Book Global Social Policy

Download or read book Global Social Policy written by Bob Deacon and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1997-10-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible text looks at the impact of the globalization process on social policy. National social policy is increasingly determined by global economic competition and international organizations. Its substance is becoming more and more transnational and now has to be understood in terms of global social redistribution, social regulation, social provision and empowerment. Global Social Policy examines trends in global inequity and summarizes the diverse experiences of different welfare regimes across the world. The authors review the social policies of international organizations such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, UN Agencies and the European Union, and show them to be engaged in heated controversy regarding the future for welfare. They argue that this concealed global discourse needs to be brought into an accountable arena.

Book Statistical Sources for Social Research on Western Europe 1945 1995

Download or read book Statistical Sources for Social Research on Western Europe 1945 1995 written by Franz Rothenbacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this book is to give a picture of the complex material that has been published in the field of social and econornic statistics in Western Europe. Although there are many guides, bibliographies and reference books on special topics of this broad theme, a general overview has been missing. With this book I hope to fill this gap. The frame of reference is a scientific one: enabling and facilitating comparative social research on Western Europe. In some respect this book enlarges and updates the bibliography written by Peter Flora, "Quantitative Historical Sociology", pub lished in "Current Sociology" in 1975. In principle, this guide is an annotated bibli ography of the most important printed material in the field of official statistics. The legitimacy of such an approach lies in the fact that even today printed statistics are the most important form of dissemination of statistical results, although microcom puters, CD-ROMs and the Internet have changed this situation. In any case, a spe cial section on statistical databases is included for every country, describing the main databases of the statistical offices. Furthermore, the Internet address of each international or national statistical institute is provided in the introductory para graph. This enables the reader to get fast access to online databases and supple mentary online information on statistics via the Internet.

Book Quantifying the World

Download or read book Quantifying the World written by Michael Ward and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good data, Michael Ward argues, serve to enhance a perception about life as well as to deepen an understanding of reality. This history of the UN's role in fostering international statistics in the postwar period demonstrates how statistics have shaped our understanding of the world. Drawing on well over 40 years of experience working as a statistician and economist in more than two dozen countries around the world, Ward traces the evolution of statistical ideas and how they have responded to the needs of policy while unraveling the question of why certain data were considered important and why other data and concerns were not. The book explores the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of the UN's statistical work and how each dimension has provided opportunities for describing the well-being of the world community. Quantifying the World also reveals some of the missed opportunities for pursuing alternative models.

Book Environmental Technology and Biosphere Management

Download or read book Environmental Technology and Biosphere Management written by H. D. Kumar and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text aims to cover all aspects of global, regional and local environment and point the way for effective management of environmental issues in the light of available technologies, both old and new. Contrary to conventional economic wisdom, the author aruges that most of the value in the planetary economy does not come from extracting things out of nature - rather it comes from the normal functioning of healthy rivers, forests and fields. The book shows how this may be achieved by the application and use of appropriate technologies. It stresses the need for combining the ecological prudence of traditional technologies with contemporary bio-information, space and renewable energy technologies, so as to effectively and sustainably manage ecosystems, pests, forests, farms, wildlife, villages, cities, water bodies and other components of the planetary environment.
