Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of Science, in the Century To discuss in a single volume the progress of science in the nineteenth century has been no easy task, and the author craves the reader's indulgence. It must be remembered that the book does not pretend to be a history of nineteenth century science; it is designed simply as an introduction to many histories - some still unwritten. It is not a consecutive story of the marvellous progress of knowledge which the century witnessed; it is simply a record of some of the great scientific events. Many famous names and many important discoveries have been left unmentioned, for any attempt at exhaustiveness would have made a volume of this size a mere catalogue. On the other hand, there has been a serious attempt to discuss the great theme so as to give prominence to the salient steps of progress. To have attempted this in an easy-going mood would have been irreverent to the past and insulting to the serious reader; therefore no apology is offered for the difficulty of some of the pages, nor does it seem necessary to apologise for the numerous quotations from expert authorities,-they help to give personal reality to some of the pages, and they were needed as acknowledgments of the author's indebtedness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Progress in the Twentieth Century, 1906-1907, Vol. 1: A Quarterly Journal of Scientific Thought We may pass hurriedly over Commercial Law, merely remarking that the brief course, which is all there will be time for, should come towards the end of the period of study, and that it will not aim at anything so foolish as to make a man his own lawyer. So far we have remained on the circumference of the subject; we have not yet penetrated to the centre, which is the training of the judgment to deal with the actual problems of commercial life. We approach more closely to the essential purpose we have in mind when we come to the subject of Accounting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Progress in the Twentieth Century, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Journal of Scientific Work and Thought; No. 8, April 1908 Under ordinary conditions, in the absence of radioactive matter the time taken by the falling leaf to pass over the fixed portion of the scale is termed the natural leak of the electroscope. This natural leak is quite considerable, and the time may even amount to several hours. The presence inside the case of a comparatively weak radioactive substance reduces the leak to a few minutes, or even seconds. It is desirable to give some account of the reasons underlying this behaviour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Progress in the Twentieth Century, Vol. 5: A Quarterly Journal of Scientific Work and Thought; July 1910 to April 1911 The simpler name star map is here applied to the chart generally known as the Astrographic Chart, because this latter conveys a suggestion Of technicality which is absent from the project. What astronomers in different parts of the world are really about is the making of a large and much more detailed map Of the stars than has hitherto been produced. The map is being made by photography; but though the word astrographic has been coined for use when photo graphy is applied to the stars, the work does not involve much technicality that is not familiar to the users of an ordinary Kodak. In three details only does the work of the astronomer differ from that of the amateur photographer: he uses a much longer camera; he drives the camera by clockwork so that it may follow the stars; and he takes pictures at night instead of in the daytime. It may perhaps be added that he uses the light emitted by the stars, instead of photographing objects by the reflected light of the sun. But of these details more presently. Download or read book Science Progress in the Twentieth Century Vol 7 written by H. E. Armstrong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Progress in the Twentieth Century, Vol. 7: A Quarterly Journal of Scientific Work and Thought; July 1912 to April 1913 By the range of the tide at a place is meant the excess of the depth of water available at high-water for oating a ship at the place above the corresponding depth at low-water. Until recently measurements Of the range of the tide were made only at places close to the coasts. They are, in fact, among the results furnished by the use of a tide-gauge. It was supposed, chie y on theoretical grounds, that the range of the tide in the open sea was much smaller. For a complete understanding of the tides, it is desirable to ascertain the range in the Open ocean and in partially enclosed seas, such as the English Channel, by direct Observation. It appears that ordinary methods of sounding are not available for this purpose and new instruments have been specially devised, one by Captain Adolf Mensing Of the Imperial German Navy, the other by Admirals Mostyn Field and purey-cust. The preliminary results obtained by the use of the instrument due to the latter are very striking, a range of tide in the Channel amounting to no less than 24 ft. Having been measured at a place about midway between Beachy Head and Dieppe. Systematic Observations Of this kind may be expected to throw much light on the nature of tidal oscillations. The extent to which the tide wave in the Atlantic Ocean, for instance, is an oscillation generated in that ocean by the direct action of the Sun and Moon, as contrasted with a progressive wave, generated in the Pacific and Southern Oceans and entering the Atlantic betweeen the promontories of South Africa and South America, is in some degree a matter of controversy. The systematic study of the tides in the open ocean, as distinct from the ebb and ow along the coasts, may be expected to go far towards settling the question; the whole value of the method of cotidal lines, as developed by Airy and Whewell, depends upon the answer that may be obtained. Hunt put, for example, a prepared sheet under red, yellow, green, and blue glasses, and exposed the arrangement for a week to diffused light. The silver chloride became red under the red glass, dirty yellow under the yellow glass, a dark green under the green, and a light Olive under the blue. But with a sheet differently prepared he tells us he Obtained a very beautiful picture, in which the sky was crimson, stucco-fronted houses came out slaty blue, and the green fields Of a brick-red tint. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Progress in the Twentieth Century, Vol. 4: A Quarterly Journal of Scientific Work and Thought; July 1909 to April 1910 IT is clear that the comprehensive message offered to Oxford by her Chancellor, diplomatically indefinite though it be in most respects, is bound to lead to changes of importance - such a ball having been set rolling Will not be stopped until some of the existing asperities have been flattened out and the roads made more serviceable. The physician is so rarely prepared to heal himself that When he is seen to attempt an honest and thorough diagnosis of his ailments, any effort he may make to cure himself is bound to attract not only the sympathy but also the support of. Interested onlookers. On this occasion the onlookers are more than interested - those Who have any eyes at all for the situation are aware that our Empire is most deeply concerned in a proper solution being found of the many serious problems Which confront our two ancient Universities. The newer Universities alone cannot carry us to salvation: at present they are dependent, as all things educational in this country are more or less, on Oxford and Cambridge.
