The list of substances which need to be analyzed chemically is increasing. Plasma cell products, of course, have long been of great interest because the most prevalent ones are immunoglobulins. Other cell types, however, are the source of the broad spectrum of additional substances which classically fall into the sanctum of the molecular immunologist. It is these substances, and especially those more recently discovered, which are responsible for the broadening investigative interests of immunologists. In this volume we have provided you with descriptions of research being done with immunoglobulins and with complement. Additionally, we have in cluded two reports that deal with molecules which are among the more recent acquisitions of the molecular immunologist. The components of complement are known to react in a cascading manner which results in the lysis of cellular antigens. Book excerpt: Throughout the centuries, inflammation has been considered as a disease in itself. This misconception arose from the inability to distinguish between inflammatory changes and the insults which induce them. The understanding of the distinction between the genesis of inflammation and the tissue reactions that follow is attributed to JOHN HUNTER, who, at the end of the 18th century, substantially contributed to the analysis of inflammation in objective terms. Today, however, we are still trying to find explanations for Celsus' Signs in terms of structural and functional changes occurring in the inflamed tissue. There are drugs which modulate these signs but, without a detailed knowledge of the basic physiopathological events, it is impossible to understand their mechanism of action. Notwithstanding, the effects of anti inflammatory drugs provided new knowledge of the relevance of the signs and symptoms to the sequence of biochemical and morphological changes occurring in inflammation. When we accepted the invitation to edit a Handbook on Inflammation and Anti Inflammatory Drugs, we were aware of the magnitude of the task. We knew the impossibility of covering the whole field in detail, especially taking into account the rapid accumulation of experimental knowledge which would, in all likelihood, overtake the process of publication.

It is thus appropriate that each volume should have a relevant subtitle. In the present volume the underlying theme is immu nology and its application to the study of a number of different biochemical systems. Almost inevitably, the study of the cell-surface antigens and glycoproteins of a number of different tissues tends to dominate the contents, but considerable emphasis is also placed on subcellular organelles and enzymes. Undoubtedly, it is the impact of readily available monoclonal antibodies that dominates work in the field. The epitope specificity provided by monoclonal antibodies gives the biochemist a powerful lever with which to probe the location, structure, and function of cellular protein and glycoprotein antigens. A number of the chapters included in this volume have a strong biomedical emphasis. This is indeed intentional, as it is now the policy of the series to cover the more applied aspects ofthe subject, while in no way neglecting more fundamentaltopics in subcellular biochemistry.

Book excerpt: It has only been a short time since the existence of suppressor cells was demonstrated, yet in this period of time a great deal of information has been compiled concerning their basic science and their functions or disordered functions in human disease. This volume is an tempt to clarify the immune mechanisms through which these cells act, their normal functions, and how their functions are disordered in certain disease states. In this volume some rational approaches are proposed to therapy of diseases perceived at least partially due to disordered immune regulation. Particular focus is on the recently emerging field of soluble suppressor factors as a means of providing adoptive immunotherapy in certain situations. I hope that future work in this field will justify the confidence in this approach.
