Book excerpt: "The basic concept of personalized learning (PL)--instruction that is focused on meeting students' individual learning needs while incorporating their interests and preferences--has been a longstanding practice in U.S. K-12 education. Options for personalization have increased as personal computing devices have become increasingly affordable and available in schools and developers created software to support individual student learning. In recent years, it has become more common for schools to embrace schoolwide models of PL. We collected data from schools in the Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC)'s Breakthrough School Models program. Our study seeks to describe the practices and strategies these schools used to implement PL, understand some of the challenges and facilitators, and consider these alongside achievement findings to discern patterns that may be informative. Teachers and students reported higher levels of many aspects of personalization than their counterparts in a national sample. These included time for one-on-one tailored support for learning; using up-to-date information on student progress to personalize instruction and group students; students tracking their own progress; competency-based practices; and flexible use of staff, space, and time. However, some more-difficult-to-implement aspects did not appear to differ from practices in schools nationally, such as student discussions with teachers on progress and goals; keeping up-to-date documentation of student strengths, weaknesses, and goals; and student choice of topics and materials. We estimate study students gained about 3 percentile points in mathematics relative to a comparison group of similar students. In reading, there was a similar trend, though it was not statistically significant. Low-performing and high-performing students appeared to benefit"--Publisher's description.

Nonfinancial defined contribution (NDC) pension schemes originated in Italy and Sweden in the 1990s, were then adopted by Latvia, Norway, and Poland, envisaged but not implemented in various other countries, such as Egypt and Russia, and remain under discussion in many nations around the world, such as China and France. In its complete form, the approach also comprises budget-financed basic income provisions and mandated or voluntary funded provisions. Volume 1 of this book offers an assessment of countries that were early adopters before addressing key aspects of policy implementation and design review, including how best to combine basic income provisions with an NDC scheme, how to deal with heterogeneity in longevity, and how to adjust NDC scheme design and labor market policies to deliver on reform expectations. Volume 2 addresses a second set of issues, including the gender pension gap and what family policies can do about it within the NDC framework, labor market issues and administrative challenges of NDC schemes and how countries are coping, the role of communication in these pension schemes, the complexity of cross-border pension taxation, and much more. We chose Beja as the venue to host the conference, as it provided a good support infrastructure and Fernando had a good working relationship with several people at the Beja Polytechnic Institute. Shortly thereafter, Fernando came to know that he was ailing from a disease thatwastotakehislifeinMay2003. Aswithmanyotherprojectsinwhichhegot involved, Fernando clung to the organization of this conference with dedication and perseverance, even while knowing that he might not see the results of his work. EPIA 2003 is a tribute to his work. Taking up on the successful experience gained from EPIA 2001, we decided to structure EPIA 2003 as a set of?ve distinct workshops, roughly re?ecting the panorama of AI research in Portugal. Special thanks are due to the organizers of each workshop, for the quality and timeliness of the work they carried out. The conference was all the more interesting because of the eight invited p- sentations and tutorials, by Alexander Bockmayr, Amþ?lcar Cardoso, Dario F- reano, HaroldBoley, PedroDomingos, PieterAdriaans, VeronicaDahlandVitor Santos Costa.
