Book Progression and Regression in Language

Download or read book Progression and Regression in Language written by Kenneth Hyltenstam and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1994, this crosslinguistic collection looks at changes and developments in language involving gain or loss in structural complexity or utility. The dynamics of these processes of progression and regression are examined at the societal and the individual level, and the two are compared. In the former, the focus is on the social and cultural forces that influence groups of speakers to create new languages or abandon old ones. In the latter, the acquisition and attrition of both first and second languages are considered. Questions raised include: Can parallel structural patterning be observed in whole languages and in the individual's version of a language? Is there parallelism between progression and regression? Can changes occurring in progression and regression be interpreted in a typological framework? These are addressed from sociological, neuropsychological, and linguistic perspectives.

Book Progress through Regression

Download or read book Progress through Regression written by Jeff E. Biddle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cobb-Douglas regression, a statistical technique developed to estimate what economists called a 'production function', was introduced in the late 1920s. For several years, only economist Paul Douglas and a few collaborators used the technique, while vigorously defending it against numerous critics. By the 1950s, however, several economists beyond Douglas's circle were using the technique, and by the 1970s, Douglas's regression, and more sophisticated procedures inspired by it, had become standard parts of the empirical economist's toolkit. This volume is the story of the Cobb-Douglas regression from its introduction to its acceptance as general-purpose research tool. The story intersects with the histories of several important empirical research programs in twentieth century economics, and vividly portrays the challenges of empirical economic research during that era. Fundamentally, this work represents a case study of how a controversial, innovative research tool comes to be widely accepted by a community of scholars.

Book Atlas of Atherosclerosis Progression and Regression

Download or read book Atlas of Atherosclerosis Progression and Regression written by Herbert C. Stary and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-06-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely revised and updated, the Second Edition of the Atlas of Atherosclerosis Progression and Regression contains new material and new illustrations from Dr. Stary's groundbreaking work in the field of atherosclerosis diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Over 100 photographs show arterial and lesion structure and individual components in unprecedented detail. These images allow you to compare and contrast healthy arteries with those developing and regressing lesions. They illustrate the successive steps in the natural history of human atherosclerotic disease from the microscopically visible, lipid-filled macrophages in susceptible locations of arteries to lesion forms that produce clinical symptoms. The book provides an up-to-date, pathology-based framework of morphologies of atherosclerotic vascular lesions that serves as a basis for correlation with morphologies determined by a variety of clinical imaging techniques. Demonstrating the evolution of arterial lesions form the clinically silent to the clinically relevant, An Atlas of Atherosclerosis Progression and Regression is a teaching aid and diagnostic tool for recognizing changes in lesion progression, stabilization, or regression. About the author: Dr. Stary is Professor of Pathology at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He came to New Orleans via the Departments of Pathology of the McGill (Montreal) and Yale (New Haven) Medical Schools. For 7 years, Dr. Stary also served as chairman of the American Heart Association's Committee on Vascular Lesions.

Book Progression and Regression

Download or read book Progression and Regression written by Sean T. Donovan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short stories, Progression and Regression, is an attempt to show the natural ebb and flow of our lives, and, most importantly, who was there to guide us through those times. For instance, in most of the stories, one of the characters is facing a change or a · crossroads and is comforted, supported, and loved by someone close to him. The intention in these stories is to identify and explore many possible relationships and their necessity to our emotional well-being. These relationships include a man and woman in love, a grandfather and a grandson, a priest and a parishioner, a father and a son, and a mortician and a small town. The diversity of these relationships is the strength of this collection of stories. For example, if this were a collection of short stories based solely on the relationship of a man and a woman, there would almost surely have been some repetition in the stories. But because several different character combinations are present, the propensity for repetition was lessened. Progression and Regression is an entertaining and exhilarating look at the relationships of people. Through life and death, misfortune and triumph, these characters continue to fight the battle. These characters continue to fight not because of wealth, power, or social acceptance, but because of the strength they acquire from the loved ones in their lives.

Book Regression of Atherosclerotic Lesions

Download or read book Regression of Atherosclerotic Lesions written by M. Rene Malinow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute on Regression of Atherosclerotic Lesions, sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was held in Maratea, Italy, September 11-13, 1983. The institute was designed to foster discussion of experimental data on the regression of atherosclerosis in animals and evidence of a similar phenomenon in humans. The participating scientists showed with anatomical and biochemical data, that atherosclerosis regresses in cholesterol fed animals after withdrawal of atherogenic stimuli. The existence of regression in humans was inferred from sequential angiographic visualization of arteries, but anatomical and biochemical characteristics of the process have not been defined. Two mechanisms are probably involved in such an angiographic regression. The first, which may occur when hyperlipidemia is partly or fully corrected or during undernutrition or other metabolic abnormalities, may be related to atherosclerosis changes noted in animals undergoing regression. The second type seems independent of changes in plasma lipid levels and may involve resolution of thrombi or other underlying arterial wall factors. The relative frequencies of the two mechanisms are unknown; whether they can occur simultaneously also warrants consideration. It is likely that an exciting milestone will be forthcoming when regression of atherosclerosis is unequivocally demonstrated in humans. Publication of these institute proceedings constitutes a valuable background for future developments.

Book Regression to Dependence

Download or read book Regression to Dependence written by Robert C. Van Sweden and published by Jason Aronson. This book was released on 1995 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliving early states is now widely recognized as a necessary component in psychotherapy with disturbed patients. Building on the pioneering work of Klein, Ferenczi, Balint, and particularly Winnicott, Dr. Robert Van Sweden shows how to foster the process of experiencing these early states in the analytic setting. With vivid clinical illustrations he demonstrates that regression to that time of early dependence allows the patient to reexperience the mother-infant relationship in the transference, and to reintegrate parts of the self split off during failures in the original dyadic interaction. Dr. Van Sweden, like the pioneers on whose work he builds, believes that in the safety of the analytic setting regression leads to further ego integration and to emotional development. Thus, regression to dependence is ultimately progressive. In this book Dr. Van Sweden thoroughly reviews theories of regression and then adds his own conceptualizations. He sees patients who are in need of a regression to dependence as most often those with preoedipal rather than oedipal conflicts. Therefore, technique must be altered in a way that involves metaphorically cradling the patient in reexperiencing the first few months of life. Since the patient then often experiences overwhelmingly primitive affects, the therapist must be willing to extend the standard therapeutic frame and be able to survive the patient's projected rage and pain if ego integration is to take place. This book is divided into four parts. Part One addresses the nature of regression to dependence and introduces the reader to Mrs. R., whose experiences in analysis illustrate the challenges and advantages of applying the theoretical concept of regression in the actual clinical setting. Part Two focuses on the risks and rewards of the regression to dependence, including a review of some analysts' theoretically and clinically based objections to this process. Part Three explores the interactions between analyst and patient that impede ego integration and those that facilitate it. Part Four presents the author's view of the important changes regression to dependence can offer patients and how this approach makes psychoanalysis useful to a wider scope of patients.
