Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way to the Sabbath of Rest, or the Soul's Progress in the Work of the New-Birth It is true that many from mistaking the principle of God's being the root of all things, have endeavored to rec oncile light and darkness, good and evil, flesh and spirit, Christ and Be lial; and so to laugh all mortification and self-denial out of the church. But, alas! What have the notions and prae tices of such ended in, but shame and confusion of face? They have sowed to the wind, and reaped the whirlwind; grasped at an imaginary heaven and perfection, but like Lucifer, have fall en into hell and palpable darkness; having, like the foolish virgins, spent their oil, and received poison into their lamps, and thus made themselves un fit to meet the Bridegroom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Reform: A Sermon Delivered at Utica, on Sabbath Evening, February 16, 1834 I have not come here to-portray the evils of lewdness as they exist in our cities. Were it proper or practicable, I have not the vanity to believe it to be within the compass of my talent to do it. Nor is the genius of Milton, or the pencil Of Raphael competent to the task. It is a mystery of iniquity that must, to a great degree, remain hidden till the judgment, because it beggars description. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath: Scientific, Republican, and Christian But It Is remarkable that these public trans gressions Of the Fourth Commandment are not regarded, either by the Offenders, or by the com munity, as involving such condemnable immorality as the violation Of any Of the other command ments Of the moral law. A Christian employer may rob his servant Of his Sabbath rest fifty-two times a year without any reproach; but, if he rob bed him only once Of his Sabbath's wages, all the newspapers would pillory him as a scoundrel. An elder who Should repeatedly profane God's name, would certainly be disciplined; but he may com pel his servants to profane God's Sabbath habit ually without any loss Of church privileges, and almost without diminution Of Christian character. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath Made for Man: Or, the Origin, History, and Principles of the Lord's Day I. Though the Sabbath question is extremely intricate, and embraces a variety of subjects, at first sight, foreign to it, it is hoped that, in the following Essay, an arrange ment has been adopted that secures at once simplicity, perspicuity, and logical sequence. By fixing the attention upon the leading features of the controversy, it will be found, that the historical view of Genesis ii. 1 - 3, the casual notice of the institution in Exodus xvi., and the morality of the fourth commandment, ate the fundamental principles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scriptural Views of the Sabbath of God The work now presented to the reader is the fruit of long, and frequent, reflection and preaching upon the subject by the Author. It is not therefore hastily got up for the present necessity, when the sabbath is demanding in its defence all the efforts of those who know its value and love its blessedness but it is nevertheless, as the writer would persuade himself, peculiarly adapted to the urgency of the moment, as endeavouring to fortify this holy ordi nance from the armoury of God's Word, and to secure its principles and practice upon that which is, and must be, its. Book The Sabbath Viewed in the Light of Reason Revelation and History

Download or read book The Sabbath Viewed in the Light of Reason Revelation and History written by James Gilfillan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sabbath Viewed in the Light of Reason, Revelation, and History: With Sketches of Its Literature The author of the following work accounts it his happiness to have been connected from his earliest days with a class, of whom the sacred observance of the Lord's Day has been a prominent distinction. That there have been among them no insincere characters, presenting a distorted image of their creed, he will not affirm; but sure he is, that both ministers and private individuals, with whom, from his circumstances, he has been brought into intercourse, have been, for the most part, upright, holy, kindhearted, cheerful Christians, with whom, he had reason to believe, it would be good for him to live and die. Of persons in sacred office there rise to his view, Mr. Barlas, Crieff; Dr. Pringle and Mr. Black, Perth; Mr. Jameson, Methven; Dr. Mitchell, Anderston, afterwards of Glasgow; Dr. Terrier, Paisley; Dr. Jamieson, Edinburgh; Mr. Cidbertson, Leith; Mr. Beath, Pitcairn Green. He cannot name others who occupied a less public station. But he sees them attending to the claims of their fellow-creatures equally as to their own affairs - visiting the poor and the suffering - sitting by their bed-sides with the impression that a dying immortal is near, and with the tear and the tone of sympathy - tending the steps of the aged and the neglected - showing in their countenances the serenity and benevolence which they have catched from the face of the Saviour - their very steps indicating that they "Walk thoughtful on the silent, solemn shore Of that vast ocean we must sail so soon."
