Download or read book History of the Rise Progress and Termination of the American Revolution written by Mercy Otis Warren and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mercy Otis Warren has been described as perhaps the most formidable female intellectual in eighteenth-century America. This work (in the first new edition since 1805) is an exciting and comprehensive study of the events of the American Revolution, from the Stamp Act Crisis of 1765 through the ratification of the Constitution in 1788-1789. Steeped in the classical, republican tradition, Warren was a strong proponent of the American Revolution. She was also suspicious of the newly emerging commercial republic of the 1780s and hostile to the Constitution from an Anti-Federalist perspective, a position that gave her history some notoriety.

Book The Age of Progress eBook

Download or read book The Age of Progress eBook written by Tim McNeese and published by Lorenz Educational Press. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (1871—1929) The Age of Progress covers the latter decades of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th. Building on the advances of the industrial revolution, this "post-revolutionary" period is similarly defined by remarkable technological and industrial innovation. An era of firsts—steel bridges, sewing machines, bicycles, typewriters, radios, automobiles, airplanes, electric light bulbs, the telephone, photography, and the first motion picture—the Age of Progress gave birth to unprecedented modes of productivity, transportation, and communication. Thomas Alva Edison, Wilbur and Orville Wright, and Charles Darwin are among the historic figures discussed. Special emphasis is given to the sociology of industrial advancement—most notably the development of leisure. Challenging map exercises and provocative review questions encourage meaningful reflection and historical analysis. Tests and answer keys included.

Book excerpt: The idea of progress guided human expectations and actions for over two centuries. From the Enlightenment onwards, it was widely believed that the condition of humankind could be radically improved. History had embarked on an unstoppable forward trajectory, realizing the promise of freedom and reason. The scientific revolution, the industrial revolution, and the French Revolution, in some views also the socialist revolution, were milestones on this march of progress. But since the late twentieth century the idea of progress has largely disappeared from public debate. Sometimes it has been explicitly declared dead. The wide horizon of future possibilities has closed. The best we can hope for, some say, is to avoid regress. What happened to progress? Why did we stop believing in it, if indeed we did? This book offers answers to these questions. It reviews both the conceptual history of progress and the social and political experiences with progress over the past two centuries, and it comes to a surprising conclusion: The idea of progress was misconceived from its beginnings, and the failure of progress in practice was a result of this flawed conception. The experiences of the past half century, in turn, has allowed us to rethink progress in a more adequate way. Rather than the end of progress, they may herald the beginning of a new, reconstructed idea of progress.
