Book Mexico and the Post 2015 Development Agenda

Download or read book Mexico and the Post 2015 Development Agenda written by Rebecka Villanueva Ulfgard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how and why Mexico’s approach to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) implementation with the López Obrador administration is unsustainable and non-transformative, overshadowed by his vision of Mexico’s “Fourth Transformation”. Approached as a super mantra revolving around “Republican Austerity” and “First, the poor”, it provides original analysis of structural and conjunctural challenges facing Mexico as regards People-, Planet-, and Peace-centered development. The book reveals the promise “First, the poor” is inconsistent with data on Mexico’s poverty reduction (SDG1). Despite record-high spending on social programs and unmatched coverage, the recent tendency of improvement in tackling poverty is rather ambiguous from the perspective of multidimensional poverty. The book covers access to clean energy (SDG7), resilient infrastructure and sustainable industrialization (SDG9), and safeguarding biodiversity (SDG15) by examining three megaproject case studies: the oil refinery Dos Bocas, the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Maya Train, generating concern with the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainable development. The prospects for an ‘enabling environment’ for SDG implementation are hampered by persistently high levels of homicides and impunity (SDG16). Turning Mexico’s Armed Forces into ‘first development partner of choice’ is problematized as regards their reach in infrastructure megaprojects and social welfare programs, in the overall context of the ‘de-risking state’ favoring private capital. The result, as determined by Villanueva Ulfgard, has led Mexico further astray from sustainable and transformative development.

Book Poverty and Social Developments in Peru 1994 1997

Download or read book Poverty and Social Developments in Peru 1994 1997 written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where, when, and how much to invest in wastewater treatment is a policy decision that presents many challenges and is not properly addressed in most situations worldwide. The most common situations are, unfortunately, those in which no treatment is provided at all... The integration of wastewater management and pollution control interventions and policies within the broader water resources management policy are essential for achieving the efficient use of the scarce resource available. With that in mind, this paper has three objectives: * Emphasize the need for systematic evaluation of wastewater management actions and investments as part of any water resources management initiative. * Define the conceptual framework that should guide the analysis process. * Identify and explore techniques appropriate to this analysis. The ultimate purpose of the paper is to provide a general approach to developing and implementing wastewater management interventions. Its scope is determined by two main considerations: (i) the need to incorporate the general principles that determine water resources management policies into the design and selection of wastewater management and pollution control interventions; and (ii) the need to address water quality problems at the appropriate geographical scale.

Book Descentralizacion para Satisfacer Necesidades Basicas

Download or read book Descentralizacion para Satisfacer Necesidades Basicas written by J. Michael McGuire and published by IAP. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 25% of Latin Americans live on less than $2 a day, and Latin America is the most unequal region of the world. Poverty and inequality cause suffering and slow development. The solution must include generating an inclusive development process through satisfying the basic needs of the poor that enhance their productivity, that enable them to contribute to the development process, and that enables them to earn the income necessary to live a full life. Decentralization of taxing and spending from the central government to lower levels of government can help to satisfy basic needs of the poor and create an inclusive development process. However, decentralization is a stepby-step process that must implemented by taking into account real-world circumstances such as a lack of administrative ability in local government, and by formulating policy accordingly. The book derives economic principles for implementing the process of decentralization, and it presents cases that illustrate the principles at work. It is an economic guide for policymakers and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Latin America's leading sociologists, Manuel Antonio Garreton explores contemporary challenges to democratization in Latin America in this work originally published in Spanish in 1995. He pays particular attention to the example of Chile, analyzing the country's return to democracy and its hopes for continued prosperity following the 1973 coup that overthrew democratically elected president Salvador Allende. Garreton contends that the period of democratic crisis and authoritarian rule that characterized much of Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s was symptomatic of a larger breakdown in the way society and government worked. A new era emerged in Chile at the end of the twentieth century, Garreton argues--an era that partakes of the great changes afoot in the larger world. This edition updates Garreton's analysis of developments in Chile, considering the administration of current president Ricardo Lagos. The author concludes with an exploration of future prospects for democracy in Latin America.

Download or read book Fundamentos de los sistemas de implementaci n de protecci n social written by Kathy Lindert and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
