Book Understanding Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Understanding Teaching and Learning written by Baljit Kaur and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • How do children, individually and collectively, make meanings of their learning experiences? • How can teachers become aware of children’s meaning making on an ongoing basis? • Is it possible and useful to create an integrated theory of student learning? • How can classroom research enhance critical understandings of the situated nature of learning and teaching, while taking into account the systemic and educational policy contexts? • How do differences, such as class, race, culture, gender and sexualities, interact with student learning? • How can teachers respond effectively to the realities of today’s diverse classrooms? • What are the current and emerging issues in classroom research? These are just some of the questions this book grapples with. It pays tribute to Professor Graham Nuthall’s (1935-2004) research contributions - a pioneering and internationally renowned classroom researcher of teaching and learning from New Zealand. It has been written by emerging and experienced classroom researchers from several countries as part of a project aimed at building on and extending Nuthall’s research and promoting the conducting, teaching and supervision of classroom research. The authors engage critically with theoretical, methodological and pedagogical possibilities of their research using Nuthall’s work as a springboard. As a result, all authors make links between theory and practice. Further, several leading international researchers contribute comments on future directions for classroom research and its relevance for teaching and learning. Understanding teaching and Learning: Classroom Research Revisited would be of interest to practicing or prospective teachers and teacher educators, as well as scholars and students of teaching and learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that the faith in educational markets is misplaced. Throughout the English speaking world and now Western Europe and parts of East Asia parental choice and educational markets are being seen by politicians and policy advisors as the panacea to problems of low educational standards and social exclusion. This book is the first to systematically test the key assumptions underlying the faith in markets by linking an analysis of parental choice to flows of students between schools and their impact on school effectiveness. The results of this study suggest that the ability to realize choices is dependent on social class, gender and ethnicity and that this can have a negative impact on some schools' performance. Rather than raising standards the impact of markets is to polarise them, leading to an impoverished education for many students. This important book will be vital reading for students of educational policy, sociology of education and school effectiveness and improvement, educational researchers, academics and policymakers.

Book Data Culture and the Organisation of Teachers Work

Download or read book Data Culture and the Organisation of Teachers Work written by Nerida Spina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-31 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data Culture and the Organisation of Teachers’ Work provides an in-depth look at how the political and media scrutiny of teachers, pupils and schools now organises teaching and learning. Spina also examines how educational data is used in schools, and where it fails to take account of the everyday experiences of school leaders, teachers and students. Drawing on primary research, and discussing practice in relation to the National Assessment Programme: Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), this book discusses the strengths and weaknesses of a data-driven approach, the restrictions this can impose and how to navigate them as a teacher. Ideal for scholars and postgraduate students of education, this book provides a comprehensive institutional, ethnographic look into the daily lived experiences of teachers, and the effects of standardised testing.

  • Pages : 426 pages

Download or read book Educational Curricula written by Jennifer N. Casey and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In formal education, a curriculum (plural curricula) is the set of courses, and their content, offered at a school or university. As an idea, curriculum stems from the Latin word for race course, referring to the course of deeds and experiences through which children grow and mature in becoming adults. Crucial to the curriculum is the definition of the course objectives that usually are expressed as learning outcomes and normally include the program's assessment strategy. These outcomes and assessments are grouped as units (or modules), and, therefore, the curriculum comprises a collection of such units, each, in turn, comprising a specialised, specific part of the curriculum. So, a typical curriculum includes communications, numeracy, information technology, and social skills units, with specific, specialised teaching of each. This book presents research on educational curricula from around the world.

Book Developing Teachers Assessment Capacity

Download or read book Developing Teachers Assessment Capacity written by Christopher DeLuca and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the academic benefits of assessment-driven teaching, and the growing accountability context of educational systems around the world, there is a rapidly developing need to educate teachers in effectively using assessments to promote, monitor, and report on student learning. However, assessment has historically been a neglected area in teacher education programmes, and empirical research has consistently shown assessment as an area of challenge for many teachers. While there is an increased focus across teacher education and professional literature on enhancing the assessment capacity of educators, there remains little empirical research on innovative and data-based strategies to effectively achieve this goal. The purpose of this text is to consolidate existing research on assessment education and to provoke innovative and effective approaches to educating teachers and teachers-in-training about assessment. Given the dearth of relevant research, this text also considers the matter of retention and extension of initial assessment learning into teaching careers. Combined, the articles in this text provide a foundation for novel thinking about developing teachers’ assessment capacity from pre-service to in-service contexts. This book was originally published as a special issue of Assessment in Education.

Book International Handbook of Reading Education

Download or read book International Handbook of Reading Education written by Betty J. Eller and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1992-07-27 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As major political and social changes continue to sweep through the countries of the world, and more and more nations move toward forms of social democracy, the importance of being able to read has taken on a new urgency. The burden of government, commerce, education, and social welfare is moving increasingly toward the individual, and with it the need to turn basic reading skills into the sophisticated ability to analyze, comprehend, and debate the whole world of language in front of him. This book offers an opportunity to see how the process of learning to read is being handled in a broad cross-section of countries in the world, representing the First, Second, and Third Worlds. Each of the twenty-six country surveys has been written by an international scholar indigenous to that land and follows the same basic pattern in examining reading education. Following a brief introduction to the nation and its particular educational characteristics, ten reading-associated factors are fully discussed and analyzed. These factors include the language of the country in question, its reading policy, the goals of reading, illiteracy, issues pertaining to the rate and diagnosis of reading disabilities, reading readiness programs, the teacher qualification procedure, the source and availability of materials in reading, the financing of reading education, and research thrusts in the field of reading. Each chapter then concludes with a summary and brief bibliography of important reference sources within that country. This unique study will be an essential reference tool for students and practitioners in-the fields of education and reading literacy, as well as a valuable addition to both public and academic libraries.
