Book Progress in Asian Social Psychology

Download or read book Progress in Asian Social Psychology written by Kuo-Shu Yang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-03-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents ways of thinking dramatically different from mainstream psychology, which is seen by many as primarily a product of Western civilization. Asian social psychologists in this edited collection apply Asian perspectives to issues of major concern in their societies, including parental beliefs about shame and moral socialization in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States; achievement motivation in Taiwan and the United States; and the effects of school violence on the psychological adjustment of Korean adolescents. Other chapters examine the role of social psychologists in Confucian societies, and group dynamics in Japan. The authors believe psychological research using an indigenous approach will enable Asian as well as non-Asian psychologists to understand the cognitions and behaviors of Asian people more accurately. Scholars and students interested in Asian psychology, social, cultural and cross-cultural psychology will find this volume of interest.

Book Advances in Downy Mildew Research

Download or read book Advances in Downy Mildew Research written by P.T.N. Spencer-Phillips and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-06-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very significant advances have been made in downy mildew research since the last major text on these oomycete fungi and the diseases they cause was published in 1981. The emphasis in this new volume is on evolution and phylogeny, control with chemicals including those that manipulate host plant defences, mechanisms of resistance, virulence and the gene pool of wild relatives of crop plants. Additionally, definitive lists of binomials and authorities provide a key reference source. The book is relevant to anyone with an interest in these unique biotrophic pathogens, either in their own right as causes of damaging diseases or as model systems for research on host-pathogen interactions. It should be read by: students, teachers and researchers in academic and research institutes; research and development personnel in the agrochemical industries; agricultural and horticultural advisers, and other extension workers.

  • ISBN : 1108631606
  • Pages : 551 pages

Download or read book Phycology written by Robert Edward Lee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phycology is the study of algae, the primary photosynthetic organisms in freshwater and marine food chains. Since the publication of the first edition in 1981, this textbook has established itself as a classic resource on this subject. Aimed at upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in phycology, limnology and biological oceanography, this revised edition maintains the format of previous editions, whilst incorporating the recent developments in the field such as: the potential and challenges of producing algae biofuel; the proliferation of algal toxins; and the development of new molecular tools and technologies on ancestry, phylogeny, and taxonomy of algae.

Book Progress in Electrodermal Research

Download or read book Progress in Electrodermal Research written by Jean-Claude Roy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrodennal activity refers to electrical changes across the skin in areas of the body that are psychologically responsive. The eccrine sweat glands are the primary detenninant of electrodennal activity, and these are psychologically active especially on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. As a matter of convenience, electrodennal activity is most often recorded from the palms. Over the years, the electrodennal response has been known as the psychogalvanic reflex, the galvanic skin response, the skin resistance response, the skin conductance response, and the skin potential response. The tenns psychogalvanic reflex and galvanic skin response have fallen into disuse among scientists, but are still to be found in psychology text books. of its early discovery, ease of measurement, and often easily observable Because response to experimental manipulations, the recording of electrodennal activity is one of the most frequently used methods in psychophysiology. Indeed, in the early years following the founding of the Society for Psychophysiological Research, electrodennal research so dominated the field that people worried that the society was simply an electrodennal society. Although other psychophysiological techniques have emerged as equally strong contributors to psychophysiology, electrodennal research continues to be important throughout the world. As a result of this massive research investment, there has been great progress in understanding electrodennal phenomena, as well as major advances in recording methods since the phenomenon was discovered.

Book Biology and biochemistry of host pathogen interactions in marine brown algae

Download or read book Biology and biochemistry of host pathogen interactions in marine brown algae written by Frithjof Christian Küpper and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Associations of marine algae with symbiotic or parasitic microorganisms are ubiquitous phenomena known for a long time. However, there is an almost complete lack of knowledge on details of such interactions. The intention of this study is to use the potentials of modern biological and biochemical techniques in order to analyze the reaction of brown algal hosts to the attack by pathogens and epibionts. A 3-year field study at different localities on the European Atlantic coast revealed that Pylaiella littoralis populations were subject to massive epidemics of the parasites Eurychasma dicksonii, Chytridium polysiphoniae and Anisolpidium rosenvingei. Laboratory cultures were used to investigate the association of Eurychasma and Chytridium with brown algal hosts from different taxonomic groups: Eurychasma has a much broader host range than Chytridium, comprising members of all brown algal orders investigated, and it tolerates a wider range of temperatures than the latter. Phylogenetic studies based upon 18 S rRNA genes revealed that Eurychasma dicksonii belongs to the Oomycota, branching at an ancestral position between terrestrial plant pathogens and free-living members of the marine heterotrophic picoplankton. Chytridium polysiphoniae, a fungus, appears more closely related to the genera Rhizophydium and Spizellomyces (Chytridiomycota) than to other known Chytridium species. Chytridium produces chitin, whilst Eurychasma does not. Early stages of Eurychasma infection have a rather modest effect on host physiology. The photosynthetic capacity is enhanced, suggesting a temporary stimulation of host metabolism for hypertrophic growth. Chytridium, in contrast, has an immediate detrimental effect on host photosynthesis, which breaks down once a cell is infected, leading to the rapid death of infected cells.

Book Progress in Colour Studies

Download or read book Progress in Colour Studies written by Nicola Pitchford and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of colour attracts researchers from a wide range of disciplines from both the sciences and the arts. Along with its companion volume, Progress in Colour Studies 1: Language and Culture, this book offers a fascinating insight into current issues and research into colour. Most of the papers originated in a 2004 conference entitled ‘Progress in Colour Studies’ held in the University of Glasgow, U.K. Some additional invited papers are included from investigators exploring new and exciting avenues of colour research. The contributions to both books represent reviews of state-of-the-art colour research in various disciplines, and some new research findings are reported. This volume, principally psychological in content, focuses on the development of colour perception and colour language, from infancy into adulthood, across a diverse range of cultures, including English, Himba, Chinese, and Mexican, and on the intriguing yet perplexing condition of synaesthesia, thus bridging research from the physiology, psychology and anthropology of colour.
