Book Research Priorities for Airborne Particulate Matter

Download or read book Research Priorities for Airborne Particulate Matter written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulatory standards are already on the books at the the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to address health risks posed by inhaling tiny particles from smoke, vehicle exhaust, and other sources. At the same time, Congress and EPA have initiated a multimillion dollar research effort to better understand the sources of these airborne particles, the levels of exposure to people, and the ways that these particles cause damage. To provide independent guidance to the EPA, Congress asked the National Research Council to study the relevant issues. The result is a series of four reports on the particulate-matter research program. The first two books offered a conceptual framework for a national research program, identified the 10 most critical research needs, and described the recommended timing and estimated costs of such research. This, the third volume, begins the task of assessing the progress made in implementing the research program. The National Research Council ultimately concludes that the ongoing program is appropriately addressing many of the key uncertainties. However, it also identifies a number of critical specific subjects that should be given greater attention. Research Priorities for Airborne Particulate Matter focuses on the most current and planned research projects with an eye toward the fourth and final report, which will contain an updated assessment.

Book Progress in Drug Research Fortschritte der Arzneimittelforschung Progr s des Recherches Pharmaceutiques

Download or read book Progress in Drug Research Fortschritte der Arzneimittelforschung Progr s des Recherches Pharmaceutiques written by Vijendra K. Singh and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 45 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains eight reviews and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the connection with the previous volumes. The articles in this volume deal with neuro peptides as native immune modulators, with Calmodulin and with effects of cell stimuli and drugs on cellular activation, with recent advances in benzodiazepine receptor binding studies, with the medicinal chemistry and therapeutic potentials of ligands of the histamine H3 receptor, with Serotonin uptake inhibitors, with computer-aided drug design, with natri uretic hormones and with the recent developments in the chemotherapy of osteoporosis. In the 36 years that PDR has existed, the Editor has enjoyed the valu able help and advice of many colleagues. Readers, the authors of the reviews and, last but not least, the reviewers have all contributed greatly to the success of this series. Although the comments received so far have generally been favorable, it is nevertheless necessary to analyze and to reassess the current position and the future direction of such a series of monographs. So far, it has been the Editor's intention to help disseminate information on the vast domain of drug research, and to provide the reader with a tool with which to keep abreast of the latest developments and trends. The reviews in PDR are useful to the nonspecialist, who can obtain an overview of a particular field of drug research in a relatively short time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As requested by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Interagency Committee for Extramural Mathematics Programs (ICEMAP), this report updates the 1984 Report known as the "David Report." Specifically, the charge directed the committee to (1) update that report, describing the infrastructure and support for U.S. mathematical sciences research; (2) assess trends and progress over the intervening five years against the recommendations of the 1984 Report; (3) briefly assess the field scientifically and identify significant opportunities for research, including cross-disciplinary collaboration; and (4) make appropriate recommendations designed to ensure that U.S. mathematical sciences research will meet national needs in coming years. Of the several components of the mathematical sciences community requiring action, its wellspring--university research departments--is the primary focus of this report. The progress and promise of research--described in the 1984 Report relative to theoretical development, new applications, and the refining and deepening of old applications--have if anything increased since 1984, making mathematics research ever more valuable to other sciences and technology. Although some progress has been made since 1984 in the support for mathematical sciences research, the goals set in the 1984 Report have not been achieved. Practically all of the increase in funding has gone into building the infractructure, which had deteriorated badly by 1984. While graduate and postdoctoral research, computer facilities, and new institutes have benefited from increased resources, some of these areas are still undersupported by the standards of other sciences. And in the area of research support for individual investigators, almost no progress has been made. A critical storage of qualified mathematical sciences researchers still looms, held at bay for the moment by a large influx of foreign researchers, an uncertain solution in the longer term. While government has responded substantially to the 1984 Report's recommendations, particularly in the support of infrastructure, the universities generally have not, so that the academic foundations of the mathematical sciences research enterprise are as shaky now as in 1984. The greatet progress has been made in the mathematics sciences community, whose members have shown a growing awareness of the problems confronting their discipline and increased interest in dealing with the problems, particularly in regard to communication with the public and government agencies and involvement in education. Book Progress in Drug Research Fortschritte der Arzneimittelforschung Progr s des recherches pharmaceutiques

Download or read book Progress in Drug Research Fortschritte der Arzneimittelforschung Progr s des recherches pharmaceutiques written by JUCKER and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's drug research is an extremely complex process which, apart from chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and preclinical trials, in cludes a variety of sciences such as biotechnology, biochemistry, im munology, physics, biology and even computer sciences. The Table of Contents of the present volume demonstrates this situation and makes it evident that the individual researcher cannot possibly hope to keep abreast of all aspects of modern drug research. In this re spect, the series of monographs "Progress in Drug Research" pro vides valuable help and assistance. Those who simply wish to remain informed of the latest trends and developments in drug research can use the 34 volumes so far available as a source of almost encyclo pedic character. Researchers actively engaged in the various scientific fields forming the entity of drug research can benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience of the respective authors, and they will be assisted in their endeavour to discover new pharmaceutical agents. Moreover, the extensive bibliographies of the individual reviews provide an invaluable overview of the literature most pertinent to today's drug research. I should like to thank all the authors for their willingness to prepare the reviews and for sharing their insights and experience with the readers. Thanks are also due to Mrs L. Koechlin, H.-P. Thiir and A. Gomm of Birkhauser Publishers for their valuable help in the pre paration of this volume.

Book Recent Progress in Hormone Research

Download or read book Recent Progress in Hormone Research written by James H. Clark and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Progress in Hormone Research, Volume 46 provides a superior summary of the developments in the field of hormone research. The book discusses the molecular basis of androgen insensitivity; the tissue-specific expression of the growth hormone gene and its control by growth hormone factor-1; and the molecular characterization of mammalian tachykinin receptors and a possible epithelial potassium channel. The text also describes the properties of the guanylate cyclase receptor family; insulin-like growth factor-binding proteins; and growth hormone receptor and binding protein. Mutations in the insulin receptor gene in genetic forms of insulin resistance; the characteristics of the cAMP response unit; and the role and secretion of inhibin in the rat are also considered. The book further tackles the structure of the lutropin/choriogonadotropin receptor and the gene for multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2a. Endocrinologists, physiologists, and biochemists will find the text invaluable.
