and confidence. With the rearrangement and enrichment of the elementary course in English, there came a time when many teachers felt that the essential soundness of the Reed and Kellogg series and its power of interesting and enlightening should be systematically adapted to present practices and needs. New methods and new programs of education required some eliminations and the additions of whatever of value has been established by the enthusiastic attention to English teaching in the last two decades. At the same time, it was obviously desirable to retain all those merits of the books which have helped hundreds of thousands of students to a better grasp of our language. It is in the teaching of composition that the greatest advances in Elementary English instruction have been made in recent years. The increasing use of literature, both prose and poetry, not only as models but as a means of stirring the imagination and freeing tongue and pen, is reflected in this revision. The use of pictures, the relation of expression work to life, the harmonizing of the book problems with the child's world, are here emphasized. It has not been forgotten, however, that every good text in this field must be in large measure a drill book. Download or read book Modern English Vol 1 written by Henry Pendexter Emerson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern English, Vol. 1: Elementary Lessons in English The two books of the Modern English Course are closely related, not only in a common purpose to arouse interest in the correct use of the English of to-day, but in the means by which this purpose is to be attained. Both books aim to make pupils able to express their own thoughts with freedom and satisfaction, to understand with ease the thoughts of others, and to appreciate when such thoughts are expressed with power, beauty, or grace. Instead of relying upon technical grammar to mold the daily speech of children, emphasis is laid upon practice in speaking, reading, interpreting, and writing under the guidance of the teacher, who should have a deep interest in the language and be master of its forms and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progressive Course in Reading, Vol. 1: Fourth Book; Part I; Information Literature Oral Expression The ability to cognize printed symbols lies at the very foundation of the ability to read either silently or orally. Therefore, the first four books of The Progressive Course in Reading provide for the systematic study of each word used, both singly and in its relations to other words. For this purpose, each printed symbol is registered in connection with the lesson in which it first occurs, and numerous special exercises familiarize the pupil with the literal and phonetic analogies of our language, and so cultivate his power of translating the printed symbol into the spoken word. Information, Literature, Oral Expression IN the preparation of The Progressive Course in Readin g, the compilers have kept steadily in view certain results which, in their judgment, should be aimed at by every teacher of reading, viz.: com mand of the art of reading, both silent and oral, a love for the best reading material, and the establishment of the reading habit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Lessons, Vol. 1 Each week's work contains four daily exercises in com position and one in the application of some of the Simpler principles and forms of the English language. The authors are indebted to the late Dr. E. E. White for the suggestion of this grouping, his idea being to keep the child on one line of work until a good degree of proficiency is attained. The most effective school work in composition is done by inciting pupils to speak and to write with the utmost freedom, without hampering them in the beginning with rules. The composition exercises given are not intended to teach reading, natural history, or spelling, but if pos sible to induce the pupil to tell or to write something. Book Lessons in the Speaking and Writing of English Vol 1

Download or read book Lessons in the Speaking and Writing of English Vol 1 written by John M. Manly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in the Speaking, and Writing of English, Vol. 1: Book One Language Lessons The study of English is of supreme importance to the people of the United States. With no other subject in the curriculum is the national well-being so intimately connected. The very existence of the republic depends in no small measure upon the possession and use of a language that carries the same meaning clearly and unequivocally to every citizen, of whatever race or traditions. This would be true even if language were merely an instrument of communication which left unchanged the mind and character of its user. But, as everyone knows, no language can be used habitually without modifying profoundly the forms of thought, the knowledge, the beliefs, the traditions, the ideals, and the character of anyone who uses it. The English language is therefore the most potent single force now transforming our heterogeneous population into a homogeneous and unified people. But this is not all. Language, not as an instrument of use, but as an object of study, is unsurpassed for the development of the thinking powers. True of all languages, this is especially true of English, the whole organization and meaning of which exercise the logical and rational faculties. Whatever may be the case with other languages, English cannot be studied as a purely formal discipline. The content is of greater importance than the form; and the content of language is as varied as human life and almost as educative. It is desirable, therefore, that English should be taught in our schools not only in such ways as will provide a uniform in strument of clear and exact communication, but also in such ways as will cultivate the power of clear and exact thinking, and establish noble ideals of life and character. Success in this arduous but inspiring task lies in the hands of the teachers of our common schools and of those who have the power to lighten or make heavy their task by providing or with holding the proper conditions and means of labor.
