Book Progress Toward Cleanup of Operable Unit 1 Groundwater at the US DOE Mound Ohio Site

Download or read book Progress Toward Cleanup of Operable Unit 1 Groundwater at the US DOE Mound Ohio Site written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operable Unit 1 (OU-1) soil and groundwater have been affected by volatile organic compounds (VOC) Present groundwater remedy is collection, treatment, and disposal (pump and treat [P & T]) Several combinations of technologies were used to address soil and groundwater contamination Monitored natural attenuation (MNA) is a viable alternative Majority of source term has been excavated VOC concentrations in groundwater have decreased Attenuation mechanisms have been observed in the subsurface at OU-1.

Book Groundwater Strategy for the Ou 1 Landfill Area Miamisburg Closure Project Ohio

Download or read book Groundwater Strategy for the Ou 1 Landfill Area Miamisburg Closure Project Ohio written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objective of the study was to assist the Miamisburg Closure Project in their efforts to develop and refine a comprehensive, technically sound strategy for remediation of groundwater contaminated with trichloroethylene and other volatile organic compounds in the vicinity of the landfill in Operable Unit 1. To provide the necessary flexibility to the site, regulators and stakeholders, the resulting evaluation considered a variety of approaches ranging from ''no further action'' to waste removal. The approaches also included continued soil vapor extraction, continued groundwater pump and treat, monitored natural attenuation, biostimulation, partitioning barriers, hydrologic modification, and others.

  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Groundwater and Soil Cleanup written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-11-21 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive, up-to-date review of technologies for cleaning up contaminants in groundwater and soil. It provides a special focus on three classes of contaminants that have proven very difficult to treat once released to the subsurface: metals, radionuclides, and dense nonaqueous-phase liquids such as chlorinated solvents. Groundwater and Soil Cleanup was commissioned by the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of its program to clean up contamination in the nuclear weapons production complex. In addition to a review of remediation technologies, the book describes new trends in regulation of contaminated sites and assesses DOE's program for developing new subsurface cleanup technologies.

Book Alternatives for Managing the Nation s Complex Contaminated Groundwater Sites

Download or read book Alternatives for Managing the Nation s Complex Contaminated Groundwater Sites written by National Research Council (U.S.) Committee on Future Options for Management in the Nation's Subsurface Remediation Effort and published by . This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the United States, thousands of hazardous waste sites are contaminated with chemicals that prevent the underlying groundwater from meeting drinking water standards. These include Superfund sites and other facilities that handle and dispose of hazardous waste, active and inactive dry cleaners, and leaking underground storage tanks; many are at federal facilities such as military installations. While many sites have been closed over the past 30 years through cleanup programs run by the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. EPA, and other state and federal agencies, the remaining caseload is much more difficult to address because the nature of the contamination and subsurface conditions make it difficult to achieve drinking water standards in the affected groundwater. Alternatives for Managing the Nation's Complex Contaminated Groundwater Sites estimates that at least 126,000 sites across the U.S. still have contaminated groundwater, and their closure is expected to cost at least $110 billion to $127 billion. About 10 percent of these sites are considered "complex," meaning restoration is unlikely to be achieved in the next 50 to 100 years due to technological limitations. At sites where contaminant concentrations have plateaued at levels above cleanup goals despite active efforts, the report recommends evaluating whether the sites should transition to long-term management, where risks would be monitored and harmful exposures prevented, but at reduced costs.

Book Work Plan for a Demonstration of Remediation by Natural Attenuation for Groundwater at OU 1

Download or read book Work Plan for a Demonstration of Remediation by Natural Attenuation for Groundwater at OU 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work plan, prepared by Parsons Engineering Science, Inc. (Parsons ES), formerly Engineering-Science, Inc. (ES), presents the scope of work required for the collection of data necessary to conduct a treatability study (TS) for remediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs) at a portion of Operable Unit 1 (OU1), including Landfill 3 (LF 3) and the petroleum, oils, and lubricants (POL) Tank Sludge Burial, collectively known as Landfill 04 (LF-04), located at Altus Air Force Base (AFB) in Altus, Oklahoma (the Base). Hydrogeologic and groundwater chemical data to be collected under this program can be used to evaluate various remedial options; however, this work plan is oriented toward the collection of hydrogeologic data to be used as input into groundwater flow and solute transport models to evaluate remediation by natural attenuation (RNA) with long-term monitoring for restoration of groundwater contaminated with CAHs.
