Book The Synthesis of Randomly Alloyed Palladium silver Nanoparticles for the Catalytic Treatment of Aqueous Nitrite

Download or read book The Synthesis of Randomly Alloyed Palladium silver Nanoparticles for the Catalytic Treatment of Aqueous Nitrite written by Jacob Preston Troutman and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrate (NO3-), and its daughter compound nitrite (NO2-), are two of the most prevalent contaminants in drinking water. Catalytic degradation of NO3- and NO2- provides a treatment method with a small environmental footprint, though it is currently hindered by the need for a catalytic system that pairs reduced costs with enhanced activity and longevity. Monodisperse, randomly-alloyed palladium–silver nanoparticles (Pd [subscript X] Ag [subscript 100-X] NPs) with tunable compositions (X = 50–95) were studied for use as catalysts in aqueous NO2- reduction. The synthesized Pd [subscript X] Ag [subscript 100-X] NPs were supported on amorphous silica (SiO2) and studied for use as aqueous NO2- reduction catalysts in batch reactors with H2 gas as the electron donor. Nitrite reduction followed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics for ≥80% conversion, and displayed a high selectivity (>98%) for nitrogen gas (N2) as the end product. Nearly all compositions displayed increased activity over pure PdNPs supported on amorphous SiO2. Catalyst longevity was assessed for the most active catalyst. Throughout recycling, the catalytic activity decreased, although complementary analysis indicated no major physical changes of the catalyst. Overall, this work demonstrates that incorporating inexpensive, semi-noble metals into bimetallic alloys is a potential avenue for increasing catalytic activity while decreasing catalyst cost for NO2- reduction

Book Creation of New Metal Nanoparticles and Their Hydrogen Storage and Catalytic Properties

Download or read book Creation of New Metal Nanoparticles and Their Hydrogen Storage and Catalytic Properties written by Kohei Kusada and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports the discovery of metal nanoparticles having new structures that do not exist in bulk state and that exhibit hydrogen storage ability or CO oxidation activity. Research into the reaction of hydrogen with metals has attracted much attention because of potential applications as effective hydrogen storage materials, as permeable films, or as catalysts for hydrogenation. Also, CO oxidation catalysts have been extensively developed because of their importance to CO removal from car exhaust or fuel-cell systems. At the same time, atomic-level (solid solution) alloying has the advantage of being able to continuously control chemical and physical properties of elements by changing compositions and/or combinations of constituent elements. This thesis provides a novel strategy for the basis of inter-elemental fusion to create highly efficient functional materials for energy and material conversions.

Book Unsupported Thiolate capped Palladium Nanoparticles as Selective Hydrogenation Catalysts

Download or read book Unsupported Thiolate capped Palladium Nanoparticles as Selective Hydrogenation Catalysts written by Jie S. Zhu and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The reactions of palladium are invaluable to modern academic and industrial research, and nanotechnology is the foundation on which the next generation of materials is built upon. Unsupported thiolate-capped palladium nanoparticles were found to be highly substrate selective for alkene hydrogenation and isomerization. A modified Brust-Schiffrin reaction enabled the facile and convenient synthesis of a diverse set of ultra-small thiolate-capped nanoparticles. The physical properties of these nanoparticles were highly tunable due to the widespread availability of ligand precursors. Mechanistic evidence and insights reveal that steric and electronic effects from the ligand environment on the nanoparticle surface controlled reactivity by influencing alkene adsorption via [pi] bond coordination or di-[sigma] bond formation. Only alkenes close enough to the metal surface of the nanoparticles underwent reaction. Dienes with good overlapping p orbitals could overcome these steric effects on the deactivated palladium nanoparticle surfaces. A mechanistic model was built from these completed studies, and this model can be used to predict the selectivity of hydrogenation or isomerization in multiple classes of alkenes with varied substitution patterns. These palladium nanoparticles were also found to be capable of chemoselective alkene hydrogenation in the presence of functional groups that are known to be labile towards reduction by palladium.

Book Palladium and Nickel Catalyzed Transformations Forming Functionalized Heterocycles

Download or read book Palladium and Nickel Catalyzed Transformations Forming Functionalized Heterocycles written by Hyung Yoon and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents Pd- and Ni-catalyzed transformations generating functionalized heterocycles. Transition metal catalysis is at the forefront of synthetic organic chemistry since it offers new and powerful methods to forge carbon–carbon bonds in high atom- and step-economy. In Chapter 1, the author describes a Pd- and Ni-catalyzed cycloisomerization of aryl iodides to alkyl iodides, known as carboiodination. In the context of the Pd-catalyzed variant, the chapter explores the production of enantioenriched carboxamides through diastereoselective Pd-catalyzed carboiodination. It then discusses Ni-catalyzed reactions to generate oxindoles and an enantioselective variant employing a dual ligand system. Chapter 2 introduces readers to a Pd-catalyzed diastereoselective anion-capture cascade. It also examines diastereoselective Pd-catalyzed aryl cyanation to synthesize alkyl nitriles, a method that generates high yields of borylated chromans as a single diastereomer, and highlights its synthetic utility. Lastly, Chapter 3 presents a Pd-catalyzed domino process harnessing carbopalladation, C–H activation and π-system insertion (benzynes and alkynes) to generate spirocycles. It also describes the mechanistic studies performed on these reactions.

Book Characterization and Catalytic Applications of Silver Nanoparticles Supported on Hierarchically Porous SiO 2 and Co 3O 4 Monoliths

Download or read book Characterization and Catalytic Applications of Silver Nanoparticles Supported on Hierarchically Porous SiO 2 and Co 3O 4 Monoliths written by Yasemin Yildirim and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hierarchically porous materials are of great interest in such applications as catalysis, drug delivery, chromatography, and electrochemical sensor arrays due to properties such as high surface area, large void volume, and tunable surface chemistry. In this study, we give the detailed report of the synthesis of supported Ag nanoparticles by nanocasting on to hierarchically porous SiO2 (silica) and Co3O4 (cobalt oxide) monoliths, as well as the use of these materials as heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrogenation and oxidation reactions. In the preliminary work, we investigated the synthesis of Ag supported on hierarchically porous SiO2 and Co3O4 monoliths, and the catalytic activity of these monoliths for the hydrogenation of MB (methylene blue) and MO (methyl orange) dyes in the presence of NaBH4 (sodium borohydride). The SiO2 monoliths were synthesized using a sol-gel technique. The Co3O4 monoliths were prepared by nanocasting, using the SiO2 monoliths as a template. The loading of Ag nanoparticles on the SiO2 and Co3O4 monoliths was done by a solution infiltration method using aqueous AgNO3 (silver nitrate) solution followed by reduction with ethylene glycol and hydrazine hydrate. Such monoliths also were used as continuous flow monolithic microreactors for the catalytic activity and stability studies for the hydrogenation of EO (eosin-Y) dye in the presence of NaBH4. Finally, the use of these monoliths for the oxidation of cyclohexene was investigated including the effects of temperature, oxidant, catalyst loading, and substrate to oxidant ratio. All these studies are presented in different sections depending on the different synthesis, procedures, and catalytic activity occurring in each heterogeneous catalyst.
